If you are using a laptop with Optimus Technology (Intel CPU + nVidia GPU) then I've made a step-by-step guide just for you how to use the dedicated videocard on your laptop, as by default, the game will be using the integrated Intel videocard which is often very lacking in performance. I'm using the steam installation so if you are using the normal version you will have to assign the 'java.exe' file in the default Java folder (Program Files x86/x64).
Keep in mind that this method will increase your laptop's power consumption and heat output so I'd suggest to keep your temps in mind if you use an older laptop (with possibly a dusty cooler due to age). You can easily revert this if you don't necessarily need the performance gain and the shorter battery life, for if you want to be more mobile.
