Name: Scatterbox
Damage: Normal
Appearance: Something basic, like the Autogun
Basic Attack: Shoots a burst of 3-5 bullets. 2 shots before reloading
Charged Attack: Shoots one massive burst of around 10-ish bullets.

From here the weapon can be crafted via the following series:
Series 1: Normal & Fire
3-Star: Smouldering Scatterbox
4-Star: Blazing Scatterbox
5-Star: Breath of Vog
New Charge Attack: Send out several Retrode-Style beams, for the 5-star version these are accompanied by ghostly Vog Cubs running along ahead of the beam explosions.
New Appearance: A steampunk look, with a fuel tank and igniter being added to the gun

Series 2: Elemental & Shock
3-Star: Sparking Scatterbox
4-Star: Shocking Scatterbox
5-Star: (Suggest a name if you want)
New Charge Attack: The wielder aims the weapon directly upwards, whereupon it zaps all nearby foes with bolts of lightning, the wielder receives a small shield while doing this.
New Appearance: A "mad scientist" look, barrel of the gun is now a Tesla Coil.

Series 3: Shadow
3-Star: Ghostly Scatterbox
4-Star: Spectral Scatterbox
5-Star: Phantasma
New Charge Attack: Summons a spirit that orbits the wielder like a Catalyzer bullet, this spirit will kamikaze any nearby enemy who tries to melee the wielder (or possibly just absorb the hit if that'd be too OP.)
New Appearance: A "ruined/ghostly" look, similar to the Skelly or Ancient Plate sets.

0.o T5?

I know, they suck

So itd be like a regular gun except in only shoots a few squares in front of you? Might be nice, make Gun/Sword loadouts less necessary...

Yeah I guess, the idea behind this weapon is that Gunners and/or Bombers can have something to fall back on if the enemy gets too close for comfort and they can't charge anything.

Not a bad idea. the style of guns in SK are all 'one handed', and i think a double barrel shotgun could fit into that category quite nicely.

But what about a penetrating type gun? Im not sure any exist at the moment, but i reckon they might be pretty cool.

but dude, all the Spiral Knights are freaking TOUGH. I've yet to meet a person in real life that can
chuck a porcelain pot as far as they can, and they barely even flinch when they get hit with most
attacks, and they barely even react to being on FIRE. Yeah..

Not exactly like the auto gun

Not exactly like the auto gun at all, other than shooting a bunch of projectiles. The autogun requires you to stay in place while the stream of bullets is fired, where as the shotgun is more run and gun.

Shotgun in sk must be like....

THIS http://www.dave-cushman.net/shot/jpg/duckfoot2.jpg . And instead cremnium we could use a piece of Crimsonite. So when u press attack button it wont shoot immediately, making click sound and some sparks appear near flintlock and only then it will shoot ( with same sound that gremlin flamethrowers doing when shooting projectiles instead of flaming). And its charged attack will be a wave of energy (wider spread, no intervals, pushback). Thats how i see shotguns in SK. Normal Line names could be : 3* (3 barrels) "Duck's foot" , 4* (4 barrels ) Fourshot , 5* (5 barrels) Death's hand. That means that 4* version will not hav aimed center barrel so u will need to angle ur attack properly. And i think it should be 1 or 2 shot per reload.
P.S. it WILL break theese stones and minerals 1 shot (if u stay close enough). Sometimes it will do same thing to monsters...so it will be a nice pistol

What I meant was that the basic 2-star Scattergun would have a similar aesthetic style to the Autogun, not that the two would act similar.

+1 for the OP

Basically the Callahan and Blitz needle having a child and this being the aftermath, Neat! (not sarcasm intended)
@Verodius
Varja's post for the 5* shock shotty

@Miiyu
its not EXACTLY like the auto gun, its rather similar no doubt

@Verodius
1. will you stop in place to fire? or run and gun? 2. make the spread the spread of the gun 2x wider but shorter than the auto guns range so one can hit several enemies up close but not too many from afar (hence the shotgun concept) 3.recoil/knockback after charge and regular attacks (or just 1 of the 2) 4. the shield for the charge attack with shocking scatter box is a little OP, like with the auto gun just time your charge shot when you fire or don't fire at all. an excellent discipline technique for gunslingers

@Triplescrew
I like the concept especially being able to destroy stone blocks and minerals in 1 shot, 5* name could use work. Bump

Boomstick!

I think that having a shotgun would be great. I try to never use the pistol except for hitting the cogs to take down obstacles, or gun-puppies from far away. It's useless up close. I think maybe having the shotgun would be a neat idea. More range but less power than the average sword, while also having less range, more power than the average gun. They'd be in the same line as other guns, just with a different effect. Instead of one-handed sharpshooters, double-fisted boomsticks just sounds fun to play with.

heres an idea. the first

heres an idea. the first weapon of the series could be called "military pistol" and there would be 4 branches off that so you would get a sniper, bazooker, shotgun and a chain machine gun. similar to autogun but you can run while firing and it takes longer to reload. should sound like a chain machine gun as well.

sniper- covers imense distances.
bazooka- fires an explosive rocket.
shotgun- fires multiple shots
machine gun- fire a constant stream of bullets, clip is a chain and needs longer to take it out and put it back in.

if a machine gun is a problem, still being too similar to autogun, could be changed to a mortor.

mortor- stop to fire, covers large areas and explodes on impact. take a while to reload between each shot.

Got an idea.

Maybe the shots are more powerful the closer they hit and provide more knock back. Vice versa they get weaker the farther they travel and do less knock back kinda like a reverse polaris. Except with the shotgun characteristics that are mentioned spread, multiple bullets, 2 rounds and all that. It would be great for getting out of a corner to when your mobbed XD. So +1 here.

have this as a boss item. Any new tier 3 bosses could give you the tokens to get it. Also this would own in LD. Scout plus shotgun = instant ownage XD

Shotguns tend to have a very decimating close range damage that falls off VERY fast on range. Taking a .45 Magnum shot point blank can be deadly depending on area hit but a shotgun blast at the same range and place is a MUCH larger threat to your life and body. How bad and why? A single hole of decent size versus a lot (50-ish?) of small holes.

i think this would be great

having shotguns in spiral knights (in my opinion) would be a large step forward. im a melee guy myself, and have been since.....well since i go two swords. if this actully gets in the game i have dibs one a breath of vog! i tried being a gunner once but i hated it. i kept getting swarmed buy tons of monsters, but if i had one of these shotguns (breath of vog for instance) i could own, AND get them out of my way. well thats all i have to say.
hope this works,
Z

Concerned

I am concerned that the whole "shotgun" idea may be a bit too much like trying to put a sword and gun together. This is like the sword-gun version of my gun-bomb idea http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/37703 that utalizes indirect damage. Bridging a gap between too weapon types leads to all sorts of complications. Firstly, a gunner shouldn't really fall into a situation where they require short range knockback, given that a gunners play style is reliant on plenty of space and kiting to keep monsters at bay. Each class has their own role to play in a fight. If a gunner desperatly needs knockback, pack a heavy sword, honestly you can't miss with it. The real question is, does this new item bring anything new to the game? In my honest opinion, I don't think it does. Anything that this item brings has already been acomplished by something before it.

Examples:
-Knockback from higher range then a sword. Well thats just silly for a shotgun. To keep it balanced it should have a reasonable spread, with knockback proportional to the amount of bullets that hit. At a range greater then that of a heavy sword, we would achieve minamal damage and knockback, and getting in closer to get more would just make it another heavy sword situation.

-Shorter range then a regular gun. At a shotguns maximum range we would expect minimal damage. At its closest range, of course we would expect maximum. The problem is now, that this gun needs to do equal or more damage then a sword to be "effective". If you want to get up close and personal just carry a melee weapon in the first place.

-The charge attacks. Still needs some work to be honest. The shadow variant charge is just ridiculous, given a player could use it to stop Vana from raining blows upon their head. The shock variant and fire variant would both be very OP. Fire due to its massive AoE potential and shock due to it being like a mix of the nitronome bomb and volatic tempest (probably smaller area though). If this was to be implemented, perhaps make all the charges fire 2 larger bullets that then fire a fanned shot of 3 each (this is so they would not overshadow the alchemer in terms of most possible targets), giving the gun slightly longer range in the process. Perhaps even give the shadow gun curse chance to enemies and self on charge attack only and change the 5* name to Ghostly Gambit or something (3* could be spectral and 4* phantom). The main point I am trying to get across here is that ALL weapon lines share the same base charge attack with the weapons own individual twist.

In short, while I do like the idea and do wish for more options for gunners besides Polaris, Needles and Antigua lines (with a few alchemers popping their underpowered heads up), I would find these sorts of weapons difficult to use. The user needs to put themself at risk for major damage, or perform minimal damage from a distance best covered by another gun. This completly goes against what I have learnt as a gunslinger.

N.B. For those people who get caught by monsters, try getting a status weapon (freeze or shock) to slow them down.

Name and opinion

I recommend Malfunctioner for the elemental gun 5* based off of the passive attack that mecha knights have when they pause and twitch while loosing small jolts of elemental damage and shock status to the surrounding knights.

In my opinion, a shotgun idea is awesome. I think it's a perfect addition to the gun series. However, I think it is a little overpowered and the 5* of the elemental and shadow kinda travel away from the shotgun idea. Maybe, for the elemental, if the beams were only towards a specific aiming direction it would see less uber. Also, I think a cool idea for the shadow charge one would be if it summoned a mini-turret that attacked shotgun style for 5-8 seconds or was attacked by surrounding enemies before fading.

I think your idea is awesome. I'd love to see what you could do with a rocket launcher idea.

This is something I would use, personally. I prefer "in-your-face" combat over "ima-shoot-you-from-halfway-across-the-screen" combat.

I want piercing+stun shotgun,

I want piercing+stun shotgun, that would be the ultimate combo
Shadow damage should get curse or poison at least so it's in par with the others

I kinda thought pump-action shotty would be cool. No reload, just that new shell reload after every shot. It would not slow the gunner down but would be about as long as normal reload, featuring that awesome back+forth pull and empty shell flying out

For the 5* name - Discharger

Make it a very short ranged version of the magnus. That way it causes knockdown. Perfect when baddies get too close. But it should be one shot.
Coz I mean cmon, think about a troika, and try not to make it more powerful than that. Perhaps a damage reduction? So that it causes knockdown and has a wide spread but its weakness is it doesn't do immense amounts of damage.

Piercing is good though. Then you can upgrade to burning shotty (Peircing + Elemental + Fire) or just plain Piercing if you're a pure gunner.
