is there any pros or cons to letting the lichens fuse together into a larger one, or should you kill them individually? i know they level up to a higher monster when enough fuse, but are the heat/crowns/drops also fusing into the one, or are you possibly losing things from killing them individually? are there better drops from the powered up versions?
lichen fusion
If you let them fuse into the very dark red variation that can send shards out or up through the ground then you get phat loots (really nice loot). If you let them form into a translucent orange glowing blob that can only fling shards around then your chances of getting any loot is minimal, though they may have fixed this issue.
My friends and I always get em to fuse as much as possible. We try to push them at each other with our shields. IDK if the drop rate is necessarily better, but I know the larger the lich, the larger the hearts it may drop. And it could just be us but its easier to focus on one enemy than 4-5 others. A well aimed poison or curse vial will the make fighting fused lich much quicker than you think.
I keep them apart. The big drop of hearts is nice, but you don't need it if you don't let them fuse in the first place. I don't mind the medium lichens (And... can we call them lichens? I can't help but think of the undead when you say lich!)
If you take them out while they are small with good shield and knockback-attack work, you won't take much damage or use any vials and can save your supplies for arenas, danger rooms, or jelly kings. (Although now that I'm using an alchemer again instead of the autogun, taking out the big guys isn't so bad, just slow. Unless lag is stopping me from shielding in time.)
The loot drops -ought- to be exactly the same IMO, especially if you're going to have an in-game encouragement to pursue a divide-and-conquer strategy, but, of course, when you kill twelve little lichens there's a tendency to pick everything up as you go that makes it hard to count up afterwards, so I don't know if what I think ought to be and what is are the same.
thats my bad for referring to them as "lich" --couldnt remember what the game called them, i knew id heard both names and did have a mental association with the undead lol.
im not having trouble killing these guys by any means, i meant the question from a standpoint of which is more profitable. the bigger ones didnt SEEM to drop more crowns / heat than the individual lichen wouldve scored me, but I wasnt sure if I was right or wrong about that
You can fight them however you want. Keeping them apart is generally deemed easier. What determines how much they drop is how many nuclei there are in the center of them. If there is one, there will be no drops. The more nuclei, the more drops. Say you have two of the smallest lichen in a room, both with one nuclei. Normally you would get zero loot for killing each of them separate. If you let them form, there's a chance it will have two nuclei, and therefor giving you loot.
Fused lichen drop more loot than they would seperately.
Lichen Colonies will drop extra loot, but only if their nucleus is a cluster, not small. Otherwise, it drops no loot.
Gigantic Lichen Colonies are deadly (for not me) and drop a huge wad of loot. Once its nucleus is a cluster, though, avoid letting anymore fuse with it, as you won't get loot from those lichen.
Over fusing can be a double edged sword.
Didn't they fix the no-loot bug with the last release? I could have sworn I've killed single-core lichen colonies since then and gotten loot...
It's not a bug.
If it's not a cluster inside of an evolved lichen, it won't drop loot.
That you know how to reproduce the bug doesn't mean it's the intended behavior.
This has been fixed in the past, and will probably be fixed again. Dunno why it resurfaces every few releases.
get on SK and lets get on a Lichen level..actually im in one now.... add me kingfuru
That was my favorite strata ever... now its gone.. Anyways, I did the strata many times because it was all slime. Lichen levels + Jelly Farm + Random floor (2 Lichenous Lairs, Treasure Vault, or Graveyard). Whenever I faced the Lichen I pushed them together so they'd fuse. Its a lot of fun and you can conentrate on only 1 enemy, but one time it ended up not dropping anything at all! No hearts, heat, materials, or crowns. It also took out 5 bars of HP on me with its thorn launch spam. But most of the time it dropped a lot of crowns/ a lot of heat and many hearts so it isn't a huge deal.
Pros: Can drop a lot of crowns for you, heat for your weapons, and hearts for your health.
Cons: May not drop anything at all and can take out much of your health. (ALTHOUGH NOT VERY LIKELY)
It's best to call them lichens because the name is a real word that isn't pronounced like how most people expect.

There are many times when you don't want them to fuse. A newly fused lichen will have full health even if the lichens that were fused took a lot of damage. A fully grown lichen colony can be deadly if you also have to deal with other monsters at the same time. They are a real pain to deal with in a danger room because they are very aggressive, have a lot of health, and can take up a lot of the safe floor space. The spike attacks are really dangerous if you are trying to clear out the smaller monsters first.

And this is me as I charge headlong into a trio of truly terrifying titans of tendril-tunneling treachery.
God I love Lichens. n_n
It should also be mentioned that when a small lichen morphs with a bigger cluster, the new form of lichen produced has their health reset to the maximum.
It's annoying in Danger Rooms and Arenas, and sometimes deadly if your team is neither prepared or understands it.
Edit: And then Velops says what I just said and now I feel silly.
You guys also forgot to mention, danger rooms consider fused lichens to have been "defeated" and will spawn new enemies if the only enemies left are fused lichens.
As far as I know it's the same, and the yellow "!" icon at the beginning of most lich levels instructs you to fight them separately. Also, i'm pretty sure there have to be a certain number of lichs fused before the larger mob will even drop anything. There have been plenty of times where only 2 or 3 will fuse and the mob they turn into doesnt actually drop anything. The reallly large ones usually have good drops in terms of heat/crowns though
