The Core is.... a giant nuclear reactor?

The Core, It's very strange and mysterious. What causes it power? Who built it? Why is it there? Well, I noticed something when looking at the core and the clockworks... a strange blue glow. While most people associate lime green glows with radiation. Radioactive particles smash with other particles and may form a light blue glow in the air. There are two types of radiation that cause this. Cerenkov Radiation, and Spectral Radiation. Cerenkov radiation is seen when beta particles go through something dense, such as water. Well why would we be seeing this? the Core isn't in any water! It could be that Cradle's atmosphere is much more dense than what would be on Earth. The more likely thing would cause the blue glow is a phenomenon known as Spectral Emissions, which forms a blue glow in the air around highly radioactive objects. Spectral emissions are caused by ionization of oxygen and nitrogen in the air, similar to the effect of the Aurora Borealis which is formed in a similar way. This could form easily, even if Cradle's atmosphere is similar to a habitable planet planet such as Earth, which would make it easier for all the life that lives on cradle to breath without help from respirators (Which makes sense due to wolvers and other natural creatures that were brought here from wherever by whoever built cradle can seemly breath fine). Another idea to support that The Core is a Nuclear reactor is the steam that is seem everywhere and released in higher levels. This steam could be heated up water that is being exchanged for cooler water to cool the core. There are many obvious holes in my theory, but it's a start.

This was the only picture I can find on the wiki with a good look at the core. Feel free to post your own screenshots. (Blue glows in freeze levels don't count)

Open a window, look at the sun. A giant, natural, nuclear reactor.
It doesn't need water (nor a cooling system) and it emits light.

Spectral emissions? Cerenkov radiation? Don't over analyze it.
It's a blue star with gravity dampeners and heat absorbers built around it. Sci-fi style/videogame logic.

We all know the core it's a sort of reactor (it emits energy, duh). The question would be how it came into existance.

I doubt the core is a star.

I doubt the core is a star. For even if you COULD contain it, the radiation would be a million times worse than what I'm describing and anything that comes within a few thousand miles of it would die from obscene radiation poisoning almost instantly. It could be a reactor, Nick DID say there were lots of hidden secrets in the game along with OOO playing a massive amount of attention to tiny obscure details. Also, it appears The Core has moving parts, it doesn't appear to just be covered by a heat shield.

I think the core is a cage for something very powerful myself.

That and it seems like it's been getting either closer or larger since when I first reached it, but that might just be an illusion...

It is not

Nuclear stuffs do not exist on Cradle. At worst, it's 100000000000000000000000000000000 BABs compressed into a small ball, which will probably result in a black hole.

It is 5 blast cubes. Comparing that with a bajillion BABs, 100 trojans, Vog Cubs, and Vog himself, that is a large difference.

The Core is a living Entity of some sort.

The Echo Stones make it fairly clear. Seriously, do you people even pay attention to the story anymore?

It wouldn't be the first game with a sentient nuclear thing. Go google Okuu.

lol, that'd be an epic crossover. A snipe that ate the sun?

@ Edwward

I'm willing to bet a lot of people haven't gotten any echo stones yet, but I had the theory that the core is a caged thing or something based on one of the official arts of the planet. Something about it just screams "alive" (well also some of the words used by various npcs I kind of hints at something as well)

In my opinion, its some kind

In my opinion, its some kind of deity inside a huge metal protection that passed through different worlds taking chunks off of them with some kind of gravity power (like the one it used to pull the skylark). the chunks were then incorporated to the planets structure by either gremlins (since weve seen them repairing skydomes) or by the deity itself (possible worlds- planet where almire came from, some modern devil-run planet where only the administrative section was sucked in, a beastly planet and some place possibly still nearby, since lichens still arrive on meteors, where slimes have a monarchy)till it developed some kind of virus (swarm) and was forced into hiding in the core.
Or it was trapped in the core by pissed off gremlins from gremlinland god knows how.
idk.

Story time, everyone.

From what I've managed to put together, the Clockworks were constructed to protect a powerful, benevolent entity that resides within the Core. This is the same entity that saved the Alpha Squad in their descent into Cradle, and granted players access to the Sanctuary.

Some long years ago, this creature made a pact with the Gremlin King Tinkinzar (the so-called "Architect") to save itself from a dark cosmic forces. In return for allowing the Gremlins to use its body as an unlimited source of Energy for their machinery, the entity was given sanction and hidden away at the center of Cradle. The planet itself was to be devised as a mechanical labyrinth to repel any force that might enter, while entire worlds were drawn in from the stars to shield the entity.

Tinkinzar went mad, turned the Clockworks into a death trap and caged the creature. The darkness then found its way into the lower levels of the planet and manifested itself as the Swarm we know and fear today.

Oh...and then the Knights showed up. That's pretty much all we know; everything else is up for grabs.

Everything you said is correct, especially if the publicly available source code (which is just teeming with spoilers) and models viewable with spiral spy (also teeming with spoilers) are anything to go by.

Yes, I do pay attention to the story. Probably more than most people. I didn't know the echo stones talked about the core as I haven't had any reason to try and reach the Sancuary, yet.

Have you wondered where radioactive gas gets pumped into? Where the coolant systems are installed, and where the excess heat is vented to? And where surcharge of electricity are redirected to? Living in a self-automated power plan(e)t, logical lore is logical.

If this is a star, there would be very little radiation. People should really educate themselves more about nuclear energy before commenting on it.

Start here: http://www.diffen.com/difference/Nuclear_Fission_vs_Nuclear_Fusion

Also, Edwward at least was accurate in post 18 (I say was because I'm not sure how much SK lore OOO is going to change now that they screwed all the energy info up). Go to the shadow layers, read the lore stones there. Only comment on his post I would make is that it wasn't protection against whatever might come, it was specifically protection against the swarm while this being "sleeps". Which leads you to wonder when will it wake up - and what will it do?

"If this is a star, there would be very little radiation. People should really educate themselves more about nuclear energy before commenting on it."

Depends on what you consider radiation or 'very little'. UV rays or just the light itself is a type of radiation.
And considering how bright it is today here, the sun is surely emiting lots of radiation!

Educate yourself here:

I think it was pretty obvious

I think it was pretty obvious from the context of that conversation that they were talking about nuclear radiation, not radiation as a broad term.

That said depending on the star, gamma and x ray radiation is also created which can be pretty nasty to have to deal with. But it is true, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a star without protection from the UV either, I've gotten more than my fair share of uv burns just from welding and they certainly aren't pleasant (and it only take about 5-10 seconds of exposure to burn you pretty good, arc eye is also pretty unfun to deal with)

I don't believe it is a star though, because then we'd have the huge gravity to contend with as well.

As far as OOO lore being "messsed up", that's an easy one to explain and stay with the lore depending on how they do it, the core opened up, whatever energy contained within it comes out more easily thus taking away the need for our armor suits to absorb mist energy from the air. Or core has a powerful energy signature inside of it, who's to say the core itself isn't also consuming a huge amount of energy just to keep whatever is inside of it inside of it? Once it's open all that energy could in theory be freed up. (what I mean is maybe there is little energy near the core because it is literally sucking it all up before the knights can use it)

wrong, wrong... the core doesn't contain some special deity. it binds the unholy CEO of FiendCorp; who's rage at the rapidly decreasing profits, by way of the ever lazy devilites, sets the atmosphere itself within the core on fire. this hellfire is what illuminates the core.
