Not a technical issue in-game but on the site itself. Every 5 or so minutes I seem to end up getting an 408: Request Time-out every <5 minutes on the site.

This doesn't occur on any other site but Spiralknights.com

wasn't sure if it's just me of if anyone else is having the same problem. I've just started experiencing this the last three days.

Same here, but more frequent. Even trying to send this post gave 2 errors.

I used to get it every once in a while before but now it's a lot more frequent and I have to wait a bit until I can load pages. Before, it'd just go away right after refreshing.

Hmm...

Well, have you guys only tried one way to get on the forums? Right now my Dell 2012 laptop is pretty much unable to get on forums without a minute or two of the pop-up error, yet my Nook, which I'm using right now, is pretty fine without the errors. Maybe it only effects certain devices?

Btw, I'm pretty sure the reason with the error is due to updating the wiki and such with the new weapons/costumes/aura/mission updates that had recently came out: I've done the new/updated missions cept for doing a Vana run to see what's at the end. :P

Seems as though Google Chrome is the cause of this. A lot of things on this site are become incompatible with Chrome. :(

I'm on chrome and everything is working just fine. It may be some browsing settings that is causing fishy things to happen. There's too many to go through, but it may be of interest to check them. There is an interested setting "Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors" which I currently have checked.

The only thing for me that sometimes doesnt function is the preview of posts (where some div tags are missing).

I've had this issue both on chrome and Firefox. I haven't had any timeout issues with other websites, only this one. The servers ingame have also been somewhat unstable for me recently - perhaps Three Rings are messing around and it's causing issues?

as long as it comes out positive I'm ok with that :D

Cheers to anyone who can solve this, I haven't got a clue!

I've had the issue with Chrome, to the point it was impossible to access.

Surprisingly, it works perfectly on... gulp... Internet Explorer, and I haven't had a single error yet while using IE.

Just takes awhile to load...

@Dibsville

Greatest understatement of world 2014.

It's strange, in one state using Chrome, I get this 408. In another, also using Chrome, I don't.

I thought I was the only one, so I googled "Error 408 Spiral Knights Forums" and get this from a week ago. Mine had the error around 15 times just to log in and get here. I also found that it worked on Internet Explorer, but...I can't use Explorer.

3 things.

1. IE is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (from a technical standpoint). They did fundamentally have a flaw in it previously (which caused bad things on the internet), but that has since been removed.
2. I believe it may be either some random add-on that is interrupting communication or related to the "extra features" in advanced settings.
3. Sometimes chrome doesn't talk well with other programs. Perhaps it is settings on a virus protection software that seems to not talk well with chrome?

I am using chrome and do not have a problem. That being said, I have almost no add-ons and no active virus protection software (I have other layers such as heavily monitored port filtering and script blocking. I do not suggest doing this unless you are aware of the vulnerabilities and are willing to take the risk.). The only thing I have as an extension of chrome is a script blocker that is set up rather specifically for my uses.

Chrome: Incognito?!

Having the same issue here using Google Chrome, though I don't recall having it a month ago, when I was last active.
Strangely enough, if I use Incognito Mode (Ctrl-shift-N or Command-shift-N), I can browse the forums just fine.

Only Chrome replies with a 408 error. IE, for me, doesn't even bother to respond, it just fails to load or load "indefinitely", like it's still trying to get the address.

All in all, here's the main problem

1. Chrome responds with a 408 Error
2. For Chrome/IE, server sends partial html file, or empty html file --> white screen/partial content that does not continue to load

At most, it does happen to all the browsers, just that IE and Firefox doesn't have an error checker.

I'm not exactly sure what's the problem, I assume it to be a problem with the HTTP and Drupal itself.

I think it has to do with new posts or such; when I went to browse through old threads, I didn't get any 408, but I did as soon as I opened up the new threads.

I have only been playing a few days but I have been getting this constantly. Here, on the wiki and logging in. I had to google it to even find this thread, I could not search here without the error.

On a whim I paused my Ad Block.

It SEEMS to have done the trick.

Just posting this in case it helps anyone else.

Sorry, since this site doesn't have any ads, nor does the 408 have anything to do with adblock, it still happens. It's a server issue, faulty looping I suppose.

Not that it matters, but I turned off AdBlocker for this site and I no longer get 408's... so if anyone is having this problem and they have AdBlocker, consider turning it off (it's not like it's useful here anyway, there's no ads).

Ahh, so it seems. It looks to be off-and-on, I can have it working perfectly fine but if I open a new tab and come to the site I can't use it whatsoever without getting a 408, while the other tab works fine.

At the very least, I can now access the site, as opposed to always getting a 408 no matter what.

Hrm.

2. I believe it may be either some random add-on that is interrupting communication or related to the "extra features" in advanced settings.

What other plugins does everyone use? I do not use an adblocker, but do use a script blocker (which is heavily custom set up for me and blocks ads indirectly).

Don't most adblockers have a whitelist function as well? Try whitelisting "forums.spiralknights.com" on a bunch of the plugins.

@Zaffy

Just because the site does not have ads does not mean adblockers wont affect it. It means it was designed not to affect it. Some of them poll other servers to check scripts before saying that it is an ad or not. This functionality could be the adblocker's server generating the issue (possibly for less common site/script forms because it usually probably has hashed/tabulated responses for common forms).

That being said, it probably isnt the problem (its a stretch, but not something that should be completely ignored).

HTTP Headers? Must be aliens

The server misresponds to specific headers sent by chrome, so yeah... Someone needs to check the modules used on sk's server.

Edit: server might be glitching because of chrome's page prefetch feature.

This is actually caused by the Drupal forum engine and not Spiral Knights. I figured out that there is a way to fix it but I doubt OOO will do it since I don't think they have a site manager anymore.

Another fix is by downloading the 64bit version of Chrome.

Are you sure it's Drupal that's causing this? I've had this issue on the entire site before I went over the 64-bits edition of chrome; even on subdomains like the wiki.

Posting the content from my topic over to this topic :v
A little while ago, Google has released a beta of their 64bit-version of Chrome for Windows 7 and 8.
Ever since I've been using this version, I haven't gotten any 408 error on this site!

This version is beta, but it's pretty much stable. Chrome Canary is a lot more bleeding-edge.
Plus it's always nice to get in touch with the latest features, eh?

I hereby rename this thread the "Who uses google chrome" thread

Galcies, that's what I meant when I said modules on sk's server, code modules that is. The reason it's an issue with chrome is that chrome "prefetches" pages before you click a link often, and that might confuse some servers not set up right. Get your page prefetch feature disabled in google chrome for it to stop 408'ing. Or... use a newer version of chrome with this fixed. It's the reason those trying a newer version earlier in this thread aren't experiencing it.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=377581

"It's possible these errors are being surfaced to users more often
than previously due to https://codereview.chromium.org/169643006,
for servers that very aggressively time out never-used sockets."

GMs close this thread with a "update google chrome" message. Y'all might need to use chrome beta depending on how long ago it was patched, /shrug
