I've been using an Xbox 360 controller to play this game, and it's pretty awesome. I've been working lately to make the controller more useful.

Does anyone else use a gamepad or controller?
What kind?
Have you had any problems setting up, or using buttons the way you want to?

I'm slightly envious of using a 360 controller. The only controller I have that I could use would be a Wiimote... and I can't see how that would work.

I use the mouse and keyboard to test mostly as I need to put myself in the shoes of an average user, but when playing for fun I absolutely prefer a 360 gamepad.

I use a Hori 360 USB

I use a Hori 360 USB Controller it works WONDERFULLY. I was happy when I saw WASD worked but when I found out the 360 remote worked without any extra mapping needing? LOVE.

The only thing I'd like to get to work is using vials with it. Right now I can't map the D pad or the back triggers to any of them otherwise it freaks out.

I have been meaning to plug in a PS2 controller and use that. Am I right to assume I can map movement to one joystick and facing to the other? Maybe I should just try it out for myself and see what happens.

I've got an old eDimensional

I've got an old eDimensional G-Pad Pro that I'd like to use once I've got it unpacked. It's pretty similar in design to a Dualshock n' everything.

Not that mouse-n'-keyboard are bad either, but the game's definitely designed in a way that a controller would feel totally natural too.

I have a USB Gravis Gamepad

I have a USB Gravis Gamepad Pro, it looks an awful lot like an old PS1 controller in that there's a D-pad but no analog sticks; this means i have to assign 'face ' to the same button as 'move '

if i say something in chat, then try to move, i will face the appropriate direction but not actually walk anywhere until i use the mouse

i also can't seem to navigate dialog trees with NPCs with the gamepad so i end up having to switch back to the mouse for that too, its a little annoying so i'm sticking with the mouse/keyboard for now

My 360 controller mappings

@grohac: You should be able to map the vials to controller buttons now.

My 360 controller mappings:

Left analog stick: facing directions
left "D pad": also facing directions, so that I can face pure left (although there's a bit of bugginess with this...)
Right analog stick: moving
left/right shoulder buttons: prev/next weapon
right trigger: action/weapon
left trigger: shield
"back" button (small button next to the left stick): toggle all windows

Then, my vial/capsule quickslot buttons are: A, B, Y, X, start; in that order (A is 1, and then they spiral around!)

I find this to be a very sweet setup, but it's difficult to set up correctly because the trigger buttons actually map to two different things: one when you squeeze them, one when you release them. To get it to get the right one took some trial and error.

It would be really cool if we could have a few standard controller types, like xbox, logitech, etc, and provide some default configurations to make setup easier.

Some quick notes

I believe that for the Microsoft Xbox 360 gamepad, controls are pre-configured. However, for players looking to use other gamepads, here are some notes/tips:

  • When you configure controls in the Options menu, don't use "Move Fwd", "Move Back", "Move Left", and "Move Right". These movement commands are "relative" to your character's facing, and you probably want "absolute". So, scroll down the menu a bit; the commands you want to bind are:
    • Move NORTH
    • Move SOUTH
    • Move WEST
    • Move EAST
    • Face North
    • Face South
    • Face West
    • Face East
  • You CAN set these to the same input. That is, if you just want the game to control like Zelda, for instance, you'd want to set Move North and Face North to upwards on the Left Analog stick. Do the same for the other cardinal directions.
  • However, if you want sweet twin-stick action, like Geometry Wars or Robotron, you'll want the MOVE and FACE commands on two different sticks. Usually, you'd set Move to the left stick, and Face to the right stick.
  • If you go with Zelda-like controls, or simply don't have two control pads/sticks on your gamepad, be sure to set one of the shoulder buttons (or similar input) to use the Strafe command. While you hold down the Strafe button, your character will "lock" to face a given direction. This will help a lot for the run & gun bits of the game.

@ wtfwtf_ok: I have a very similar setup with a MadCatz 360 controller, it's not the prettiest but it works great. Although my sticks are swapped, I can't imagine moving with the right stick and facing with the left, that's completely opposite of every game I've played with a controller, ever. Are you left-handed or something?

For standard xbox controllers, yes you need the USB dongle. $35 at amazon. Or they sell a bundle of controller + dongle for $60. I found the pairing to be a little finicky, sometimes requiring me to unplug and replug the dongle and re-pair.

Or they have the wired for windows ones for $37. No problems with this one, and you won't forget to to turn it on before launching the game.

These all work fine on Mac, as long as you use these drivers instead: http://tattiebogle.net/index.php/ProjectRoot/Xbox360Controller/OsxDriver

I've also tried a Logitech gamepad I found at Best Buy, and it worked straight outta the plastic on my Mac, but ultimately I didn't like that it was more of a ps3 configuration.

Well I got my controller today.
Xbox 360 wired controller for Windows.

It works great.
My only real gripe right now is that I have to look at where the gun is pointing to aim.
It's a little bit annoying to adjust to.
Still 300 to 400 thousand times better than using a laptop touchpad, however.

I've been using a Logitech

I've been using a Logitech Dual Acton gamepad the whole time.

I have the left stick bound to move and look, so it functions like the default WASD binds.
The right stick is set to only look. I usually use it for aiming while standing still.
The D-pad is bound to just moving. I can use it with the right stick for strafing.

The left triggers are set to action and defend.
The back right trigger is set to next weapon.
The face buttons (1-4) are set to items, while the front right trigger is item 5.
The remaining "select" and "start" buttons (9 and 10) are for menus.

Now, OOO, you have a wonderfull moneymaking here: make your own controller, avaible in any game store right near you, and make to ensure that you would have the most used features at your handpalms >_<

Controllers vs. Menu navigation . . . FIGHT!

Uhh, just a few quick things for your new little feechure.

A cursor blur so you know where your cursor was and where it's going.
It's kind of a personal preference, but it just makes the whole process look a lot smoother than it actually is.

Can't use them to navigate the Inventory and Arsenal yet, I imagine this is intended right now.

When scrolling through maps, when I hit the end of the viewable range (top or bottom), scroll it for me so I don't have to go over to the down button and press the button. Was kind of surprised this wasn't already added in.

Also, just another little thing that will help me (and many other people regardless of peripherals) is saving selection states.
So if I change the default options, make the options I alter them to the current default options, so I don't forget and have to stuff around for another minute just to get back to have and do it right, or join a party in progress accidentally, etc.

EEEEEEDIT: Uhh, another thing, if action and attack were two different buttons that would be super. Having two attack buttons on my controller seems kinda... Redundant.

I use a 360 controller as well, and use Xpadder to set up my control scheme.

The only issue I have is when I have the controller on prior to turning on the game, it auto-detects my controller and sets up controller configs of it's own, which interfere with my setup. The main thing I don't like is that it gives my analog full 360 control, which is annoying when you want to aim with a gun. I wish it didn't do that, so I just make sure I turn on my controller AFTER the game is loaded and I'm fine.

I found my wired xbox360

I found my wired xbox360 controller and decided to give it try.

A few issues I ran into:
- I have not been able to bind the right trigger (RT) to any function. Left trigger (LT) works fine and is represented as "#0 Z Axis+".
- I have not been able to bind D-pad direction 'left/back' and 'up' to any function. Binding 'right/forward' (#0 POV X+) and 'down' (#0 POV Y+) works, but only in either (Key) column 2 OR 3.

Reading how people have been able to bind RT, D-pad 'left' and D-pad 'up', I'm wondering why I am not able to do so. This is just a plain xbox360 wired controller under Windows7 x64, no special drivers (since I've not run into any game that required any).

And more in general there seems to be no way to escape the keybinding dialog once you've initiated the keybinding process, other than to input the original key.
This is ofcourse fine, but requires some more effort when trying to associate a key/button to a function that is currently bound to 'none'.
Additionally, it doesn't warn or ask for confirmation when binding already associated keys/pad/mouse buttons to another function.

EDIT: Same result with 3 wireless xbox360 controllers, one of them with the 'improved, transforming D-pad'.

The problem for your D-Pad

The problem for your D-Pad issue is actually the drivers. Microsoft was stupid with the PC drivers, and it's hard to get proper input from the D-Pad using the regular 360 drivers.

There are 3rd party drivers that fix those issues, but I don't remember the name off hand unfortunately.

As to the issue with the Triggers -- That might be your controller. The triggers are considered an Axis, the Z Axis, on any drivers, and the fact that it can recognize + and not - means it may be your controller's fault it's not working there.

I have been tempted to try

I have been tempted to try out an XBox controller myself. I would be much more agile playing the classic FPS way, as in Halo or CoD. So what exactly would one need to do, with no previous experience or setup, in order to get an XBox wired, and wireless, controller working on SK? I've seen bits and pieces of different steps on this thread, but would anyone be willing enough to sum it all up into one nice walkthrough?

I cant remember, but I think some buttons were mapped the moment you plug it in.

Otherwise, to map the buttons simply go to Options -> Controls in-game and assign the buttons as you wish. The game allows for whatever layout you'd feel is most comfortable.

I much prefer the mouse to aiming in this game over my pad, but that's nothing more than personal preference.

Xbox360 wireless

Xbox 360 wireless controller pad user here. I have my main analog joystick mapped to both face and move, for Zelda-like controls. Works really well.

Going up and down elevators works most of the time. Works within inventory and NPC conversation, too. The joystick moves the cursor to the next closest button, in whatever direction you pointed.

I control guns better with a mouse. I still use the controller (d-pad in this case) for movement, so I end up with one hand on the controller, and one on the mouse.

Back in beta, the D-pad and the triggers didn't work completely, and moving from object to object didn't work as well. They do work now, which leads me to believe that controller pad compatibility is something OOO does care about. If it's not working for you, I'd say go ahead and send them a bug report.

PS2 controller here

Years ago I bought this radio shack adapter to connect my Playstation one controller to my PC via USB. My PS one controller died some time ago and I'm currently using the PS2 dual-shock controller with the same adapter to play SK. I'm able to use the same controller via adapter on windows xp, mac os x 10.4, and windows 7 without any issues. I was completely surprised by the lack of compatibility problems.

I didn't read the whole thread but it seems that most if not everyone (who're using a gamepad anyway) are using the xbox controller. I would've gone that route too if I didn't already have this adapter. Am I the only one using a playstation controller?
