For veteran players,
For veteran players, clockworks is too easy and too predictable. Lockdown offers a challenge and an opportunity to hone your skills as a player relative to others. It's also conveniently structured as a competition so players are easily engaged and motivated. Although most people complain about trolls and whatnot, chatting during battle actually helps Lockdown because social interaction (for good or for worse) makes games more entertaining and addicting.
I personally play Lockdown because there's no rehab for Spiral Knights and it beats going through clockworks all day.

Shiny pink rocks.
Because of the recipes (TRIGLAV, my beautiful baby Triglav), and also because Enamorocks mean money. Not to mention listening to the chat or actually managing to hulksmash an opponent with a Triglav/Grinto charge is fun. Or watching the occasional opponent get knocked into fire blocks with the help of a really loud explosion.

no idea, RLD is so boring. just a bunch of kids that spam polaris (without skill, only contri has spam skill) and charge their voltedges.
GvG on the other hand is fun (especially EoS and jemp teams that dont spam)

To try out weapons I will never use in PVE
Seriously. I never use BTB or gran faust outside of LD. My DVS has never seen the fake lighting of clockworks, nor has my Winmillion cut a wolver. My polaris has never trolled a PVE team to death, and my ash of agni has never set alight a room full of oilers. LD is purely a testing ground for things I can never really find a use for.
