I installed a fresh Windows 8.1 on my laptop and installed Java and SK on it. When i play, i can't play in fullscreen
because the screen freezes and sometimes tears. There is no freeze or tearing when i play windowed mode, but
if i change to fullscreen, the screen freezes and sometimes tears, while the rest (ingame activity/music) is still working:
that means that i can still perform actions and hear everything in game, but i just can't see what i'm doing because my screen is stuck.

Does someone know an answer for this?

this case...

mind if i ask what your pc component?
click start > in search write dxdiag > open it and post operating system-processor-memory-graphic card (graphic card in display page), mostly this problem caused by graphic card not supported for full screen and if you steam user try disable steam overlay.

This is what believe to be the most important information.
If you need more information, then i'll give that as well.
And also, I'm not a Steam user.

graphic card

it seem you using integrated card' because most of intel card are not designed to play game~ but they are very good at showing desktop image and office stuff. maybe you should try check at number 5 here http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/48
if you planning to change your card... i tell you something~
AMD/Radeon card : from my research.. this card have the highest perfomance (depend on version) and cheaper than nvidia, but have lot of issue and consume lot of wattage.
Nvidia : this card have balance wattage consume and high perfomance, but... check your wallet first o_o

It happens on macs too, not just windows

This god awful bug happens to me as well. Instead of it lagging in fullscreen, it only lags in windowed. It also frame tears even with Vsync enabled. It started with the apocrea patches and never happened for the years I've played sk before the bad patch. I don't feel the game is worth my money if every other patch breaks things.

Btw I'm on an nvidia 320m chipset for a MacBook Pro 7,1 revision. This means it's not a gpu specific bug

@Petater' you experience another problem... look at Egalitus post, s/he already have most updated pc component except gpu and s/he never experienced lag in windowed. Egalitus laptop can play almost lot of game which needed processor and ram power without lag' but will laggy alot when play game which need gpu power like Crysis and other high graphic game~ and did you know about integrated card? this card built to motherboard or default card when you buy pc, laptop or mac (not all using same card but mostly intel family and pentium), but why Egalitus can play without lag? look at shared memory Egalitus posted, that shared memory is memory taken from ram to buffed intel integrated card 8044mb - 1632mb = 6421mb left (still high and can make your game run faster) + it processor use 4 core (if i'm not wrong from version) and have high clock rate boost.

first before you start posting' check different between gaming card and intel card, btw it seem you using old nvidia version... try update your driver here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us maybe this will fix your problem~ or maybe not. make backup before try this

i will tell something here because i don't like people who blamed this game update make their game become more worst~
i see very small difference before battlesprite update and after battlesprite update or maybe no difference...
if some of you become very lag after some update or you retired 2 year ago and back again but only feel laggy this year, all you have to blame is your pc component and your connection to sk server... not spiral knight! just think your pc as pet, if you take good care of it.. your pet will have good health and more energic, but if you never give him food or clean it.. guess what? you know what i mean right~

so what your pc need? lot of ways to take care or treat your pc like a boss
uninnstal unused program, rearrange data block on your hard disk or defragment it, clean error registry, protect your pc with antivirus, update your windows (control panel > system and security > windows update), check disk for error (right click your hard disk > properties > tool), not using overclock, and etc. pc component is same like us.. have lifespan~ more longer they stay... more lower they power like when we become old.
example : 3 year ago you can play this game with high frame rate~ but play it again now only give you medium frame rate or maybe low~
because pc component not having same power like old day.
