...Gah, wrong again.

Did a couple of T2 runs down to Basil today. On one of those he had a Faust recipe.
"Oh hey" think I, "that's one of those Sealed Sword thingies! They're supposed to be pretty good, I'll buy the recipe and sell it on the Auction House for a modest profit." So I did. Or at least, I did the buying part.
Turns out there's a whole bunch of unsold Faust recipes on the AH already. Quite a few, in fact, and even the ones below the 10K vendor price have no bids. Turns out it's not as popular as I thought, so I'm probably going to have to sell it for a loss. Annoying. Same story with the Dark Thorn Blade recipe I picked up a few days ago - it's been on the AH a few times at cost price and not sold. Not even a nibble.
I really need to either (a) familiarise myself with the going rates for recipes on the AH, or (b) stop trying to be a recipe wheeler-dealer and stick to just buying stuff for my own use.
Anyone else stuck with recipe-buyer's regret?

faust gets no love since vanaduke is undead/fire plus the curse that could happen on oneself
I have been looking through basils stock every now and then and asked myself if I should buy one to put on AH..
The awnser has always been "Nah, better not, no-one will probably buy it, since no-one wants to pay what things are worth anymore."
1: Check the market to see the average prices for things, how in-demand things are, etc, -before- investing in any ''stock''.
2: Most profit from recipes would mostly be from 5* Recipes since 1~4* are much more easily obtainable, and at much lower costs from the NPC. This is why most recipes around 4*, for example, only go for a mere 1~2k more than the NPC sells for in the market, on average. Not much profit.
I learned the first lesson the hard way recently when I bought a 5* recipe I -assumed- was worth enough, at least 5k+ profit or so. After buying it I -then- check the market and it turns out a lot of that particular recipe was going for just 2k or so more than what the NPC offers. At that point I ended up selling it for NPC-price because I just wanted to at least get my crown back and forget it ever happened.
With my crown back, thankfully, it's another lesson learned.
Open up another client and use a second account to check AH prices. Then just buy anything profitable. Though, in my experience, any recipe below 5* is just not profitable enough to be the effort. Do this in T3 though and you can make a killing.

I've sold Rock Jelly Mail recipe for 18,5k today (8,5k profit). It was the only one Rock Jelly Mail recipe available at AH. I guess with new update some players are looking for extra piercing dafense.
On the other hand, my investment in Spike Shower was a failure. There are lots of those in AH and even the ones below Basil's price have no bids. I guess I'll just keep it for now.

As for items not having bids, that doesn't mean much. It seems as if people don't want to bid on things if it will tie up their money for a while, unless they can get an exceptional deal on something. If someone wants a recipe, they'll usually just take it at the buyout price.

I did the same thing and finally sold it for a very small profit. A bit later, a friend stated the obvious about why faust recipes don't sell: Any player who can use the recipe must have made many passes past basil on their way to kill the JK to get the jelly gems.
Good luck selling it for any sort of profit. There is going to be a stead stream of idiots like me who think "oh! this will sell" to keep the AH flooded...
Two days ago I sold a Wolver Cap (which I find are highly popular) for 1,800 Crowns, making an 800 Crown profit, in ten minutes. You just have to know which recipies are popular, set the bidding time for very long, set a profitable buy price, and wait.
well, faust is pretty cool, but most people, including me, suggest that getting an avenger is better, rather than a weapon that doesn't have the same affect. if the gran faust, the weapon after faust, had the same affect as the divine avenger with the 3 swords charging out, but with the curse affect with it, then people would suggest getting the faust than the avenger.
and its the same with the dark thorn blade recipe. people would rather do things with a little more challenge, like the jelly king for regular players. and because people won't really buy that kind of recipe is because they can easily get it at token trader, which isn't really a surprise because there's only three things for frumious fangs. if they had anything else for frumious fangs, then people might have reconsidered.
Wait for the new gremlin boss stratum which might rise faust utility?

My advice is to avoid 4* recipes for reselling. With 2* and 3* instead I always earn good money.
Problem I see is not that they don't sell it's that the AH is flooded with the recipes similar to that of the Avenger recipe and I think it's because people have the mind set that it's an easy seller so if basil has that recipe it's getting purchased all the time, and honestly I see faust and Avenger all the time at basil and even bought both recipes in the past thinking the same thing but now I know better.
Personally I made a list of things I see sell well, stuff people are bidding on and stuff I've sold in the past and it's worked out.
I learned early on that selling 4-5* recipes on the AH is a bad idea. You actually make way more money selling the slightly obscure 2-3* recipes, especially if you familiarize yourself with the most profitable ones (hint: they aren't as popular as wolver coats, but they are more popular than crystal bombs :P)
You can only get the special 3* recipes from T2 basil. People who have moved onto T3 can only get 4-5*, and when you are in T2, basil usually trolls you with only 1-2*, so 3* is really good to sell. 2* is nice, but you have to know which ones are not so popular that the market is flooded with them.
Sometimes very much so, but most of the time I can make at least a modest profit. Fausts are still popular enough that you can probably sell it eventually, if you wait for more favorable conditions. You might also try offering it on the trade channel. That's often a tedious prospect, but it's risk free. Unfortunately, your money might be tied up for a while unless you take a loss.
