Organizing an art competition

Hey guys;

Just though I would let you know I am planning a fairly large (20,000 CE in prizes) competition.
I want to get it started by this weekend so people can get started on working on stuff for it and maybe get a good stream of entries happening.

But I need a little bit of help getting it started up, mainly just need to know a few good things and get some opinions on if they would like the structure of it.
Things like that.

First thing:

I need to find a place that will allow me to upload the entries, kind of like a gallery.
Not DeviantART or anything like that.
Just a simple place where people can view the pictures, no accounts needed to do stuff and I can organize it blah blah blah.

There are a few places I had in mind but I thought some of you might know a good place for it.
It's mainly just to keep all the entries in one place, since I will be going through the entries personally on this godawful machine and uploading them to the Gallery, so that people don't have to wade through a bunch of posts to see new art I haven't linked to in the OP.
And there may be added functionality for polls or ratings, something like that, which may be useful.

Second thing:

My reward structure is going to be a little different.

Three Major Prizes of 5,000 CE each.
This is just for excellent artwork that I think deserves the 5,000 CE.
It's just a CE prize, no trophy.
This prize can be exchanged for sex at your nearest Shoebox.

Then 5 Minor Prizes of 1,000 CE each.
These are going to be categorized, I haven't thought of all the categories (maybe you can suggest some) but I have a few ideas.
Funniest Picture: Quality is irrelevant, just as long as the content is funny. Does need to be mostly drawing and not poorly drawn MS pain text.
Best Crossover: Cool Spiral Knights art crossed over with other franchises. As long as it has an actual identifiable character from Spiral Knights. Because I imagine 50 billion people seeing this category and drawing their knights as My Little Ponies. I won't upload that. Ever. You will owe me 1000 CE for having to look at it.
Coolest Action Shot: Matrix style freezes mid combat of Knights fighting. Ridiculously cool stuff, that looks like it cost billions of dollars to choreograph.

You get the idea.

Anyway I just want any feedback on this, if it's too limiting or whatever.
If I should change the way the prizes work.
I wanted to be as fair as possible to people of all artistic levels and I didn't want people who got into the Major Prize category to feel like one was better than the other. I think winning a Major something should feel like you've won a Major something.
As for minor prizes, feel free to suggest categories. I may make them open for public voting or something if the site they are uploaded on has that function.

Third thing:

Rules.

Yeah it has rules.
Mainly just to keep the stuff structured.
This is a Spiral Knights competition, obviously, so the ToS will apply to certain stuff. Can't have leetle cheeldrens looking at naughty things.
It has to have easily identifiable links to Spiral Knights in it. You can really make whatever you want, but it has to look like it has something from Spiral Knights in it. I'm not that fussy, other than that.
It has to be art made specifically for this competition, it can't be something you've put together before and want to submit again.
For it to count, I have to upload it to the gallery. If I don't see it and put it in the Gallery you can't win anything.
If you win a Major Prize, you won't be eligible to win a Minor Prize. You can't win more than one category of Minor Prize either. If there's a chance you win more than one Minor Prize category somehow, you'll be asked to choose one category and the next person will win the category you didn't choose.

S'pose that's it for rules.
If you can think of any other rules that should apply, feel free to tell me.
Pretty sure no penis is implied, but if I have to put it there, I will.

Also, the artwork can be in any medium. Pencil and paper, photoshop, origami, duct-tape sculpture, burnt toast that looks like Kozma.
Whatever you want, really.

Fourth thing:

Length.

Just want people to throw around an acceptable time period for a competition like this.
I was thinking 2 weeks to a Month, but it depends on how many entries people send in.
Hopefully people will share it since I am putting a fair bit of CE into it.
But we'll see.

Won't open this up to submissions yet 'til everything else is organized.
I'll make a proper thread for the competition when I start it up.
So, get posting, I guess.

Innnteresting.

You could make a Tumblr account for it, maybe? Dunno what kind of options they have for organising things, but I know you can upload pictures.

As for duration, I'd say a month or so, to give people time to (a) hear about the competition and (b) draw something.

Any queries or questions

Any queries or questions about the competition not suitable for this thread can be sent to this e-mail: spiral-shoebox@hotmail.com
It's a disposable e-mail I just made 30 seconds ago!

I want a better e-mail than that for accepting submissions.
Hotmail is just bad.

I won't be accepting anything like judging applications or whatever.
Mainly because by becoming a judge it would mean forfeiting any chance at prizes.
Although if any devs are interested in judging then they can.
Since they wouldn't win a prize even if they entered.
Nerds.

Also, one month seems pretty reasonable, if I start it on this friday/saturday then that gives people four weekends to work on their entries.
Which is a pretty long time to procrastinate 'til the last minute.

Are you allowed to simply

Make an SK Wiki Page of SK Competition Artwork? But I guess this is something that can be discussed in the Wiki section.

just so you know...

You're definately gonna get millions of My Little Pony pictures now.
such as this one: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z132/shyguyking/SpiralKnightRainbowDa...
I didn't draw that one, but it has an actual identifiable character from Spiral Knights.

I drew these two pictures in Paint before this contest, and before I even started Spiral Knights, but the first one still somewhat fits with the theme.

I'm in. Probably.

Ooh, this sounds fun! Now I just have to think of something to draw...
Quick question: is the "Coolest Action Shot" category for choreographed screenshots or awesome, action-packed drawings?

Well, that's not really a problem. In art contests people usually do not vandalize entries (not to mention that previous versions of the images are preserved in the logs, so there is actually no way to do it). In Puzzle Pirates we have been used to upload our entries on the wiki and it always worked just fine.
Anyway, great idea. I'm looking forward to enter the contest!

It's an art competition.
I would've thought it was implied that it had to be, well, art.

In Puzzle Pirates we have been used to upload our entries on the wiki and it always worked just fine.

Somebody else would have to set that up for me, I have no idea how to make fancy pages like that.

I think this will be easiest

I think this will be easiest to host on the wiki (everywhere else sucks), but I have a few questions concerning how it should be ordered.

Would it be better to have the entries in their own category, or as a subcategory of fan art?

And for the sake of OCD editors, what should the category be called to make it the most relevant to it's purpose?

Deadline

I need order fabrics to render a Sir Snarblebottom plushie (http://www.threepanelsoul.com/images/rants/20110602_sirsnarbs.jpg) for fun. Don't know when your deadline will, Shoebox, but will take a few weeks for me to get the fabrics and another week or 2 to actually stitch it together and add red flashing LED eyes. If I can't find the mats, I'll make origami!

So it's a little unclear, has the time to work on something already started, or are you still just thinking of doing this, and the logistics involved?

It really would be easier to require participants to host art in their own way and provide it to you to stick the link in OP. That's generally how all other forum run compos are run. Sometimes the runner will then save the entries from that point and host it on their own website.

If you do have artwork

If you do have artwork (however unlikely that may be) to submit for this, then just upload it to the wiki with this in the description:

{{fanart|your username}}
[[Category:Shoebox's Art Contest Entries]]

(Not sure if that will work but it should, I will test it shortly)

The idea is that people can use that to submit entries and they will appear here so nobody has to link to anything except that category.

Kinda busy with my own projects at the moment (course stuff), so I don't have the time to make a proper thread for the contest right now.

Also, no recycling art.
It has to be new art to be eligible for this competition.
Just thought I would remind people.

It really would be easier to require participants to host art in their own way and provide it to you to stick the link in OP.

That is essentially what I want to avoid.
I don't want people having to go through millions of irrelevant posts to find links to art I haven't placed in the OP yet.

I'm not sure either, but I believe the category tag should be included in the template (fanart, in your example).
I also think you should choose another name for your template such as shoeboxartcontest, so not to mess with future fan art entries not related to the contest (wiki editors and administrators might want to use fanart for general fan art).

Ok, I'll give it a go myself.

This will be no contest

This will be no contest competition without a Bomberman crossover. Or ponies.

Also, a Spiral Knight riding a Chaos Bringer (Phantasy Star Online) would be really cool. Or Dora the Centaur (Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder). I really want to see this game have a little more corelation with SEGA.

I just finished a SK work moments ago (before knowlege of this competition.) Plus, it's not original because I used the Spiral Knight wallpaper 'Spiral Knight' as a basis of my work.

Yes, you are supposed to

Yes, you are supposed to upload it to the wiki.

Log in, click on Upload file from the toolbox menu on the left, Choose your file from your PC and a Destination filename (I suggest using a Fanart- prefix as in Fanart-Your_title.png although it is not mandatory), then add in the Summary the following tag: {{Shoeboxartcontest|Username}}, where Username is obviously your username, but I guess you may want to use your IGN if it's different from your user, otherwise you'll have to post here or send a message on Shoebox's talk page to certify which your IGN is in order to claim the prize.

Shoebox, it would be neat now to have official rules and a deadline.

Thanks Balian for working that out.

I'm writing up the official thread now, I'll start the month from this weekend so people who started preparing for stuff now will have an extra week to work on their entries.

You guys will have plenty of time to finish your art, so don't rush!

Just wanted to let you and the entrants know that we'll be hanging up the winners here in the office as well as using them as examples for an official art competition later on.

Well I suppose I can add that to the official thread.
Hopefully enough people enter this competition to make it worth it!
Kinda wish I could enter my own competition now, though.
