OK, here's something that I just don't get. Both the Ascended Calibur and the Cold Iron Carver are the next step in the Calibur alchemy line. Originally, I thought they'd both have their strengths and weaknesses, but the Cold Iron Carver seems to be as strong as the Ascended Calibur in every way, except it also has a bonus against the undead. Is this really such a no braner as I think it is? I mean, they both have the same speed and damage listed, the attack patterns of both are just those of the Calibur and I can't compare numbers because the Wiki lacks damage numbers for the Cold Iron Carver.

Simply put, is there ANY reason to get the Ascended Calibur whatsoever?

The stat bars lie. The Cold

The stat bars lie. The Cold Iron Carver is inferior in every way, including the knockback on its charged attack.

I know this firsthand.

Don't get the Cold Iron Carver. :(

Not really. The pro and con

Not really. The pro and con is that you can get the Ascended Calibur recipe from Kozma, but you have to get the Iron Carver from Basil. The problem is that Basil rarely has 4* on tier 2 (floor 13) and since you usually don't have all 4* you can't go to tier 3 (floor 21 I think) to get it. So the only problem is convenience really.

Oh no, not THIS THREAD

Oh no, not THIS THREAD agaiiiiiiiiin...

You know there's a search feature in the forums, right? And damage tables on the wiki, right?

To answer, yes it's a no-brainer, but not in the direction you think it is!!!

Woah really? That's pretty lame, I was banking on that it was better. What are the damages?

And the significantly lower damage on the Carver.

And the poor knockback on the Carver's charged attack, leaving enemies still in range for retaliation.

And the fact that the Carver's materials are more expensive and harder to find.

The Undead damage bonus only brings its damage comparable to the Asended Calibur, not far above like it was probably meant to be.

There is no reason to ever get the Carver unless you really absolutely must have its admittedly cool-looking final upgraded form.

"You know there's a search feature in the forums, right? And damage tables on the wiki, right?"

I'm aware of the search feature. It didn't return anything which looked like an answer to that question. Mostly people willing to buy or sell a Cold Iron Carver recipe. As for damage tables on the Wiki, I suspect you stopped reading my post at the title, since I looked for those. They don't exist for the Cold Iron Carver, and while the Cold Iron Vanquisher does have damage tables listed, almost all numbers in them are half question marks, such as 33 - ? or ? - 47, making me doubt the validity of the whole table.

---

That aside, thank you (everyone else) for your answers. I wasn't aware that the damage bars lied, but I'll keep that in mind for the future. Is there some way to check weapon damage or armour protection numbers for items that the Wiki has no numbers for? I hate to work blind like this.

And, finally, I'll need to inform the person who brought up the Cold Iron Carver to me initially, and I need to inform him that the Carver is weaker than the Calibur, apparently significantly. He, like me, was under the impression that they were equal in power but the Carver came with extra benefits besides. He'll be disappointed, I'm sure, but he'll be more disappointed if he finds out after he makes the thing.

Yeah, I looked at the damage

Yeah, I looked at the damage tables again and you're right, the carver is lame. Thanks for the info, I've been holding out for the carver this whole time. Kozma here I come!

Eh, I don't know. The Wiki did have a pic of the final form, and I don't dig the chain too much. I like simpler designs for gear (which is why I'm still using my Proto kit in the costume slots), and the final Calibur is just the right balance of stylised simplicity and heavy chunk of metal :)

@Fazan: No, no, that's not

@Fazan: No, no, that's not it. The Cold Iron Carver is a rusty, notched stick that evolves into a brilliant, largely ornamental weapon with chains wrapped around it, made for the purpose of fighting evil.

It's the Sword of Mana! Except... wimpy. (The actual Sword of Mana hasn't even been wielded as a weapon since Secret of Mana in 1994... so I guess it's true to the reference material.)

Well, it didn't occur to me

Well, it didn't occur to me to search for "Leviathan," since I was looking for information on the Ascended Calibur, not the Leviathan Blade. In retrospect, I probably should have thought to search for that, too, but there's still a difference between "do a search" and "do a search for THIS." A lot of the time when you have people asking repeated questions, that's the reason - "What do I search for?"

I have personally been in the Cold Iron set for a while now, right now I am at Vanquisher. There is a slight damage drop off but not much, they are very useful in undead situations. Go with what you want. I find the sword great for the levels leading up to Vanaduke, plus it looks pretty BA with the chains and swirling rings around it.
