Owlite's ugly until 5*, but
Owlite's ugly until 5*, but it's got defenses against the two most common damage types and resistances against the two most hated status effects. And the 5* version looks pretty sweet.
Plate's overly focused on Normal defenses but has very strong knockback when shield-shoving (I can throw Lumbers aside with the 4* one). It USED TO be the only shield that could withstand repeated hits from a Lumber, but... that was before Lumbers started dealing split-Elemental damage. Haven't tested it since then.

I think the 5* is pretty ugly too, way too bright for my tastes. :)
Went down to D19 to see how each stands up to gun puppies and lumbers, here is what I found:
Grey Owlite Shield - UV Normal Low
- Lumber broke on 2nd hit
- Gun Puppy 15 hits to break. Needed two in order to even break it since it regens faster than one D19 gun puppy can break it.
Volcanic Plate Shield - UV Normal High
- Lumber broke on 3rd hit
- Gun Puppy 12 hits to break. Again, needed two in order to even break it since it regens faster than one D19 gun puppy can break it.
The gun puppies were tested before yesterday's patch buffing T3 Gun Puppy statuses. Regardless, the gun puppies used in testing were status-neutral.
I'd be curious if the VPS will still break on three hits without a UV (or perhaps with an elemental UV instead.)

I recommend VPS in FSC and anywhere else that a Owlite isn't needed.

i would go for plate shield , I dislike the owlite shield (dont ask why)
