Got lucky and made it work.
This program Rocks!!
> I have copied the file into the correct folder, but the file will only open as an archive, I'm not sure what program I'm supposed to be using to open the viewer, could someone give me a hint....?
Thats a well known problem with WinRAR/Winzip. Java JAR files are essentially ZIP files and for some reason, those two programs insist that they should be the ones to handle them. Easiest fix is to reinstall Java.
> I've sent Spiral-Spy an in game mail so hopefully I'll be able to get an answer from the horses mouth so to speak =)
Likely not. That knight is on a separate account which has no money. Its sole reason for existence is because the forum requires it. I normally don't log it in to check mail (especially not since my website has a working contact form, which is linked from the spiralspy page). I prefer to provide support publicly through this forum, though.
Is there a way to check how many frames an animation runs for from start to finish? For example, I want a gif of my character sleeping and I want it to loop seemlessly the way it does in the game, so I need to know exactly how many frames the emote runs for. Thanks
Edit: Nvm, I worked it out
'salright. Had to speed up the wolver tail wagging animation a bit to loop it with the sleeping animation
Thanks for this program, its a lot of fun to mess around in. I've been creating a few scenes by manipulating the placement and direction of environmental objects. For example a portrait of the alpha squad:
One question tho, I watched Negamasonic's instructional video and I found that I had only half that number of animations that he had. For example, no run, death or reaction animations. Does anyone know if this is a glitch or are they too unable to use these animations. Also, has anyone managed to use multiple models at the same time? Its a bit annoying having to save knights and environmental props.
I hate to further bother you about this. It might be my problem, so sorry if you can't explain this.
I've gone into the library, but there is no folder of Spiral Knights.
I do however see a folder named "spiral" in lowercase, while everything else there is labeled in uppercase, with it's full name.
Thinking this is what you meant, I simply drop the spiralspy.jar into there. I click on it, but nothing happens.
I mean, the app doesn't even launch. I am on a older mac version, if that means anything. (On a 07 mac, with snow leopard.)
Sorry to be a nag, but this program seems way too awesome to miss out on! Maybe someone using a mac could guide me on this?
Or is this simply a problem that nobody else has with their system? Sorry for bothering, and thanks!
So today I finally got this thing to work properly...
I made this
How long did this take? Far too long.
awww...she's got a stalker :-)
Well done Mejezfeld!
So I decided to check the forums upon hearing new end game content being released.
Well the rage threads said it all.
My long 3 month wait was for naught.
But then I came upon this thread.
This is golden!
Maybe it's my comp..
I don't use macs so I don't know what to tell you, but I'm going to assume some obvious files should be the same.
Search your entire system for
"background.pngv" or "projectx.log"
wherever that is, drop spiralspy in that same folder.
when i try to open spiralspy nothing happens ._.
Allrighty, I'm going to try this again. Can anyone post a spesific address to put this in? I use a PC, if that helps.
Lol, Negima, those files are in the "spiral" folder. I decided to give it another shot, with a new downloaded spiralspy, and it works!
Wooohoo! Thanks Negima, lol. Disregard my posts earlier, it is working now.
lol alls well that ends well. Now let's find a way to turn these .dat files into models we can animate with 3d software...isaidnothing.
First pic. How do you get other people and/or monsters and a background and ground into the pic? :P
Took like half a hour though. Hopefully I will get faster.
I ask because, when I play any animations that usually have sounds included, it says at the bottom of the screen it failed to load a .ogg sound.
Like when I play hurt_soft, this appears:
Failed to load [key=com.threerings.openal.ResourceClipProvider@28ebb4:sound/effect/player/player_damage.ogg].
EDIT: Also, does anyone happen to know where the models for the gourdlings & the punkin king is? I can't seem to find them.
Since a few people are having trouble/asking for it, here's the install locations that I know of.
Web Client, Windows 7: \Users\[Your current account]\AppData\LocalLow\spiral
Web Client, XP/others: \Documents and Settings\[Your current account]\Application Data\spiral
Downloaded installer: \Program Files[(x86)]\Three Rings Design\Spiral Knights
Steam: \Steam\Steamapps\common\Spiral Knights
Mac: I have never used a Mac, but a quick Google search says that you should look for either /Applications/Spiral Knights or /Applications/Three Rings Design/Spiral Knights. Someone with a Mac post the correct location for this.
Maybe an edit to the opening post is in order?
@Mejezfeld Got a good laugh out of that, they both look real nice. Also, more things could use some Highlander.
sorry if this has already been mentioned but is there a way to "save" your configurations? I tried something with the configs under Edit and all that did was break the program :s, also is there a way to view your characters attack animation?
@Lostillusion If you're using Steam on a mac, it's in ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/spiral knights
Sorry if somebody's already answered a problem like this but I couldn't find it anywhere in the thread. I downloaded the file (7,545 KB Executable Jar File) and put it into the Spiral Knights directory (Program Files, Three Rings Design, Spiral Knights), tried double clicking it, right click open and the command line to get it to run but it does absolutely nothing. I thought it might be incomplete but Chrome says the whole thing was downloaded. Any advice?
I feel like such a noob posting this :P
Same thing happened to me Voidreaper, what I did was I redownloaded the jar, and put it back in the spiral knights directory, and poof!
It works for me now. Make sure to get the old one out of there.
Dunno if this actually always works or not, worked for me though.
For some reason it decided to obey and now it works fine O.o Lol the combinations can be completely ridiculous and downright AWESOME. Try Vog Armour, Vog Helm with Volcanic Halo and Volcanic Wolver Tail. And that other Aura that I'm not sure I'm allowed to mention. I swear if I somehow get those items I will trade my left kidney to aquire that set because HOLY DAMN IT'S EPIC!!!!!
Ok, does anyone know how to get this to work for Mac users? As far as I can see there is no Spiral Knights directory in my finder, only the launcher. Also, I just recently converted to steam, am I double screwed being a steam user and a Mac user?
So where do I go for that steam directory? It's not in my finder and the only thing I come up with when I search spiral knights is the launcher and some of my screenshots.
Do I need to do something in steam?
I can't help more than that, I don't use macs. Perhaps someone with a mac should make a shortcut and upload it to somewhere like mediafire.
@Quiiliitiila Go to the finder, hit cmd-shift-g and paste in the path I listed above.
[No spoilers, please.]
Seeing as there aren't a lot of pictures dedicated towards gunners I decided to try my hands at coming up with one of my own which I shamelessly used my own character as the main subject :P
Considering how I only seriously started using Spiral Spy today, how much could I possibly do?
It's not done, but geez :D, when I have time maybe I'll explain how I did all this.
I must say the lack of a 'save' feature is really a downer for this program though, anyone figure out a way to store configurations?
I am a happy customer.
Also, that is pretty darn awesome, Happy. I have no idea of how to create poses, or do anything productive at all with it, really. You should make a video guide or something, that'd be smooth.
Near disaster, program crashed and with the complete lack of a save feature I thought I lost everything (since I started working on that scene I haven't turned off my computer :s ), turn out the Environment models are saved (walls, floor, props, etc) and all I lost was the player model which is a lot easier to remake, felt my stomach fall out for a second there.
Expect to see something soon in the Treasure Vault with some instructions to boot :)
I love this program, but why can't I find the accessories? I feel like it's not giving me the options from the latest updates.
Edit: I figured it out. Had to re-download the game and then reboot.
Please provide more specific feedback. Saying it doesn't work when you try to open it isn't specific enough. Tell us what you are doing, is it in the right directory, do you have Java as the default opening program? Etc.
if "model-recolor.dat" is the primatic colors which are
> magenta . lavender . crimson . lake . red . vermillion . orange . amber
does that mean if i get prismatic long feather or prismatic wings i can choose the color ?
if that's the case i'm after 2 of both items to covert to magenta and red :)
I don't think you get to choose the color, its automatically set the color of your character.
Speaking of Spiral Spy, I just whipped this scene up in about an hour:
IN YOUR FACE VARA!!
Don't you wish you could actually do this in game :P
I posted 2 other scenes I made here
Please comment on these, I would realllllly like some feedback, or better yet, suggestions for future scenes
haha, I love that, I can imagine a totally overdone Final Fantasy VII AC styled battle with Vana and the finishing move is a nitro to the face..
Puh, been lazing the last couple of days (well, actually not lazing, but being busy with real life).
"when i try to open spiralspy nothing happens ._."
"Nothing" is really not a lot to go by. The very least that should happen is a dialog popping up, telling you that you have dropped SpiralSpy into the wrong folder. Try reinstalling Java, if that does not help, try opening a commandline in the SpiralKnights folder and type the following:
java -jar spiralspy-1.0.jar
"Please comment on these, I would realllllly like some feedback, or better yet, suggestions for future scenes"
Love it :). Can you make it wallpaper sized :)?
Speaking of wallpapers. I have been busy on setting up a website on it's own for SpiralSpy. It's pretty much a hackjob right now and I need some help, filling it with content. It's intended to be a download location for SpiralSpy (and other SK related apps, I might add in the future), collection of fanart (I so hope for some desktop sized wallpapers) and maybe guides. I'll just post the link here and hope for feedback:
Help is appreciated, just contact me, if you want to help working on this website.
PS: Happyapathy, saw your Thread in the Treasure Vault (*thumbs*). There actually is a way to avoid loosing your previous work when starting a new scene (though not directly in SS): The modelviewer uses the Java Preferences API for storing it's settings between session. You can use regedit like tools to import/export these preferences. Try:
I'll try to build something like this directly into SS when I find the time for it.
All those screenshots I took were just shots of my computer screen, I can't expand it to the size of my entire screen unfortunately.
I sadly actually know very little about java and really don't understand what it says there :(. I'll just continue what I've been doing for now and see what you come up with. If you gave me a step-by-step guide on how to use javapref I could try it.
Here are some things that would be helpful to have in the future:
- Able to rename Environment Models:
It gets hard to keep track of things when they are all named things like Environment Models (53), Environment Models (54), Environment Models (55)... and so on
- Able to quickly duplicate previously made Environment Models:
Laying down floor tiling and walls SUCKS, every single tile/wall I have to punch in the XYZ coordinates, resize, rotate, and choose the model for, a sort of "copy and paste" function would really speed things up
- Better animation control
I notice if you place a character model (model_level.dat) as an Environment Model it lacks the Animations list you see at the bottom in the main screen, having that plus the speed control would help a lot in creating scenes with multiple characters in it
still for some sort of export that's usable by external 3d applications, they said their artists use 3dsmax but this program just wants to export .dat or .xml
Almost any other format would be nice, .blend, .obj, .3ds...
i think the .dat may be a way to prevent people from "stealing" models much like encryption, but thats just my take, I don't know enough about it to be sure.
P.S. Want to give me a screenshot of your character Negimasonic? :P
Tried your SpiralSpy program and loved it. I now know what accessories I'm gonna go after. though a question did rear it's ugly head. But I don't think this is the thread for it.
@Happyapathy, yeah I'm sure that's a part of it, I think other games had some method though, I had looked into something related to Final Fantasy XI and Lego somethings. But couldn't figure it out.
Still, the program itself is way helpful if I really wanted to try modeling a character from it since I can take screenshots and use them as reference images (not in the arms stretched out pose I'd like, but it would work). Unfortunately, I'm just too lazy to try and I haven't worked with bodies in awhile.
Ahem, don't have a screenshot handy right now, I'll look for one later perhaps. I'm just standard full blue character groundbreaker though. Well now I have a punkin bandolier on it but that's all haha..
"i think the .dat may be a way to prevent people from "stealing" models much like encryption, but thats just my take, I don't know enough about it to be sure. "
Nope, Clyde provides converters between XML and DAT files. The point of .DAT is rather to bypass the overhead that comes with XML and to cut down on file size (we are talking factor 10 here).
"though a question did rear it's ugly head. But I don't think this is the thread for it."
Feel free to ask ugly questions here: http://spiral.onyxbits.de/contact
I've been enjoying playing around with this quite a bit. Is there any way to export creations or files into a 3D modeling program or are they stuck with their .dat extension?
as i said, it would be bad business for OOO if people could take their models and reuse them for own needs, still think the .dat format is partly there to prevent people from essentially 'pirating' SK models to use for own games/programs, and I don't blame them as game developers for doing this.
