It depends almost entirely on the gate you're going through. You can swap gear at every rest stop and town, and you can check the gate map in your menu, so plan accordingly.

It might be a bit of a newbish thing to do, but since I haven't gone past T2 yet, I usually stick with straight normal damage - I'd rather stick with a consistent amount of damage than risk a pathetic gray number.
