is the stun weakness and normal defense of grey feather worth it overall compared to the divine veils almost no drawbackness?
divine veil or grey feather cowl?
I think in teir three that divine veil will trump grey feather, especially in fiend and graveyard levels. However, I have no experience to corroborate this since I am currently trying to make my own.
I'm rather curious about this too, I was going to craft a Divine Veil specifically for the Shadow Defense for FSC. But if a lack of normal offsets that in the rest of T3 then maybe Grey Feather is a better option.
Getting stunned is terrible if you are running solo or just have one friend. (So, don't get hit, I guess?) I have the Grey Feather set but have never actually used it, if you can believe it. I've been preoccupied with leveling other pieces of gear... I think I would definitely utilize it in a shock strata. As an aside, I really prefer the look of the Grey Feather Cowl. Not nearly so many around and looks pretty awesome in every color I've seen. I don't think you'll have any regrets if you get the Cowl.
I'm currently making a Divine Veil and plan to pair it with Armor of the Fallen (with max normal UV) for running FSC. It's sort of an experiment. Not sure that I'd feel comfortable using the Veil if I didn't have the additional normal defense from the armor.
Vog for running FSC and most t3 gates
Divine veil/mantle for fiends/undead levels
The only thing vog has going for it is sword attack speed, besides this is about grey feather and divine veil.
Already got my grey feather recipe, now I just gotta level it up. :)
Thanks to all who followed up with input, I'm fairly excited about making this helm now, stun weakness really isn't much of a drawback compared to losing all that normal defense.
Grey Feather-Elemental and normal defense, high chance of getting stunned, fire and shock resist. No extra damage bonus.
Divine-Elemental Defense, Shadow Defense, Curse Resist, Shock Resist, AND Fire resist. Not to mention moderate damage VS fiends. Perfect for Gran faust users or any users period.
I think that you should get the mantle cuz I am not sure that there are even any monsters with curse. It is good if you want to defend yourself from the curse if you have Faust of Gran Faust, but I do not really like the Faust line anyways I am going for the Divine Avenger. Stun, as you have already said, is not really a big drawback compared to all those monsters with normal damage.
I made my grey feather cowl and have been wearing it constantly, while there does seem to be more frequent stuns (or maybe i just pay attention now) not sure if they're the same amount of time as before either. Long story short, the normal defense is worth it, I used a valk helm for a while and didn't really notice much damage difference against fiends, maybe 4-6%? (the numbers for bonuses are somewhere)
I think most people would agree that being geared up for Fire Storm Citadel is the primary purpose for tier 3 equipment. With that in mind, I will present my case for why Grey Feather gear is vastly superior to Divine gear.
There are 4 or 5 primary enemies in FSC (wolvers and jellies appear in such small numbers that they're essentially irrelevant). Those enemies, and their damage types are:
Slag Walker - Normal/Shadow
Gun Puppies - Elemental
Trojans - Normal
Oilers - Normal/Piercing
Vanaduke - Normal
Divine has four potential advantages over Grey Feather; Curse resistance, No stun weakness, Shadow Defense, and Fiend dmg bonus.
Curse resistance is pointless, because no enemies in FSC curse (and GF charge attack will still curse you, albeit for a shorter period).
Shadow def is pointless, because the only enemy that deals shadow damage also deals equal normal damage, so it's an even trade-off.
The stun and fiend advantage are moderately helpful for the trojans, but not worth the huge loss of defense against their pure normal attacks.
So, the only time that Divine gear gives you an advantage is against trojans, and even then it's offput by a big jump in their attack power. And for vanaduke himself, you'll be essentially naked without some normal def armor.
Thank you very much Diggidy, very informative and I feel even better about wearing grey feather hood in FSC now.
There is a similar thread in the general forum.
The point I made in that thread is you do not have to have a matching set, you can mix and match. Something like the divine veil, which provides elemental/shadow paired with something that has normal/pierce defense such as the skolver, justifier, royal jelly, virulisk or azure guardian, will give you have a well balanced set of armor with lots of nice resists. This isn't ideal for the FSC, since there isn't much there that will actually hit you with piercing or shadow, but or general T3 (or T2) runs, it works great.
Similarly, you can match up a piece of armor that does normal/elemental with the radiant silvermail which does piercing/shadow to get a well balanced set.
I would not go without any normal defense, anywhere, and getting UVs to provide more normal defense wouldn't be bad, but you don't need a matching set of armor and often mixed armor setups can be quite nice.
There's very little reason to get an even split of all four def types, given that the majority (all?) of attacks in t3 are either split normal, or pure elemental. The most logical defensive mix is normal/elemental + normal/optional.
The optional would depend on where you spend most of your time, between shadow, elemental and maaaaaybe piercing (I've found that piercing def doesn't seem to reduce damage as much as you'd expect, but perhaps that's just me).
Some people go with normal/shadow + normal/shadow in FSC, but I find the increased damage from fires and gun puppies too harmful.
[EDIT] Wait, maybe Phantom's charge attack is pure shadow? I can't recall.
I've been pondering this question myself while leveling the full Magic set. This was some good insight. I will build my Miracle gear into a full set of Grey Feather thanks to this thread. Appreciate it!
When your at vanaduke, stuff is falling from the ceiling without notice. Therefore, you probably won't have time to switch to your shield and will want stun resistance.
That's not accurate at all - the floor changes to orange where the ceiling falls down. It is really easy to dodge, or if the area is too large you have plenty of time to shield.
True, but you are more than likely FIGHTING YOUR LIFE AWAY.
It only falls after he smashes with his mace. Just watch for spots after he attacks and it's not that big a deal. I don't find the negative stun resist to be that hampering.
It dosnt matter if you have no normal damage as much because if you manage to dodge it will not matter as much i run fsc a lot and that too in a divne veil and vog the asi on vog helps with my voltedge and sivine veil helps me with that extra fire protect
divine veils draw back is that it has no normal defense and that is a huge draw back. I own a full set of divine and feather sets and the feather set is by far better. Almost all of the monsters you will encounter in the clockworks have more normal damage than elemental, so your def wont be of much use. I thought getting the divine would make me immune to alot of the damage in game, but I was wrong.
