Yeah, that would be quite interesing. We can name our Battle Sprites, why not gear?
That would be very cool in my opinon. Knights in medieval did that often.

Mine suggestion for that system:

Kozma would sell weapon name change passes for 50-300 energy (around that, more would be bad). It can be used for naming weapons, armors and costumes.
It would be shown in equipment, inspect and weapon wheel. Name of named weapon would be italic, in inspect and under name, there would be visible original name in smaller font.

-Items could be traded with keeped name
-Items' name must be resetable for free
-Naming does not bind item
-There could be free bound weapon name change pass in one of missions

As this game is 7 years old and still active I would say that adopting some if it's ideas concerning certain things such as this would be highly beneficial to SK.

now if only we had weapon plaques in the guild hall that let us hang up a model of our weapon with its name underneath...

TF2, Dota 2, CSGO - They all have name tags and are buyable only for real money (for around one 1€), but still, it's very profitable for devs, so it would be for Spiral Knights. People like to invent epic and funny names for their weapons and Spiral Knights community is pretty creative, so I think, that idea would be accepted warmly.

All the games you reference are made by one company. Valve.

Due to the fact that it is organized unlike most game companies don't expect the SK forum masters to have much power over new items. In Valve there is a flat organizational structure which means that anyone can work on any project which means that someone who has been paying attention to the forums for a few weeks may be asked to join a group that will design new items for the game.

Another thing to point out is that most games made by Valve are aimed at a more mature audience. The last thing I want to see when I inspect some ones loadout is to find it is full of items given rather vulgar and offensive names. Creating a program to recognize and censor such things might take some time as well.

If you wish to make a stronger argument try referencing games made by various companies that are aimed at various audiences.

Making censore isn't hard. Making complaing option for that too. Sprites does not have censor system (I think). Didn't seen even one offensive. I don't think that anyone would pay ce to curse some.

Changing name and description may cause huge madness especialy when new players won't know how item is actualy called and where/how to find it or start searching for. Btw if that option will be given to SK I am sure it will be VERY expensive... Why would anyone even waste money on things like that?

Its an optional thing, just like cosmetic armour, but still the cosmetic armour can go up to 500k cr.
changing the name would only change the inspect tooltip, I don't know many new knights who would go through the bother of inspecting someone hovering over the blade then seeing "Wolf Smiter Mk.V" and not seeing the itallics that say "Wild hunting blade" instead of just saying "yo dawg what blade be that?"

I don't know many people who would loose their minds over a name either, usual censors would apply making @~!"? over the name
also you can name your sprite and I only know one guy who refers to his sprite by what he named it

It'd be best if only bound weapons/shields could be renamed.(I find armor renaming quite ridiculous, no warrior ever named his armor!)
