Linux client for Steam

A solution for Steam account players on Linux is long overdue, and with Grey Havens now at the helm and keen on fixing things I thought I would drop this suggestion. The game itself, being Java based, works fine on Linux, but there is simply no official way of launching it with a Steam account. The web session trick was removed long ago.

You can still login with the standalone client if you preload the proper Steam libraries, but as of the Steam controller support update the client crashes without modification, once you do patch the controller support however the game works beautifully with all Steam features, so a official update should be fairly easy.

Now that's not to say I'm all talk and no walk, I know you gents at Grey Havens have a small team, and I would be more than willing to help with the creation of a Linux build, just drop me a line.

Would this be for all Linux based Operating Systems?

@Nizada: Yes, since java is cross-platform, the only limitation is the executable for steam that doesn't exist. Hopefully Grey Heavens listens, since I've been waiting since I linked my steam account by mistake...

Mac OS (steam and non-steam) too

I would like the Mac OS client updated to use the newer Java and have it included in the client (like it is on Windows).

Right now I have SK running inside a Windows VM on my Mac because I don't want to install the old Java from Apple.

I am less concerned with Steam on Mac, but the same change (updated Java version) would probably benefit the Steam users too.

Thanks for the consideration and the hard work!

pls

@Sinkillerj,

Do you have a guide to do this (preloading / patching the steam libs)? There was one here on the forums long time ago but I could not find it anymore...

@Yyx-Blu Last time I posted

@Yyx-Blu Last time I posted that information it was removed with no reason given, and unfortunately as client modification is now required to work around the controller issue I'm pretty confident it would just be removed again. I may toss a automated Linux patcher/launcher up on GitHub at some point if they dont reach out to me or fix it on their own.

@Sinkillerj An automated

@Sinkillerj

An automated launcher would be pretty awesome but I wouldn't mind if it was a manual procedure.
It's just that I don't have the knowledge, I don't know where to start. The only thing I remember was something related to injecting some Steam libraries when the game was loading.

Still, I hope Grey Havens take note on this. I stopped playing this game because of the OS limitation (which it makes me feel bad because the game is supported natively...) and I don't think I'm the only one.

If the developer team does not give us SteamOS compatibility, then I think you would be the only one that could.

I suppose the only reason this has not been done yet is an overwhelming fear that the task of adding steam logins to linux will somehow result in a login loophole back when facebook logins were a thing.

Either way I have been waiting for this feature for 3 years.
