The Dragon Princess had been deeply troubled by the secret that the Stranger Quince had revealed to her. Apparently there was a lot more magic in this world than the knights were aware of. A lot of their so-called technology was in fact based upon magical sources within the planet.
In addition to the magical power latent within the world, there were magical beings within the Core. In fact, the “monsters” in the Unknown Passage were not truly monsters as knights knew them. Rather they were merely the magical creatures manifesting themselves in shadowy versions of monsters.
The secret Quince had revealed to the Dragon Princess hinted at a plot by these magical creatures locked within the Core, a plan that would allow them to manifest as knights, or, in a worst case scenario, actually take possession of knight’s bodies!
The Dragon Princess shuddered at the thought of her body being used as a host for some kind of alien magical demon.
Although dragons were to some extent magical creatures themselves, magic was not something the Dragon Princess had a lot of knowledge of. Her enchanted Lionheart blade was her only magical weapon. Or was it? She began to wonder just how much of their gear and trinkets may in fact be magical.
She decided to contact the Arcane Enchantress at whose side she had fought in a mission to the Core to rescue the Alpha Squad.
She composed and sent this message:
Dear Arcane Enchantress,
I hope you are well and prospering. I was very impressed by your knowledge, skill and valor on our mission to the Core. I would greatly appreciate your counsel in regards to magical powers at work on and within our world. Please come see me at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely Yours,
Mawashimono
The Enchantress arrived the next evening at the lair of the Dragon Princess in Lionheart guild hall.
“Mawashimono!” exclaimed the Enchantress. “It’s so good to see you again.” The Enchantress gave Mawashimono a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Oh my, sweetheart, where ever did you misplace your tail?”
“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you another time,” smiled the Dragon Princess grimly. “It’s good to see you again, too.”
“Let’s see that famous enchanted blade of yours,” said the Enchantress.
The Dragon Princess smiled shyly and unsheathed her sword. It shone with a pulsating golden light.
The Enchantress gazed at it with her eyes half-closed, enraptured by its power and beauty. “Glorious,” she said. “Gets me hot just looking at it…”
“Yes, well,” the Dragon Princess cleared her throat. “I’ve, um, come into some information concerning some of the magical elements on our world.”
“Oh?” asked the Enchantress with one eyebrow raised. “Do tell.”
“It seems there are magical creatures, demons if you will, who reside in the Core but seek to take over the surface of this planet as well,” explained the Dragon Princess. “I was wondering if you knew anything about these creatures.”
“Ah,” said the Enchantress. “Yes, I noticed these demons while on our mission into the Core. They did not interfere with us and I did not have time to investigate them further neither at that time nor since then.”
“Well, they may be planning harm against us. We need to take steps to defend ourselves against an attack,” said the Dragon Princess.
“Actually, I’ve been working on developing a trinket that would absorb and nullify magical attacks, as well as one that directs a magical attack back on the attacker,” said the Enchantress.
“Wonderful,” said the Dragon Princess. “Please continue to do so as quickly as possible. In the meantime, I’ll see what else I can find out about the demons in the Core.”

The Dragon Princess decided it was time to re-assemble the Special Investigators. They would need to investigate the magical elements of the game, particularly the Unknown Passage and the Swarm as well as the defensive capabilities of the magic line of gear. How these might tie in with the curse elements of the game might also be worth a closer look. She was probably missing some areas, which is why she needed a team even more.
But who would have the courage, knowledge, and skills to join the Special Investigators?
The Dragon Princess knew if this mission had any hope of succeeding she would need to form a team of legendary Special Investigators, and no one fit this description better than Penumbra Greyionne, the former head knightess of Nowensgrad.
Penumbra wielded a sword similar to that of the Dragon Princess, a long yet thin leviathan blade (designed for female combatant) with her name and her former title 'knightess of Nowensgrad' carved on the frame of the sword. The sword was old but it was kept in good shape by Penumbra, a relic that packed with nostalgia. If Mawashimono recalled rightly, Penumbra also has a charred photo of her lost son in her possession, an item that relieves her of her dying heart (she suffered numerous stroke) and gives her the courage to live on.
The Dragon Princess many years ago back on their home world. She recalled seeing her in dueling demonstration with her modified sword flashing around, patiently and vibrantly, her defenses impenetrable until her opponent left any small opening which Penumbra would seize to take control of the fight.
The Dragon Princess went to her abode. She saw her practicing in her yard and decided to test Penumbra’s swordsmanship. She hid behind a bush and observed her.
Penumbra was now in her 60s. Her long grey hair covered her pale wrinkled face. She had survived both the first and second Isoran civil wars as well as the Morai war. Consequently, her body was stained by war both physically and mentally. The Dragon Princess has heard that a scar could still be seen on her belly and that she could no longer bare children, a scar left by someone she knew, someone she loved.
The Dragon Princess watched the armored Penumbra in her standard Azure Guardian set with a grey colored cape instead of the usual red, the light blue platings are tarnished by the forgotten battles. Her Aegis shield had a large chunk of the body missing due to old engagements. Strangely, the damage actually lightened up the shield and made it easier for the old knightess.
The Dragon Princess was having doubts. She knew Penumbra prefered solo missions, but despite being an old lady, Penumbra was still unmatched with her modified leviathan blade. The Dragon Princess watched as the blade flew around her as if she was still a vibrant, younger lady that the Dragon Princess had observed so many years ago.
The Dragon Princess charged out from behind the bush while unsheathing her Lionheart Honor Blade. Penumbra responded without missing a beat. Their swords rang out again and again as they clashed. The Dragon Princess was impressed with Penumbra’s speed and strength. She was clearly staying in good shape. The Dragon Princess could find no way to get past Penumbra’s defenses, just as she expected. She lept back and broke off the fight.
“Greetings, Knightess,” said the Dragon Princess using her old title.
“Greeings, Princess. You honor me with that title and your visit,” replied Penumbra.
“Nay. The honor is mine. I see you’ve lost none of your sword skills,” chuckled the Dragon Princess.
“Oh, a few aren’t quite what they used to be, I suppose,” said Penumbra with a grim smile. “What brings you to my humble abode, Princess?”
“I am in need of someone with your unique wisdom and skills set,” explained the Dragon Princess. “A magical threat has been revealed, one that comes from the very core of the planet and the Swarm which hales from within it. Their tainted magical influence has most likely spread into every region we inhabit and much of the gear we make use of.”
“Hmmm, yes,” said Penumbra thoughtfully, “I wondered when we’d have to deal with this.”
“So you knew something of this threat already?” asked the Dragon Princess.
“Indeed. Youngsters such as yourself may not be aware of the forgotten land of Necropolis. There is a man, if you could call him that, who oversaw the creation of the Cradle, and would perhaps know the weakness of the Swarm, if there be any.”
The Dragon Princess gasped at this revelation. Penumbra’s shoulders sagged briefly as if weighted down by years of strong emotion. Then she raised her head high and declared, “I shall journey there to seek out this man and what aid he may be able to give us.”
“He sounds extremely powerful,” said the Dragon Princess. “What if he refuses to cooperate?”
Penumbra’s eyes narrowed and seemed to glow with a power from within. The Dragon Princess involuntarily leaned back.
“Leave that to me,” growled Penumbra.
“Still, it might be wise to take a team of some kind with you,” offered the Dragon Princess.
Penumbra gazed up into the sky thoughtfully. “A team would only get in my way, but there is a young man with potential whom I might take along.”
“Very well, then, Penumbra. Welcome to the Special Investigators. Send me reports when you can, and good luck on your mission,” said the Dragon Princess.
