Weapon Charge Colours

Okay, so this isn't the biggest, greatest suggestion in the world, and it won't even have an impact on the game itself, but I would like to see something a little amusing added to the game.

The idea I'm going with here is to have the charge-aura, the light that emits from your knight when you've fully charged your weapon for a charge-attack, to reflect the type of damage your weapon will be dealing. Notice how enemies show spikes in the direction they're about to attack, and the colour representing the damage type they have? Like that, but for players (without the spikes). For example, right now we have a yellow aura, this could be used for Piercing weapons when they are charged up. When we're using a weapon that deals Normal damage, it would be red instead. Likewise, weapons that deal Elemental damage would emit a green aura and weapons dealing Shadow damage emit a purple aura.

AlexJS:
"The issue comes up with multi-type damage weapons like the Acheron (Shadow/Normal) or the Argent Peacemaker (Elemental/Piercing). I suppose either multi-colored rings or combining the two colors would work, or simply just picking the first one (but that would be lazy)."

I've been thinking about that one as well, but mixing together two colours may or may not be a little tricky. It'd be a nice touch if they do, but if not they should pick the second type for that weapon.
That way, Acheron would have a purple colour, Argent Peacemaker have a green colour, and Ionized Salt Bomb a yellow colour. Red would really only be for pure-Normal weapons in that sense. Although the former is indeed something they could work on, the latter, which I suggested, should work just as fine as a fallback-plan.

Like I said, it's not really a big thing I'm going about here, but rather a nice little effect that I would like to see. Useful? Not at all, just looks nice.

Opinions? I would like to hear what you guys think about this.

That is a pretty nice idea;

That is a pretty nice idea; easy to implement and consistent with enemy attacks. My only concern is that other party members in particularly hectic engagements might confuse players charging with enemies telegraphing their attacks.

too simple

your suggestion, as you suggested, isn't the greatest or biggest, in fact its too simple. therein lies the brilliance :D
of all the countless suggestiosn, bad to awesome, small to huge, minor to major, this is one that should be implemented right away.

For the simple fact that it doesn't change the game, for the simple fact that this, in fact, streamlines the game. It changes next to nothing, and yet, enhances the overall experience.

@Effrul

I don't think it would be a problem, seeing as it's just the glow, and it's easy enough to spot. Like I said, we won't have the spikes, just the colours.

Thanks a lot for the support, I'm hoping that the admins will see this and agree with us. Let's hope for the best!

Good Idea

This would be really useful when you go into the clockworks with a group, as you would be able to see what types of weapons your team mates are using, and see how balanced the team is.

I appreciate the input and I hope that this is something we can look forward to in a future update.

Just what IS bumping...?

What my header said. But maybe personal colour would be preferable by some people. I can only guess by that thread about it earlier.

Still, this idea does sound cool.

Used to send a dying thread to the first page without adding any content to the post or the thread itself. A way of keeping it alive in short.

And yeah, I've been thinking about the personal colour charge as well, however, since this was not my initial suggestion and seeing as it was suggested by someone else I'd rather ask for their permission to feature said idea in my own thread.

If you can link the thread to me (unless I somehow manage to find it myself) I could get talking.

RE: Well....

Again, personal colour charge wasn't initially my idea, and has already been suggested by someone else. I don't want a reputation for "stealing suggestions". Some people tend to get quite upset about it.

Also, thanks for the support, Fallout. Well, assuming you're supporting it anyhow..!

Love it. Great idea. They

Love it. Great idea. They should add this quickly

As for weapons with 2 types of damage, such as Divine Avenger and Gran Faust (For the braggard inside me - I have both), I think just put anything other than normal, would over ride the normal color. So the Faust would have a purple (Dark Damage) glow, and the Divine Avenger a green (Elemental Damage) glow. This would be nice, since the crits, and "soft" hits (grey numbers) are applied to these anyways.

A variant of the idea...

I like the idea sugjested above, however to add some realism, why not create some other charge animations with these?

What I sugjest is instead of just four colors (Red/Green/Yellow/Purple), instead there would be more to include status resistances, and this can be broken down into a simple listing...

-Normal/Piercing: Default or a new animation (default could be used elsewhere).
-Pure Elemental: (Example DA) Default or a new animation depicting "light" (since most pure elemental weapons have that charistic of being holy).
-Pure Shadow: Purple/Black, could be in the form of dark clouds gathering as a kind of fog during the charging up animation...
-Elemental/Fire: Red/Orange, could be depicted by a different style of fire instead of the ailment condition of fire we see a lot.
-Elemental/Frost: Light Blue, something similar to pure shadow but a little less "sinister".
-Elemental/Shock: Teal, could be depicted by eraticaly moving particles moving inward during the charge animation, followed by a glow acompanied with spasms of electricity.
-Poison: Since poison can be found on many types of weapon types, it would be better to have it as its own individual type. It would be a darkish green color in a style similar to shadow.
-Curse: This would atm be a unique animation for the Gran Faust if they do a curse animation. Similar in style to shadow but with a dark red/magenta color.

If they were to break it down this way, they would need to make the charge color unique enough to not confuse players of thinking they have said ailments, however this would allow us to know what status effect our allies are aplying without looking at the weapon itself to figure that out. Having different charge animations also would be a nice match up in terms of the weapons themselves (I don't know but it bugs me sometimes when I see a whitish glow surrounding a user using a Gran Faust).

A more time consuming but also ideal idea would be to make each weapon have their own charge animation, this would require the most work on OOOs part, since there are so many weapons in Spiral Knights.

RE: A variant of the idea...

I like what you're suggesting, but that seems like an awful lot of work to let each damage type and status type have their own animation. I asked for a re-colour, but you seem to want to take it to the next level!

I have an idea of how all of these could look like, but the best way for me to show it would be drawing it, rather than trying to explain it. If I come around to drawing things, I'll leave some links in.

Thank you for your input.

lemonjello23, I already stated that this is not my suggestion. It has also been suggested by someone else, so adding this to the OP is a bit too late now.

While I like the idea in an innovative sense I feel that having too much visual flare on the screen could be distracting. As it is now, the charge colors being the same color for all knights universally let's me know that they are roughly "over there". If I'm in the middle of dealing with mobs and I see something green coming towards me it may actually cause me to react much like I would to a monster. And that could prove to be a mistake if I end up getting tagged from the direction I was initially facing.

I'm not sure if other players deal with the immediate situation to them and react to visual cues the way I do, but I can see this being a giant pain in my backside. Still it's a novel idea and might be fun.

I agree with Ailment, this is a great idea! But, as Shidara said, this would be a lot of work for the SK team, especially as it would require the SK team to re-characterize almost every sword in a different way. Nonetheless, I wholly agree with the idea and hope the devs read this. (Hope I don't sound high and mighty in this post.)

Time to undust this thread...

@stupysays
Considering how large this glow is, it seems very unlikely that you'd mistake a large, green glow running around for an enemy. I am aware that it would take a little getting used to, as with most visual changes, but I don't believe this is something that would bug you for much longer than your first couple of runs after it has been implemented.

@v0rtexknight
Yes, what Ailment suggested sounds terribly tedious to work with for the developers, but the idea is very exciting and like I said, if I can get around to drawing my ideas it would give a decent idea of what Ailment had in mind (although I have some adjustments to his version in mind). I like the idea and would therefore like to get it out there, even though it seems unlikely that we'll see such a huge graphical improvement in near future. Otherwise, my original idea shouldn't prove as difficult to implement and would be more than enough to keep me satisfied for a while. Thank you for your input and support.

I like the idea it shows promise simple but interesting all the same and has no real impact in the game but amusing all the same!

I see no issue with it making problem cause you have to have a real eye problem not to notice the difference! and if you did you should see an eye doctor asap

+1. Love this idea. Never got why everyone looked the same charging up weapons anyway.

Speaking of which, what about different charge 'positions' - ie, Sudaruska looks weird being charged because it's under the shield. why not charge it over a shoulder or behind the character? Similarly, I think that the flourish lines might be better being charged to the right side, where they would be seemingly easier to thrust forward.

@Carthiah

Thank you for your support.

I can't say much about charge-positioning of the sword, but I think it's because a lot of charges are left-to-right slashes, and that's why they're animated like that. I will agree that it looks a bit odd, but it's a common animation for all swords, and I'm not too sure if Three Rings want to make unique animations to certain weapons.

However, this is not the topic for this discussion. Thank you for your input, though.
