Party vote for kicking players

Occasionally, there are terrible party leaders in pickup groups. You know the type; the ones that might refuse to get on the elevator if not put on someone's energy tab, the ones that boot everyone from the party in a rage if they're not revived within ten seconds while a 20-mecha knight pile is milling around on top of them, or the ones that AFK while an arena level is next. I'd like to suggest removing full control over who gets kicked from the party leader, and providing at least some way for normal party members to have their say in party-related maters.

And so, I recommend the following for any parties with three or more players:

Kicking out a normal party member
This must be initialized by the leader; party members can only give suggestions. All party members that are not the target of removal receive a non-intrusive notification (like trade icons during a dungeon run) about the decision, and have the option to agree or disagree. A single approval from another party member is sufficient for the kick.

Kicking the leader
This is done by silent vote; no single player is aware of another player's decision unless the voting player chooses to make it known to the rest of the party. No notifications are given to either the leader or other party members, allowing them to vote without harassment by the leader. An additional option is added to the leader's energy tab drop-down menu with the option "vote out of party", which is toggle-able. If all non-leader players have chosen to vote the leader out, then the leader is kicked and the next person in the party gets the leadership position.

What I propose keeps the leader in a unique position of power, as he/she is still the only person who can make the final decision to kick a non-leader party member. However, this allows party members a chance to veto the decisions of a corrupt leader, as well as a chance to replace said leader. The decisions of party members is generally anonymous, so that anyone who is kicked can't send abusive messages to the voters. Overall, I believe this should compel party leaders to make their decisions for the benefit of the party as a whole, rather than to extort something from other party members.

Terrible Party goes both ways, sadly.

If you get picked up in a pick-up party, and find that your leader is a royal idiot and his friend is one of the other party members . . . well, you're stuck with either leaving or suffering through them even if this system gets put into play, as opposed to

Or if you get a batch of Freaking Noobs (or Freaking Trolls) that all vote you out . . . RIGHT at the end of an Arena you managed to slog them through. That's not going to sit too well with the Unlucky Victim either.

As NICE as this system sounds, it's still not really the Golden Solution that you're probably looking for, I don't think. : /

A Silver Solution

I don't think we'd ever get a golden solution without someone babysitting all the parties, and that's certainly out of the question.

The first point had crossed my mind, but it's still an advantage over the system in place at the moment - if it was just the one person, then the party members would still have some control. And I'd like to believe that the community is reasonable enough not to friend a royal pants-on-head idiot in the first place, or at least be less inclined to friend one so that the problem is less of an issue.

As far as a party of trolls goes... I've heard of cases where people have been invited down to floors to help revive someone, and got kicked immediately afterward, so I suppose it's not entirely impossible for this to be the case. However, it's more likely for someone to encounter a leader that would do something like that than to encounter an entire party that would kick a competent leader. If we arbitrarily assume that 1 out of every 20 members of the Spiral Knights community is a huge troll - a very generous estimate - and that every single one chooses to join parties instead of start them, then you have a (1/20) * (1/20) = 1/400 chance to encounter a three-person party that will vote you off. And a four-person party? 1/8000 chance, effectively negligible.

Now, let's port that possibility to the current system. Let's assume that only 5% of griefers choose to become party leaders. This gives you a (1/20) * (1/20) = 1/400 chance to encounter a troll leader that can kick you in the current system. The probability here matches that of meeting a three-person party that will kick you in the new system, assuming full troll population in party members. However, keep in mind that this is a best-case scenario, where only a small portion of trolls are active in party leading and kicking, whereas the other is a worst-case scenario, where 100% of trolls - 20 times as many as in this example - are in parties trying to kick people.

Noobs in general, I'd say, would be less inclined to vote a great player off because they'll feel safer having a high-level gamer helping them through the dungeon. More experienced players may be more likely to vote off a poor player, but in that event, it's less of having carried the party through the arena than having the party carry you through it.

how about voting to change

how about voting to change leaders? if its 3v1 vote to change the leader, thats probably a decent indicator the leader should be changed. however, an easier way is to prevent heat loss when going solo. if any kinds of problems arise, i would vanish in an instant if i didnt lose heat.

personally i always choose to be party leader because i have encountered these kinds of scenarios - where people just leave you dead, kick you, or do any number of douchebag moves. when i join random parties, i also immediately go solo. it avoids a lot of these scenarios, though lately i only run with friends to avoid the whole situation, or run solo.
