Hello fellow knights,

felt like blogging again today, so here's a quick howto on tweaking the game

Gratz on rehashing stuff that's been known since 2012. That option has been found in the multiple "tips and tweaks" guides.

Oh wait, didnt you post this exact stuff back then.
In fact, this comment from one of the tweaking guides links to your site (a now dead link since you changed the site format).

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

@Skeptic

It's probably just a repost on his blog, 'cause he re-did the blog and everything was lost from before. (If I remember right.)

@Autofire Correct. It's one

@Autofire
Correct. It's one of the pieces, I fished out of the database dump.

@Skepticraven

Exactly the reason why I made it a repost, I can't re-establish it under the old url.

a bit hostile, but

Skepticraven's response is a bit hostile. On the other hand, no player should be using these forums as his blog. Here are three options:

A. Make a new forum thread whenever you update your blog.

B. Have one forum thread about your blog, and add a new post to that thread whenever you update your blog.

C. Have one forum thread announcing the existence of your blog. After that, assume that everyone interested in your blog is reading your blog itself. So don't post to these forums about your blog again.

Currently you are doing option A. I favor option C. I mean, your posts might be of wide interest, but you don't want to come across as a spammer, right? As a compromise, could you at least try for option B?

@Bopp I think, I should

@Bopp

I think, I should explain myself here.

You are right, in an ideal world, C would be the way to go. Unfortunately, Spiral Knights is a dynamic community, new playersjoin as old players leave and no newcomer digs through the bottom of the forums to check if there's anything they might have missed. Furthermore, my webserver logs say that absolutely no one here runs an RSS reader. If I were to go with B, the inevitable result would be to eventually write for the crickets. Let's face it, the stuff I cover takes a lot of time to write. if you tell me that I cannot bring it to anyone's attention, then I might as well not bother with blogging at all.

So, this leaves us with option B. B leaves as with a well sorted forum (on the assumption that I was the only litterbug here) in exchange for one giant messy thread about life, the universe and everything (or the scrapyard, whichever applies). I can see the appeal in that, but it wouldn't work particularly well.
One of the reasons why I had to rebuild my website was a serious spambot infestation. I got some 5k-10k visits from them every day and those things were/are bad ass. No way of shutting them out. They managed to get around every CAPTCHA and then posted the most insane drivel of automatically generated text imaginable (believe me, it hurts your brain to read that stuff). After I rebuilt my blog, I found some 100+ spamposts in the moderation queue within just a few hours. That's when I came to realize that, no way in hell I would host a comment section that condems me to check daily for bot excrements. Nevertheless, having a way to allow real people to comment on my wish-wash is still desirable.
The one advantage I have over other bloggers is that I write for a very specific audience. My audience is here and that means, I don't have to host my own comment section. In fact, it would even be redundant to do so as the very nature of this forum is to discuss anything SK related. So putting the discussion here is convinient for me and no one has to read anything about viagra or 100% herbal handbags.

Yes, I know, offloading the comment section here is a bit cheap of me, but let's face it, OOO does a way better job at keeping the bot plague out.

I would have passed over this, but a little gunning mishap caused me to shift the client window off-screen in the middle of Lockdown.
I nearly forgot all about this tweak from the buried megathread. So hey. It helps I guess.

so in the end

So in the end you expect the entire Spiral Knights community to read each of your personal blog headlines. Of course, if every player with a blog did this, there would be chaos. But you deserve special privileges.

A month ago I had nothing but warm feelings for Spiral-Spy.

@Bopp

Of course not. I don't intent to bring everything here, but the bottom line is: writing only makes sense if it is read as well and the unfortunate truth is that this requires telling people about it.

Do you really want a hermetically sealed forum that doesn't link to the outside world? I mean, do you come here because you are into discussing over and over again that energy costs too much, that the game is dying, that new content is needed and when the gunner update might happen? That's what you get with a closed forum.
You accept that people link to their youtube channels (I really like those costume demos - mostly because I'm too lazy to start SpiralSpy myself), to their deviantart (heck, people basically run shops over in the treassure vault) and tumblr page. The difference between them and me is that I don't use a hosted service, but am able to run my own webserver. So this is not a question of deserving special, but the same privileges everyone else enjoys.

It more or less boils down to one (well, technically three) question(s): do you find what I do/write interesting? Would you welcome it as a forum post? If so, why does it matter so much where the content is kept?
The unfortunate thing is: I spend a considerable amount of time on coming up with my stuff (mostly because I tend to walk a very thin line). Since my blog is under my control, I can do things over there that I couldn't do here. If I were to do everything in forumposts (that can be done with forums), then my blog would starve. Which brings me back to the original problem: I don't write for the crickets (and spambots for that matter). If I put effort into something, I don't want it to be burried deep below hundreds of dull forumthreads created by people who can't even manage to put something meaningful in the subject line, let alone in the posts body.
So, as self-absorbed as this may sound, but If you want to play with my toys and intel, then it will have to either be "my party at my place or no party at all".

TIL how to turn my avatar.

Couldn't you just set the game resolution so it matches max res. of the monitor?

Is that really what you think?
From multiple perspectives -
Do you consider your blog "the outside world"?
Do you think that is all forumers talk about?
Do you have significantly different topics on your your own site?

I actually don't mind the posts here if they're about new stuff.

Although, this post could've had more too. Maybe a compilation of all the switches posted in the past, possibly with some new ones?

@Mystrian
That's how I play it, in a full resolution "window" (makes switching between windows a little faster), but still need to do the no title bar fix.

The window only moves if you click the title bar, right? I don't see how that happens often given the small percentage of screen space. Also when I launch the game I WANT to move the window because it appears dead center by default, which partly goes underneath my taskbar...

Exactly. The Arsenal podcast generates huge amounts of discussion, while also not spamming the forums with threads.

People being so negative towards someone who only tries to help the community (and has been doing so for a long time).
Pathetic.

summary

The original poster made a helpful post for the community. It could have been meatier or more original, but it was more valuable than most threads on these forums.

The original poster also made clear that he planned to spam the forums with links to his personal site (which is ad-supported). He was asked in an extremely polite manner not to. He was offered a compromise that has worked well in similar cases. He refused.
