Well, it seems a few of my actions have been misinterpreted and such, so in general... I'm here to help the wiki. Sometimes my ideas/actions seem drastic, huge, and redundant - am I hurting the wiki, even though I'm trying to help it? I generally try to avoid this conundrum, with the following:
-I want your feedback. If it seems like I've ignored you somehow, apologies. I really think we need more editors, so every opinion I see is very nice, even those that disagree with my own. Most of the time disagreement is actually good, we construct each other with perspectives and the wiki is better for it.
-I don't make huge changes without a decent amount of consensus. I will make small changes without much consensus. I will also do fixes without talking about them on forums, like making file names consistent - had to do that with guild hall things, battle sprite things (perk icons are still an issue), and several usables. Other than that, I always get feedback first. Sorry if my edits to the arcane salamander suit, mixmaster, and a couple others made it seem like I was pushing the "card" template discussed in another thread onto the wiki. No, was just experimenting with variables (different types of arsenal items and how they are acquired), and I wanted my less-coding-savvy friends to see them easily - I usually do a mini sandbox, but after a dozen or so derps trying to get people to go to the right place, I decided to just use the main pages this time. No harm done, since wiki pages can be reverted to old saved versions. But I won't be doing that again, because it's not conventional for an editor (though I tend to push things too early, like the main costume list), and caused more harm than good. But we learn from experimentation. Wording Implementing card template should have been hey just trying out the template in here and not a sandbox just so my feedbackers can see it easily and quickly no worries.. Communication is very important, which brings me to:
-I try pretty hard to communicate, especially with edit comments and template parameters/documentation (documentation is a more recent thing for me, I didn't even know we could do that until skeptic mentioned it a while ago on another thread), so people know what I'm doing, and can know what to do with my products if, as Chesh said one day, I get hit by a vehicle and can no longer edit the wiki. Lately my life has been horrendous, so I might not have been as clear as I could have been. Sorry specifically to Trillium for that.
-Always update the wiki with new content as best you can, never wait for a new idea! The wiki is "fine" the way it is, I just think it could be better. But what I think should not hold the wiki back. Players need info fast. Dedicated editors can always go in and make widespread changes later. The wiki needs to feed the questions of the masses, and that takes priority. Sorry if the "Card" idea has caused any of you to not make pages for the new items. I don't think it has? But the possibility occurred to me. Also the pages don't exist yet, so I was wondering about that. I would do them but I've been busy with my own projects. But hey, I did a few stats images. Hurray.
-give me feedback, even if you think it will hurt my feelings. I am a very sensitive person irl, yes, but my personal opinion and feelings have no place on the wiki. Fire away.
I love this game, and I want to help it - I hope that's clear.
I have to stop editing now, though. I had lots of time due to a family medical emergency, where I had to be on call taking care of my father for several days. It's easy to type at a computer and suddenly have to run from it to help in an emergency...so, yes, lots of time. But now other real life things are very much taking priority. Father is a lot better, and finals are next week.
Happy Holidays. Travel safely.
I don't usually participate in threads about players. I prefer to restrict my comments to the content --- game, wiki, etc. --- but I'll make an exception here.
It's great news that your father is doing better. That sort of thing can make everything else seem small.
You have been spending a conspicuous amount of time editing the wiki and participating in Wiki Editors. Frankly it seemed unsustainable. Regardless of your father's improvements, it's not a bad idea to take a break.
We clashed somewhat in the middle of the trading card thread. But I'm very pleased that we were conversing productively again by the end. Each of us should always keep in mind that the other is acting in good faith. I trust you.
In the end, wiki editing always involves a lot of compromises. It's usually good for accumulation of content (which is highly valuable), but less good for polished, coherent presentation (which is why I made my sword guide alone). I do agree that we should always slap new content up there, and argue about how to clean it up later.
Have a good break. Come back soon, but not sooner than you think you should.
