What are some of the uses for the Backfire Barrier? I like the way the Drakon looks after applying it, but it seems to suck as a skill. Any tips on how to use it effectively?

Like jogging. If you use it while jogging, you'll burn calories faster.

If you've used a DBB, old shards, or nitro...
...It's very similar. I pop it and then dance in the middle of a mob, constantly hitting them and catching them on fire

The speedboost is there for maybe 2-3 seconds I think, but it's surprisingly noticeable. Useful to get out of dangerous situations such as when bombing or something I guess.
If you want to do what Randomzz said, Scorching barrier gives you 4 orbiting orbs and higher offensive power.

Actually, Scorching Barrier only gives 3 orbs. The damage output is still very good though.

Backfire Barrier is far superior to Scorching Barrier purely for its utility. You can use it to dash around a wall of enemies to get to the healers behind them, outrun Greavers, massively boost your speed while charging a bomb, etc. etc.
The ability to reposition yourself almost instantaneously is invaluable. I find extra damage on the barrier to be less useful because you can't really use it in the fights that matter.
Just use the speed boost to run faster. Or to position yourself to keep the orbs on target.
Or anything that requires you moving faster.
