I dont know how any of you guys havent post about this yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYIiMR2mDN0 This old video shows what spiral used to be
I mean take a close look, when you hit a monster and you deal great damage it used to pop some sort of big stars
And you if normal damage then the star would be blue, also the weapos used to look cool, it was simple. The UI now is so full of pointless stuff, like if you press P now, you will see a big difference from now and then. I mean they should at least add a feature where you can switch between new and old gui, also the old UI of course will improve perfomance on bad computers.http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=48211597 take a look at that i mean, useful bar with energy, useful bar with crowns, super awesome red/green/yellow dot that shows how dangerous is this level according to your armor and weapons.

I really miss this thing about the game, i mean i can stand the grind, the over priced items, the over priced energy, the low change to get a book or a black kat, the new fire system, the ugly af core, but mean the old UI was way better.
Leave a comment on what you think
Old awesome gui and effects
For me the only thing should have done to improve the old guy was to clean up some of the graphics in the knight inspect tab like the icons and add an hide GUI button near the map to hide all the GUI in the screen,if the did something like this everything would have been fine...
The only improvement which I see from the new GUI is the new icons which look way better and nothing much.
The worst one in my opinion is that huge player icon in the top left corner i understand why they might put it but its useless and also very buggy .
As for when playing in arcade i think the new GUI is way better than the old one to a certain extent. i dont like having items icons on the top of the screen my main issue with the new GUI is when switching weapons ,the weapon switching icon that appears near the players blocks my field of view...
Personally they should have just cleaned up the old GUI 'graphic aspects of it' rather than rearranging most of the GUI placements to just end up making it worst than the old one...
Honestly i really agree i dont play spiral knights often anymore because of the new gui... i know its strange but im not used to it so i would come back and play hardcore mode if they realesed the old ui again espically old item icons and old character icons in missions :) too much nostalgia atm ;)
Yes, it's nostalgia. The game's core mechanics haven't changed, you can dive right back into it. Pro tip if you don't like how "obstrusive" the new UI is: you can just click dem arrows at the side of the menus to hide them. Now isn't that great.
The old UI was just a pixelized mess, and players who haven't had the "chance" to see it will never have a single complaint about the new one. And I'm sure that if the game reverted back to the old UI, all those who haven't experienced it will post this exact same kind of thread asking for the opposite.
i agree with you 90% its just if the old ui returned i think that it would have to options for the old one and the new one so for the new players nothing would change for them good point hippo :)
But not actually trying to get the old one, i mean we all know it is pretty bad and they could just put an option to switch between UIs. That would bring back old players that left the game i bet.
i really hope gm's are reading this, :) their are alot of players who want the old ui ;)
Bringing the old UI back won't do much. It may be cool for a day or two, but the core complaints remain. Forge, LD, same levels....so much more. Now, if GH made a level-developing kit like mario maker (or something of that magnitude), then the game's stagnation could be broken.
Having the ability to change to the new one in the settings would be nice. Maybe a classic mode in the settings on Game. Where you can check it and bam, old UI.
I wish the amount of ce and crowns i have was always on the screen
Hmm, old effects and UI... well, Spiral Knights Preview is using both of them again. It's possible to use only effects, textures and player info files on current Spiral Knghts game but not old UI completely, only few parts, like energy indicator and buttons... Even energy costs can put back on the elevator.
(removed)
What you mean by using them both? And again? Is the preview sever opened? Can i contact you in the game? Thanks
No, Testing server is not open. About 5 months earlier Testing server used new content(newer Textures, effects, UI), but now it's on earlier version with old content or something...
I need to check some things about the installation thanks
maybe that means their hinting at an older server or just old ui i hope for either one of them :)
Maybe, anyway old UI, effects, textures, player info files and other files are surely there. Looks like GH have few ideas what to do with SKP, i guess they make it as normal server, so it's like same SK game but with old modifications and theres no more SKP. Well atleast it looks so to me.
man if their is an old server i would play that so hard lol, But anyways this is a big conversation its number 1 besides admin post on the fourms so hopefully it gets their attention that the players of sk really want old servers or just the old ui in general in the old servers i want mist energy and mist tanks and all that. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh stahhhhhhhhp tuuu much nastalgia ;)
This "old SK Preview" was actually 5 mouths earlier up-to-date, but looks like GH "downgraded" it. Ofc old things from old SK are cool, like heart sharing, closed achievements, old graphics, golden monsters, even starligh cradle what i mad post about and many other things.... or maybe that's the thing they're doing with Spiral Knights Preview server...
Maybe, Im hoping this alot if they are and they announce it i guarantee you so much old players are gonna come back and IF they announce it im going to jump out my window ;)
Then i hope you're not living higher that first floor.
does that mean you think that old servers are coming thyrux because you said "Then i hope you're not living higher that first floor." :O 2011 servers COME PLEASE XD
Not anymore... xD. No, actually why not? There's nothing to test atm, why not to make it some playing server?
We got new admins, its time to call them out for what we need!
While a legacy UI would be nice, it really should just allow for old positions of things while maintaining the current artstyle.
All the old UI icons are still in the game files last I checked. Bringing it back would likely be easier than we think, however we should probably take note of the good and bad of both systems.
OLD UI
-
+ The good
- Small, clean, condensed
- Can see exact health of teammates
- Everything you need to know about yourself is condensed on the bottom center of the screen
-
- The bad
- No shield bar
- Health gets cluttered once it breaks a certain threshold
- No charge meter
NEW UI
-
+ The good
- Expressive and modern - all menus and icons retain a nice theme
- Can see exact status of teammates from glancing at their party icon
- Privacy for your money (in screenshots)
- Many more visual indicators (weapon wheel, charge meter, red vignette, shield bar)
- Nice visual for health values (red, silver, gold)
-
- The bad
- Giant character portrait that doesn't scale well at all
- Splits up the information about yourself between the top left of your screen and the center of your screen.
- Weapon wheel is only way to tell if a weapon is cursed, and if you find it intrusive, you'll never know what is cursed
- More prone to cause lag
- Quite cluttered and more chaotic
So while the old UI maybe more "nostalgic", it has less going for it in the long run, while also having less wrong with it. The new UI has much more positives while also having many more negatives.
A "classic" and "modern" setting that swaps between the positioning of things, and perhaps making the UI flatter in classic to keep it a bit nostalgic, would be a good move IMO. There are valid reasons for both UIs.
However to be perfectly honest I'd love to just be able to customize information. I like the old UI's info at the bottom of my screen, however top left is alright for me as well. Honestly my biggest gripe with the new UI is all the clutter - weapon wheel being the biggest thing that annoys me. I turned it off so I can have a better experience but now I never know what is cursed.
Actually Charge meter is not included with UI, it's extra .dat file located on rsrc\character\charge-bar.dat and charge-transformed.dat . So, i guess charge meter is not the problem.
It's an integral part of the UI now-a-days. When I say "new UI" I mean "whatever wasn't in the old UI". The old UI didn't have battle sprite icons in it either, so regardless it would need to be modified to show their cooldowns.
Okay, what do you mean under "battle sprite icon" sprite's portrait or inventory icon? Anyway cooldown indicator moving should be easy.
After looking back what I said years back. And the current me before leaving this game.
Hell with either old or new UI... Hardcore UI should be implemented because I almost never look at any of the indicators anymore. Even the map, thanks to map toggling. Hot keys and my game intuition are always on point.
The old UI isn't coming back. There have been tons of these types of threads over the past few years, and they haven't changed a single thing. Don't get me wrong; I preferred the old UI, but we're stuck with the current one, and nothing we can say is gonna change that (believe me, everything you can think of has already been said before in one way or another).
Yes, but then players wroted to OOO, but now we're writing to GH. Well, atleast i'll try to find a way to use old UI. old UI is sightly differently developed that new one, so it's not very easy to put it back together. So this should take pretty long.
I mean, it's mostly a name change and re-acquisition of their property in full. This just means they don't have to answer to higher-ups redirecting their attention to mobile games that may or may not fail before fully being released.
While a classic UI would be wonderful, the grey haven's name isn't going to get us anything faster than three rings did.
But yeah, both battle sprite bits weren't in the old UI at all. Shield bar wasn't either. Forge icon wasn't there either. Plenty of things have changed that would need to be accounted for if the old UI were to come back, but having several UI setups would be nice for options.
Yeah, name doesn't change anything, but OOO did not even read those posts. Looks like GH atleast read and if possible, then they try to change something. OOO didn't even try, they just wanted money. I beleave that the GH can change SK to unknown, but in long time ofc. But we'll see...
We currently have no plans to revert the game's UI to a previous version or provide an option to do so. That UI was in place long before a number of changes and would take a significant amount of work to accomplish. Given that many like the current UI, we plan to focus our efforts on other areas of the game.
Woo go actual response!
It's actually fairly nice to have answers like these to multiple-year-old questions. I assume the same thought process is in the works over old systems in the game, such as mist energy and the old style of heating. Having a big ol' "nah that isn't coming back" for the big changes officially would be something worthwhile to have, should you all be on the same page about it. It's a nice pointer for those of us who answer questions that old timers have after a long time of being gone.
That being said I still would like some sort of visual indicator of what weapon of mine is cursed without the weapon wheel, and if my shield bash is cursed. Something like footprints becoming a glowing eye (changed like how some auras change it) when a cursed weapon is currently out would be one way to do it.
Heck I should just make that its own suggestions forum post. Excuse me while I revert my writeup to that area.
It's actually fairly easy to switch to the old UI if you know how. That being said, certain icons like sprites, fire crystals, things that came out later than sooner have no old icons and making them old icons poses a problem. It would be unprofessional to make a placeholder icon for all of that.
- Cronus: We currently have no plans to revert the game's UI to a previous version or provide an option to do so.
You may want to update your plans soon, three years is a long time due.
- [...] and would take a significant amount of work to accomplish.
How significant? How comparable would it be to the effort put into the ones for alpha, beta and launch versions?
- Given that many like the current UI [...]
Yet many liked the old one before the change and still like the old one nowadays. I vividly recall the comments on such being very vocal when the new UI was launched. Was any of that not considered at all?
- [...] we plan to focus our efforts on other areas of the game.
Like removing the blockade quarantining the late section on the side of the Jelly Farm level?
- No-More-Starlight: That being said, certain icons like sprites, fire crystals, things that came out later than sooner have no old icons and making them old icons poses a problem.
Not a problem at all for those that already do.

Besides, the making of these icons demands no complex shapes, only simple and responsive designs that stand up to the pre-existing ones. This should be the least of Grey Havens' worries.
- It would be unprofessional to make a placeholder icon for all of that.
Not at all true, a placeholder is a vital tool in development. You may have intended to word it differently, like making placeholder icons for all of them, then releasing and using them into the full game.
Placeholder files were also used to push the access to new features for players in the preview servers, which is sensibly understandable.
i really liked the old UI, my thoughs on the new one its well.. not so great like the previous UI but works fine somehow. But my MAIN PROBLEM with the current UI its THE BIG KNIGHT PORTRAIT.
Why is so big?
WHAT ITS THE REASON BEHIND THE BIG PORTRAIT? To tell me which knight i am???
Big Knight portrait there serves no purpose. other than being a big chunk of annoying picture. they have should make the knight portrait be so small that only show the head of the knight like the old UI. i even think its enough that the status bar would be fine with the Knight name.
Big Character portrait it just plain useless.
I would like to have the UI back? Hell Yes. but i feel i would be more comfortable if they just remove the big portrait knight or modify to be a little head portrait. with that small work i would be fine with the New UI.
I'm pretty sure the big portrait of your knight is for A) making you stand out from your teammates, B) having enough wiggle room to fit the rest of the player HUD next to (heat bar, health and shield bars, player name and rank), and C) make the "portrait menu" options easier to click on (such as go solo, leave party, etc).
Granted all of these things could still be present with a smaller portrait, but really the only issue I have with the portrait is it doesn't scale, so smaller resolutions get hit pretty hard in the situational awareness prospects. Heck, something like a "minimize" button (like the other UI arrows) that switches the portrait from large to small would be fair and fit in with the current setup.
- Fangel: I'm pretty sure the big portrait of your knight is for A) making you stand out from your teammates [...]
A sensibly different background font and/or highlight would have mitigated this.
- [...] B) having enough wiggle room to fit the rest of the player HUD next to (heat bar, health and shield bars, player name and rank) [...]
Which presented a new, more pronounced inconvenience: the location of said room.
- [...] and C) make the "portrait menu" options easier to click on (such as go solo, leave party, etc).
Shortkey commands would be far more accurate and reliable options in the midst of action, where looking away from potential hazards could spell grievious setbacks. But this reason sounds the most plausibly precious.
I think this should be best if GH will add option to use both UIs and players can choose which one they would like to use(and yes, i know that the GH don't have currently plans with old UI and Cronus sayd). And ofcourse old one will be pretty outdated as Cronus sayd, but GH would update it from time to time.
I dont know how any of you guys havent post about this yet
