I'm going to be going through the wiki fixing links that connect to the Costumes (Unique Forms) page. Now that costumes seem to have stabilized, I noticed that this page is entirely unnecessary (most unique forms of costumes have their own pages, and variations of forms are mentioned on the main Costumes page) and could be a source of confusion for future editors. But a ton of stuff links to it cause I am a derp.

-If you want to help: look at the "what links here" on the delete tag. Go to those pages and fix links to link to the Costumes (Group) page, or other places you feel are appropriate.

Heh

Actually this isn't taking too long, it just seemed like a lot was linked up via the "associated links." Anyway, noticed some clutter on the Recolored costume pages, cleaning that up too. There will be a bunch of micro edits for the first few as I cross-reference all of the formats on their pages, then it should go smoothly.

Note: sometimes I am linking to the bulk group, other times I am linking to a smaller group within the bulk group - I link to the smaller group if they all have a preceding similar name, like "dangerous." Other stuff is given an arbitrary group name, because they happened to be released at the same time, and as I fixed with the furniture "doodad" term (fixed to be direct links instead of doodad), I don't like linking through slang/unofficial terms. Let's just hope there's not some horrible linking issues in the future, like if they come out with Ancient Dangerous items in the distant days of years passing...or something. That's a bit of an overlap group for users, but it's pretty distinct for editors...but as far as relatability? Nightmare.

I like spoon's edit on the tailed helm page - I've added this to other pages, but it could potentially get very cluttered/messy as more items are added. I tried to solve this problem by having multiple forms in the same row on the main page, but horizontal expansion is not good on the wiki (nor is vertical but we can't avoid that) - and it only covered costumes, not gear. I suppose someone looking for costumes is interested in all aesthetically-related items, regardless of what type of arsenal item they are... heh.

Thoughts? Suggestions? I would do a category page of "forms and slightly altered forms of both gear and costume items" (named better of course), but that's not as user-friendly - unless it is linked to properly.

Regarding this issue, I'll be leaving the rest of the "see also" costume sections alone - for now I just did the Tailed Helm, Sallet, Pith costume helms and the Culet, Cuirass, Brigandine, and Draped Armor costume armors).

More on Spoon's Edits

Spoon's Edits: I like the idea. We can do something very nice with this:

I've come accross some fashion issues for users. Sure, we can make a costume page for costumes - but hey, gear with combat statistics looks pretty good too! What if I were a tailed helm enthusiast, and I wanted every tailed helm in the game? How would I know about the emberbreak helm if all I had to go off of were costumes? there's no similarity other than appearances...spoon's edit is nice in the "see also" section, but that could get very cluttered very quickly. Linking to various pages on the gear page itself also seems tedious and messy.

I tried to deal with this before, with an "alternate forms" column in the main Costume page table, but it was too difficult to keep consistent. And it didn't cover combat gear, like the Emberbreak helm.

so I an idea of what we could do:

2) a page: Items: Form Similarities. this page would just link directly to various Item pages, in the same alphabetical style as the category page. But more importantly, individual pages would use #linking to the various ToC sections on this page - like I've done with, say, the Warrior helm. A "see also" link on that page goes to a costume group page for Weather costumes ("weather" is a term used unofficially, chosen based on text in admin forum posts). Annoying to maintain, but easier to understand in general.

So, the Spiral Tailed Helm, and emberbreak, Oni helm costume, all of these would link to this "form" page via a link like so: Form Page#Tailed Helm. Yay! I'd probably have it be tidy and consistent, so the link would read [[blahblah|Items with similar appearances]]

Anyone like/want to help out? Or boooooo?

To start off: What should the page be named? Bear in mind: we can also do this sort of thing for accessories, like "dread wings" are just reskinned/reanimated dragon wings. So the name should be very "loose" or "general" and involve "form" or "shape." I really prefer "form" as I've used form all over the wiki for a long time now, and the term covers more than shape. But idc either way.

Page Title Thoughts

"List of Similar Appearances"

How does that sound? "list of sets" and "list of missions" is named similar. Since the page will be heavily linked to from many pages, the search-intuitiveness of the title of the page itself doesn't have to be ideal.

"List of Items that Share Similar Appearances" - too long, IMO

"List of Item Groups that Share Similar Appearances" - too long, IMO, potentially confusing - unofficial vs. official "groups" (compare "weather" with "battle chef" on the costumes (groups) page).

Any other suggestions?

Potential Table

I've set up a table on My Sandbox Page that I think will work. (check history/recent changes to force it to show up if you can't see it).

Example:

From the "spiral tailed helm" page in the "See Also" section, we could link like so:

[[List of Items by Similar Shape#Tailed Helm Shaped|Other "Tailed Helm" Shaped Items]].

Any suggestions?

shape naming: base it on either the lowest-star gear (Spiral, usually) or the first appearance of the form - or recolor. "Fur Cap Shaped" seems better than "Wolver Cap Shaped", since there's more "furry" things than "wolver" things when it comes to that narrow, slanted face...well, not currently in-game...but I like more general terms. This could be flexible, but tedious to change once implemented.
