How to release new weapons and sell them for high amounts of money without coming across scummily

Step One: Make a new weapon AND a reskin

This is the same amount of work needed to create a weapon and a reskin of that weapon later, but w/ more returns.

Step Two: Announce that the reskin is a reskin of a weapon that WILL come out later, and sell it a ways ahead of time.

The announcement builds hype for the new weapon that will come out and allows for an additional release later.
It also swings the development in a positive direction.

The special weapon will then serve as a beta period of sorts.

Step Three: Release the "normal" variant.

This will actually expand upon the game, allowing everyone to strive for it and enjoy it.

It also plays heavily into marketing- in today's day and age, "free" games come across as being scummy.
Following the lead games like TF2/Dota set by NOT selling out completely would set Spiral Knights apart.
This is especially prevalent due to the general reputation that MMOs hold.

Move over, there's bubble-wrap to be popped!

This is about the mixmaster, isn't it?

.

101% agree with the OP. Further argument is unnecessary.

Thank you both.

This could be exactly what they are doing with the mixmaster, but they haven't told us anything like that so I can only assume that there is a chance that it completely isn't and that the mixmaster is a new business strategy of sorts. The "communication" bit is really the most important part and as I said in the past, they don't need to tell us what they had for lunch, they do need to tell us the big picture of what's going on in our favorite MMO.

For all we know, they could be planning more weapons with the Gunner Update than the realigned damage/status variants they showed off (Fire Polaris, I'm looking at you). Maybe even a Part 2 so we could be satisfied with at least getting Part 1 finally.

Yes, that would be what we're all hoping.

I'm starting to think that they just aren't putting many resources into any sort of big update, and are instead focusing on other far more.

EDIT: Any one else? Anyone disagree that this is the correct course of action? Improvements?

Step Four: Release the Winmillion update

Yes, winmillion would be a good weapon to do this with.

Basically it is like selling

Basically it is like selling the new weapons in the game store and then at a later date making them available to the F2P community.

That is exactly what it is.

People that pay early get to test out the weapon in its early stages, experience any bugs, and come out with a superior costumed version of it that is much harder to get when all is said and done. This would make these weapons far far more desirable than they would normally be, while not sacrificing any of the game's integrity.

Still on about this.

That could work

Need I say any more? Another way of putting it is beta testing the new gear for awhile without using a test server and releasing the free version all bug-free and working great.
This sounds like a great plan.
