Framerate Drops and Teleporting? Try Linux!

Ok, so I have always had a problem with massive framerate drops, freezes, and rubber banding when playing SK on minimum graphics and transients culled, and just assumed it was the fault of my poor little laptop. I created an alt account because I got bored and installed SK on linux instead of windows, and to my delight I found that everything was smooth! I can run the game on max graphics with 16x antialiasing with render effects on all while being run fullscreen on a 1920x1080p HD external display...and everything runs swimmingly! I havn't had one rubber banding incident, my framerate is at 60FPS, the graphics are GORGEOUS, and there is no delay between my keystrokes and my character's actions. So, the problem wasn't my laptop, it was windows! Sadly for all the steam users out there (my main account included), linux is not an option, however, if you make an alt or use the downloadable/browser client, then I would HIGHLY suggest setting aside a small partition of your hard drive to install linux on so you can have both linux and windows through dual booting. Best part is, Linux is FREE!

tl;dr-Linux runs SK better than windows any day

PC specs:
Manufacturer: Sony
Model: Vaio VPCEH11-FX
OS: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS 64-bit and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
RAM: 4GB
Processer: Intel Pentium CPU B940 2.00GHz Dual Core
Graphics Card: Intel Integrated Graphics

yeah...these specs are far from phenomenal

Yup. Not surprised.

Linux does a lot of things better than windows.
One of the major things that windows has over linux is... market share.

Additionally - if you know your ways around linux, you can backdoor getting SK to run in steam. The easiest method is using wine to install window's version of steam on linux.

gods ain't gonna help you, son.

1 gremlin chatter now, because I see where this is going.
2 it's not only SK, linux is way better in stability in general.

Usually teleporting, rubber banding, and keystroke delays are caused by bad or slow internet connection.

I had a problem on my old windows install (actually really new) that caused internet speeds to be slower, and load times in games to be slower. When I re-installed windows, the game ran super smooth, and loading took only a few seconds (3 seconds to load Haven :D).

So, the problem COULD be partially because of a bad install of windows, or just a bad internet connection. Also, as you said, the specs aren't phenomenal, but definitely enough to play SK on max graphics.

EDIT: Linux is better if you know it well, but if you want to play your main on windows, this might help.

@Skepticraven
Tried using SK on steam through wine and had all kinds of problems with it, even after making my own build of wine I still had about a .5 to .8 second delay between keystrokes and actions, which makes it unplayable.

@Spiralviperr
I've actually had to reinstall windows 3 times and had SK on all those installations, as well as playing SK on other laptops with similar specs that yielded the same poor performance, so that factor can be eliminated. Also, I'm using the same internet connection as I always have so that isn't the issue (and it isnt my wireless card, I've tried an ethernet cable).

The nature of this thread was not supposed to be primarily a discussion about linux, but more of a PSA to those who are frustrated with "lag" and want to know a possible way to stop it. Since discussion is focused on playing Spiral Knights in Linux rather than Windows, and not just an OS debate, I think this thread still belongs in general discussion because it is still focused on the game, whereas gremlin chatter is for "things of a non-Spiral bent"

I've had all kinds of problems with Ubuntu's unity desktop. When I switched to mint's gnome variant, everything got back to normal. Never liked ubuntu's OS after the switch to unity, but still like its package manager.

It is likely that this lag on windows was likely caused by background processes - such as steam (the overlay seems to cause problems on some systems) and not as developed support for opengl. Windows loves directx. Linux loves opengl. Therefore linux by default should support SK better on average than windows since it is an opengl based game.

i will bring light here~

changing windows to linux is not a solution~
linux might have more customizable than windows 7... but windows 7 have lot of compatibility with lot of software.
first i will tell you why magnum can run easily when using linux
from pc spec Magnum-Frost post upper there we can just calculate it, let see
Manufacturer: Sony
Model: Vaio VPCEH11-FX
OS: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS 64-bit and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
RAM: 4GB
Processer: Intel Pentium CPU B940 2.00GHz Dual Core
Graphics Card: Intel Integrated Graphics

what make magnum can play more better on linux than windows 7 is windows 7 premium 64-bit need requirement at least :
ram : 2gb - 2,5gb processor : 1 GHz and 20gb empty hard drive space (lower than that can make you run like slug)
while Ubuntu 12.04.4 only need :
no desktop : 256mb + 1gb hard drive space
with desktop : 512mb + 5gb hard drive space

and if magnum used windows 7-64 bit as main os, magnum ram 4gb - 2gb = 2gb and this is not included ram stolen from intel integrated card. for those who used intel integrated card... click start > write dxdiag on search > see in display shared memory (ram used to power up intel card so it can support you on gaming or etc~ make magnum can run on max setting) so 2gb - ??? (integrated card shared memory).
so you guys know what make it run smoother on linux than on windows 7
but OS isn't the main problem when it come to your bad connection (for those who are far from us like me -,-)
case closed~
