It's more common than that even.
For one, your shield grows (some do, anyways) when you activate it. Although, who knows, that could be intentional so you don't have an oversized shield at your side while running. Plus, this Isn't a gear exclusive bug either. It is also notably seen in the spawning of some entities. For example, I've had a Vanaduke-sized Snarbolax burrow into the ground in front of me before.
this happens to all weapons, and not just in LD. they also may appear very small.
