Crazy Idea. Tell me what you think. Topic: Naming of weapons

Ok. I just remembered part of a description I read about a sword once, I think it was the Calibur, I can't remember. (it was the Ascended Calibur guys)
Anyway, it was from that residual memory that I got this idea....
Why don't we have the option to name our weapons?
Hear me out. The description said something about knights naming their blades because they got really attached to them.
Also, some people have more of the same weapon, right? To follow split paths as well, right? Or just because of the UVs attached to them or whatever.
SO. By naming their weapons, people wouldn't have the problem of choosing the wrong weapon, whether it be for use, or upgrading or something.
I know at least one player who even held a small competition to come up for a name for her prized Nightblade upgrade.
Wth, I just think it'd be nice.
How it'll work:
Crafting a weapon gives you the option of naming the weapon immediately after it's crated. After that, the name is bound to the weapon, and you'll have to pay to get rid of/change the name.
A bought weapon will have to be paid for it's name to change.
Both paths will get to rename the weapon when it's upgraded.
E.g:
Calibur called Mark -> Tempered Calibur called Mark II (Option to change the name when upgrading. No extra charge.)
Calibur Called Mark -> Calibur called Bob (Name change must be bought.)
Bought Calibur -> Calibur called Iwasbought (Name change must be bought)
Crafted Calibur (Can name it when crafted.)
Name is lost on Unbind. No unbound weapon will have a name.
Views?

It's more of a personal reference thing. I't not like you'd inspect someone, and see that they have a Thwack Hammer they call Bob. The Name is for your eyes only, and is just to allow you to keep track of which is which, and more uniqueness of your own equipment.
And maybe the first name is free, but changing it would cost, idk what price to set. First name being when the weapon is made, as like a 'You now have this weapon, would you like to give it a nickname?' Then the Item was moved to arsenal.
Kinda how like how they do it in Pokemon.
Plus, if the guy names it something stupid, violating the TOS, and others CAN see it if thats how they make it, then we can just report them to the GMs or something.
But I agree, there are plenty of immature people who abuse name giving privileges. I heard of this guy in Pokemon who named his Metapod, well, something I would rather not say, sot that when it went into battle he would use harden, and it would end up as "[Vulgar word] Used harden!"
You guess what they named it. ><

I love this idea personally.
I've actually already unoficially named my Blizzbrand (Oblizzerator) and my Jalovec (Gigantic Uber Sword :D)
I do think the innapropriateness problem is solved by it being personal only, since the chat filter is easy to get around.
You know, I see people dropping the F bomb by just putting spaces between the letters.

Let's name weapons we craft, if we buy it, we can't name it and we wil open to the vulgarity of sellers! :D
I'll rage craft blast bomb and sell them under the name StopusingMe Bomb

I'd dearly love to see this implemented, as an owners-eyes-only thing; it's a neat little personalisation touch, it helps players with duplicate items keep their stuff in order, and yeah, even a potential Crown-sink. No reason for other players to see the names - they could even be automatically removed on selling or trading an item, removing the need to filter them.

I simply have to +1 this for the sake of my Gin-Me Kureimoa! (Kamarin ;)

I actuualy thought of this not long ago. +1. Not super important, but post-worthy. Should only apply to bound items, dunno why. Gut idea.

I vote for it to be a 'User-eyes-only' thing, so it's removed when you sell it.
I also think you can change the name everytime you use it in alchemy, so lets say a Calibur you named Rex, then you upgrade it to Tempered Calibur, and a Prompt comes up saying if you want to rename it.
And the First naming option comes up when you craft the weapon. Better incentive to craft your gear instead of just buying it off AH.
Then if you want to change the name (not counting alchemy), you have to pay a fee. Any ideas on the cost?

Why do post always end at me?! ^_-
Srsly, I post, and it seems like everyones like: 'oh gee, Psycho posted. Note to self, don't read his posts and watch him rage about it :D.'
Or something><
Bt srsly, it always ends at me. Or something.

ANy other comments? Like it? Hate it? Wth, I won't use but put it in anyway?
Come on!

I like the idea of naming your weapons +1. It gives it a sentimental value and for the price of renaming it i guess it would be somewhere around 25-50energy since naming wont have any effect on it( except for sentimental purposes :3 ).
and if I were to name my weapons my Combuster would be called Pyrosaber :D.

"Cool idea :D I'd so name my Triglav: The Bansword"
the wrench wand is the REAL banhammer (+1)

This would be awesome if it showed up in the crafting interface too, so I could name all my T2 PVP gear as "FOR THE LOVE OF ALL *&^$*%&^ DON'T CRAFT WITH THIS"

I just got this idea a couple days ago, but thought it would be dumb, since ideas that I post on here are generally negative feedback. But I would SO use a weapon-naming mechanism in the game. My Cutter would be called Final Cutter in honor of Kirby's Final Cutter in SSB.
Also, why not Shields too? Shields can have names as well... :D
Note: If I EVER get a really strong gun, I'm gonna name it Dr Octagonapus

I personally love this idea. I have actually already named my Flourish Wolvesbane, due to its power over beasts.
But still, good idea. I just hope some GM's see this and add it.

OTHER people posting here. I don't just post things so I can see my name you know ^_-
Keep it coming!

I'll name a jelly set Snarby Armor and try to sell it for 30k ce.
Then I will name my Vog set and weapons Proto Gear to be able to say I beated Vana using proto-only.

Just have to Laugh and agree with Sonicfanlol... >u<

I actually thought about this myself a long time ago. There's a similar feature in the game I played prior to this called Dead Frontier.
Honestly, I don't think it'd be that hard for them to have an automatic list of names that aren't allowed. Obviously people will be clever, but no more so than existing knight names. I, however, do think the names should be visible under inspect (given the above is true). And the names should be only changable by the original namer [taking a cue from Pokemon here]. Why? Because everyone has a friend or a legend they know, and eventually such players move on, but what if they named their weapons before giving them away? Someone else could carry on their "legacy".
And to protect against fakes while allowing people to have the same name for their swords. Whoever named a sword, it should display somewhere their name.
Leviathan Blade
"Someknight's Powerful Slasha"
I'll leave it to the art team to figure out the acceptable name length limits.
This probably does need to be something that has a high cost though, to encourage people to sell CE for it or alternatively to keep people from mass naming useless items. So probably a price similar to Punch is fair. 10k[half the cost of a UV]. Yes, that's rather steep for a simple name, but I think that's acceptable. It honestly could be higher...
I also agree. I'd like to name my Silver Six "Python" as a reference to the real-life revolver. Then I could be a cowboy :D

...I always wanted to name my upcoming Gran Faust "Nightmare's Edge."
Having a feature like this is what keeps the vets playing and adds our own little style to the game.
I would probably rename a lot of weapons if it came around to it >.>

@Helencroft
In Team Fortress 2, people can name their items, and compared to the community, the names are extraordinarily tame. They're more like, "Killing Machine," or "If You See This, You're Dead" than any vulgar language. And I don't think there's a filter for it.

all i know is i think its a gr8 idea.
btw,picture this:
male knight asks female knight to trade
he puts a sword on the trading slot.
she puts her mouse on it.
its called ''will you marry me''.
LOL
''can i keep the sword''?
''no''.
or maybe a weapon called pokeball.
'' i threw my pokeball at snarbolax, but it killed him instead''

love the idea. I have some comments on the idea as well
1: I like the idea of naming while crafting it, but, i also feel there should be a way to change it after. Take people that already have 5* weapons, they would not be able to name the weapon if you had to craft to name.
2: There should be a set (bad) word list, that will nullify the name. Also, to teach people a lesson, it will count as a naming of the weapon. Taking the naming chance, or fee should there be another way. Obviously, this will prevent/discourage offensive/inappropriate naming of weapons. If your naming a weapon with an inappropriate word, you probably know it.
3: Because of above, this would allow weapon names to be seen by inspecting other players (full inspect would be needed)

I like the idea, but as already pointed out, you can see racist / sexist / unappropiate names coming from a mile away. and of course modeators don't have time to inspect everyone's belongings..

I would love SO sooo much to name my Thwack Hammer "The Practical Applicable."
Not that it is either practical NOR applicable in the majority of the in-game situations I'll be in BUT IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS.
Support on my part!

So then this idea has support from a few knights, Mewkats, 2 mecha knights, a Monster box, a shield, a gremlin, some ghosts (no avatars), some frost-zombie thingies and most importantly of all, a SNIPE.
Well, looks like almost half the clockworks are here :D
OOO/SEGA have any feedback on this? Any at all? Not even a 'Don't waste my time'?
No? Cool.
Is it politically incorrect for me to support my own thread? ^_- ?
I think that is the best idea anyone have just said. It can give us the ability make up cool names so make people jealous. I wonder what would happen if there was a contest for best weapon names.

Weapons need names, else all of our DA swords and LEV blades and.... Of course, you can only choose a name just before it is bound. How about, you now have a weapon! Would you like to give it a name? There could be a ridiculously overpriced vender for it, making you pay zillions of CE/Crowns if you choose badly... All the joys of haven. And if it is unbound, then the name disappears. That could (partially) explain why it costs soooo much.

When TF2 first allowed the 'Name Tag', the reaction was rather humorous. It started with all of the kids who could buy the tags with their parent's money renaming their items to stupid things.
The first few names noticed were either vulgar words, or rage-inducing, or highly-repeated meme phrases. But, as time progressed, the number of such disagreeable names, and scam-names (TF2 update, warns people when an item's name has been changed from its original) decreased.
Now, common named items are mixtures of slightly-original-and-humorous (Example: The Soldier's 'Black Box' rocket launcher -> 'The African American Box') / mildly-rage-inducing names. (Example: Boom! Headshot!)
There may still be some vulgar names, but their number eventually decreased after the novelty of naming wore off. (Example: The Scout's milk bottle getting renamed to a certain other liquid of a similar colour)
I think the same would happen here: People enjoy the novelty of names, creating rude/stupid names, and then the novelty wears off, and everything come out for the better.
+1 from the TF2 Community, I think, and +1 from myself.

Just found that description. Ascended Calibur:
"Made of a rare alloy of sun silver, knights talented enough to possess Caliburs as fine as this one typically bond with and NAME THEIR BLADES."

>Assuming that they won't input a censor for that
How stupid do you think OOO is?

I knew I read it somewhere...
STILL WANT! :D

/necro
Kinda goin' down the Dungeon Defenders route; max off your weapon/armour/whatever and get the choice to either leave it as it is or give it a personal name.
Would be a nice touch; lets people around you get to inspect your gear and really see more than just gear/UVs, they get a bit of insight, too.
Obviously there would need to be a filter or sorts since it'd be a cheeky way to bypass chat filters, but the idea's there.
The question would be:
Unbinding: remove the name, and let others rename the gear you crafted, or have it named permanently from you?

My Argent Peacemaker is totally going to be named Colt 45, and my Final Flourish would be named Lycanbane... [/fantasy]
I believe that's a +1.
@Darkbrady: I believe the item should only be available to be named, and retain its name, while bound. Once unbound, or before it's bound, you wouldn't be able to name it/it wouldn't retain its name. While upgrading an already-bound item, you would be able to rename it. How does that sound?
~Sev

If you call it Colt 45, both of your other weapons have to be called "Zig Zag", with no 4th weapon! :D
Ahh, I was still thinkin' along the Dungeon Defenders route, where somethin' can only be named once it's maxed (in this case, +10 at *cap). Although I'd understand things being renameable upon un/rebinding, it also loses that sense of craftsmanship; you craft it to max, name it then someone else gets it and can just rename it whatever they want? Naww, has to be locked!
However, if it'd just be a case of naming it whenever you felt like, then upon un/rebinding it should be renamable fo sho. Just depends on what the limitations would be.

Apparently "@Darkbrady:" has never been my Subject before..it usually comes up in the History.
On-topic: [Doesn't know what Dungeon Defenders is] If you get something level 10...THEN unbind it...then you shouldn't have named it in the first place. lol
I wouldn't mind it having to go up to level 10 before you're able to name it..kinda gives it some bonus prestige. Meow.
~Sev

Dungeon Defenders is a Steam/XBLA game, sorta RPG meets Tower Defence; point is that you get your weapons and as you upgrade them they get stronger etc etc then when they max, it gives you the option to rename them.
Unbinding it at +10 to, say sell it maybe if you need money more than you need a fancy UV, or taking a break and liquidating assets and the like. It would encourage the idea that you only get to name your weapons (as the flavour text implies) once you've had a lot of time to bond with it and use it; so you cannae just pick up some random new weapon and name it, gotta really spend time and money on it, max that baby off then rename it once it's finally yours. Then, if you choose to sell it, it's stuck with that name forever, so whoever bought it from you will always know where they got it from! :D

Make it another crown sink. This would be a constant sink, like ah and LD. Doesn't have to be much, several thousand cr so a majority of players can afford it.

5k cr to name a maxed piece of equipment is entirely reasonable I think. 10k is startin' to creep too close to the amount you pay when you want somethin' tangible; 20k for a UV after all, so about 5k-ish to get a wee aesthetic bonus; stack that up by at least 5 (and likely into the dozens) per player in the game and that's a sink of millions; a substantial chunk of that would likely be sunk overnight from the release of such an update.

For god's sake, first crates and keys, now name tags and description tags.
SPIRAL KNIGHTS, Y U NO STOP BECOMING TF2?

I haven't played TF2, so I don't really know what you're talking about.
I think it should be kinda like how players get named:
Weapon created: You have the option of naming your weapon.
Also perhaps during upgrading as well.
As for bought weapons, you could buy the option to name your weapon, or just wait to upgrade it, THEN rename it. (5* bought weapons will obviously have to be bought.)
I think I'll add that to the OP.

I would name my bombs:
Incinerator!(Fiery)
Retox(Poison)
LiveWire(shock cap)
Vlad(TSC)
Nypra(Freezing)
Kirby(G-Vortex)
My swords
Deathcalibur(The CIV i am planning to get)
Freezeblinder(Iceburst)
Also +1!

I can so see my bro Heavyknightguy screaming. OH MY GOSH! WHO TOUCHED SASHA!!! D=<
P.S. He loves playing tf2.
. . . but then we'd get PARTICULARLY vulgar names coming out of the woodwork here and there -- you know, the ones related to the Sword Whose Name Violates The TOS, shall we call it. THAT thing.
Among other rather rude and crass names.
So while it'd be nice . . . at the same time a lot of immature people would probably give their gear too-mature names.
That's my view of it at least.
