why pets should and shouldnt. And a third option.

Positives.
pet swill be a great addition to characteristics, will be usefull in combat a sthey can fight for you with specific goals. namable and add an addition of weapon and armour choices to the game.
Negatives.
pets may unbalance combat and would either be too powerfull or weak. may slow computer, imagine 4 knights all with pets, speed of the internet wont keep up. when they are not used for combat, they are simply pointless. having no use at all except looks, which could just use accessory's.
NOW, the 3rd option.
Pets would be the same colour to our knights, namable, and would also giude our knights on the right track. pets will be able to giude our knights to certain objects, or along certain paths. will have a tab in which they have a command menu. (will display other options to like amterial giving) this will display multiple commands, to either giude the knight along paths which is the way to extra money and the like or along paths to the next elevator to help survival and prevent a knight with a single health bar left from walking into a ambush. could stop when something is wrong, letting you know to be wary. would hide in terrain when a fight breaks out, and blink in the shadow. your knight may choose to give items to your pet, like an material that would have different effects depending on the animal and material. (i thank starlinvf for the idea of giving materials, which is good for my idea of trust). for example, a fire coloured based pet, as the knight is heavily eqiupped with fire, is given a red shard, pet likes it as its a fire based material. another material it will not like. this could help biuld up trust in your pet, which allows your knight to perfom different commands.
may make internet a little slow so would only work in either 2 knight partys or solo. certainly should not be visible in haven, or lockdown.
plus, most people would go for wolver, so alllllllllllllll pets, should look different, depends on the knights characteristics and gear. other animal types should have sommething extra to make people go for them instead. only one at a time can be eqiuped, and only one pet per knight. this is knights best friend, always looking out for the knight even though it is no longer a combat tool.
Man's best friend.

it could be like the mecha knights except with the knights name on top(example Erickarrow's Pet Wolver, Chromolisk, ext.) and the knight could upgrade it like EQ

i don't know how you could use it in pvp combat.........

Have you read the main post? They won't affect PvP at all. Plus he already said to make them invisible there.

meaning they wont appear by invsible. though i suppose a chameleon, just for effect can blend with the background here and then. in a fight they could burrow, (wolver), blend (chameleon), perch up high (a flying animal), they could also hide in terrain like bushes or boxes to hide and scatter somewhere else when you smash it. would appear next to you if they end up far away. ty for the features juances, seem qiute cool.
would be permanantly eiupped to the knight. their name would be chosen when they are bought from a pet merchant, their type will also be chosen meaning, what animal are they, wolver, bat, chameleons and so on. snipes could be included as well. pet would have to be sold/or released, into the wild to get a new pet. best choose carefully, would be qiute sentimental saying goodbye to someone to never see them again. maybe too upsetting though, so should probably just be sold back for half the price. a new slot will be in the knights arsenal, will be permanent.
like the other posts on pets say, they would be miniture versions of other monsters. would change its colour to the knights layout/colours, and would be similar to our knights. matching them. perhaps the pet merchant can groom them for a price as well, so they could have patterns or their shape outline would be a little different. eg, a wolver is groomed to be striped and has a smoothe/rough coat.

The only real pet we'll ever need is Bechamel's Pocket Love Puppy.
Which NEEDS to be an accessory RIGHT NOW.

I dont know about you guy's but i prefer a simple battlefield. I already have to deal with a bunch of enemies and spammed polaris explosions. Sometimes, i find myself trying to kill a friendly mecha knight because it looks so much like the one thats trying to kill me. If we're going to have pets, I would just have them in haven. sure make them do tricks, introduce minigames for them and whatnot, but keep them out of the clockworks. It doesnt even look like they belong there.

would not ruin your game as they would hide when enemies appear, so you wouldnt get mixed up during it. would look much apart from other monsters for a start. if you want to use it in minigames, but not in clockworks you cant turn it off or on.
like the idea of minigames, not sure what kind so ideas here will be usefull. one idea is a maze, where we are the pet trying to get to the other end where a prize could be waiting or something like that. could be held by king crogmo's coliseum.
not so much an accessory, but they are a visual addition over the additions to the clockworks. pets will vary from EVERY monster type, except bosses. would also be much apart from monsters down to their colour, patterns and trims. the love puppy is included. icons could also be used when getting your pet groomed.
wont even glance combat, or the clockworks if you dont want it to. but people should get the option. the option of name, colour, style, type and the choice of if.

Well I love pets in anyway manner they come in any game they are in but combat probably isnt a good idea for spiral pets. also I feel they shouldnt resemble any enemy type creature and prehaps have one type of pet that is widely customizable, like Snipe pets that can look like robo snipes or zombie snipes and have one special trick for there out fight or something, as for helping the user I feel they could serve a purpose like warning where mobs are going to spawn or cover around weaker monsters but suttle things that you ahve to pay close attention too to notice so advanced players could actually take advantage of this, has for pvp, Snipes dont like seeing knights hurt each other so no place for them in pvp. I mean the strangers have them as pets. they would mostly be companions so yes they should be avalible in haven to mingle with other snipes. since there small little guys covering and waddling (idk what to call there walking style) around you it should take up to much CPU or what ever it would take up.
-Creig
P.S. it should be realitively easy to obtain one just go on a few missions for the snipe stranger and then you unlock the ability to purchase them for Cr or CE maybe like 15000 Crowns/175 CE and energy to tame them.

I know many people dont like the idea of having pets that battle and stuff but in many other mmorpgs there are so obviously it means that theres a way to balance that. Plus i dont know if we should have chromalisks or wolvers because it would confuse people, maybe snipes, sprites or shufflebots. Its not like i wouldnt like a jelly cube following me its just that it would be the best way to avoid confusion.
My idea for pets is to have them as weapons, they can attack only if they are the current weapon, otherwise they would just follow you.
Just like bombers that can only attack whit charge, pets will only attack by choosing target with the mouse. Thats just an idea.
A pet will also have negative stuff like lowering your speed or something like that, to prevent peaplo to just run around and let the pet do the work.
Those are just ideas but my point is that it is possible to have a pet and the game to be fair.

the best way to avoid confusion first off, is naming your pet and choosing its colour and so on. it will make it separate from every other animal, while keeping pets to what people want. all things will be included so snipes maning snipes too. your happy with snipes so go for them but dont start limiting other people.
Pets as a tool strips away the sole of it. the fun of them constantly being there, a knowable attraction and a great asset is what they should be. by asset, im meaning about supporting the knight in the idea of which way to go, to get where/what. i appreciate the thoughts, but pts really should have no place in combat anymore. instead they should fill a non existing gap in your knight's arsenal.
Pets are a soul character, i dont want to strip that away. otherwise they become like just something else ordinary, no longer an exceptional helper.
The choices of pets should be left open, colours will be arranged according to your desire along with any other form of style, they would cover one issue knights may have in the clockworks and also bring fantastique new minigames.
A range, A addition, And a soul.

I give up. Pet's are just WAY too much imbalance in the game. I've already lobbied for pets to actually come in existence in the clockworks, but they aren't there yet. But don't give up hope. SK is still a very young, maturing game, and when the devs run out of ideas they will eventually turn to this. :) Still think my idea of "The Constructor Series" is still better (BEST IDEA EVA!!!!).
I'm glad there wont be pets for a LOOOOOONG time. If they performed in combat they'd be A) op or B) really stupid and annoying AI, and if they just followed you around, then that'd just be extra polygons on screen and lag my game even worse.

um? ive already said pets wont imbalance the game with a reason why so read the posts please. thank you for the support Altos.
People have still yet to tell me some minigame ideas.
Also, after you defeat monsters they could drop and egg and you have to feed it energy to hatch

That's why they should get implemented. They WILL get implemented in the near future, whether people like it or not. I've already suggested my idea of the constructor series, so a non-op type of pet system will somewhat be on the lines of it.

uh... wouldnt really work for a wolver though. sorry.
but i like the idea of having to do someting to get it. though i dont wnat it to be like lockboxes, meaning on th prize wheel or having to wait till you come across a certain thing. i would rather have it to be known where to go to get which kind of pet. perhaps, the merchant who sells them wont just sell them to you, but instead youve got to prove you'l look after it well first. could be like bringing him certain materials to feed the pets in his storage.
either this or you have to save a pet that has been caged and left in the clockworks. first, he will ask you what pet you want. you dont get to see anything on it but eyes blinking while its in its cage, as when you save it and bring it back it becomes your pet. once you bring it back from the specified level, he explains why it was down their in the first place. he explains it was him and that he did it so your pet would imediatly be attached to you. which is why you must do this solo or the cage wont appear...
could be on a level in which is a arena at the end. but instead of facing a normal enemy you could face a special kind, not a boss exactly, but something stronger then your averadge monster. could be like an improved mecha-knight, as the cage was sent down with the merchants trial.

anyone have thoughts? espicially on minigames?
If there are going to be pets there better be an option to disable that crap so I wont have to look at those stupid things and have them waste memory on my computer.

I think there are some flaws with having a pet in some instances. Have you tried using a Mecha-knight against say... Snarby? They wack away at the invincible Snarby, and end up getting eaten alive as a result.
If there is going to be a pet, I think it should be like the Silkwings. It would float by players, providing say a healing or defensive aura. Maybe add in stuff like Lifesteal, damage reduction (Or even reflection), +knockback, +damage, +atk speed, etc to allies within a set radius (Not all at once though). To balance out, they would be an equipment slot, maybe like an armor slot. They would still have minor defensive boosts like normal armor, but they would be dramatically insignificant to other equipment of the same tier.

IVE ALREADY SAID WHAT5 HAPPENS WHEN IN COMBAT! please read the posts. that will also tell you about status's. everything you may ask. read and then post please.

This plan of your's might work! I've read a lot of pet promoting suggestions, but they obviously haven't been implemented/are being worked on. This idea takes a lot of the better things and arranges them in a good fashion.
Spiral knights is about the knights, thus the name. All the gameplay is quite centered around either being a team, or being skillful. (Kinda the same thing i know...) but pets should not fight. EVER. Thats not the reason for pets. Are there white and red balls lying around? No? Then no fighting pets. -.-* SK is doing a wonderful job of putting more Soul into the knights you play as. Costume slots, varying armors, and accessorys are all amazing ways to put some soul into your knight. And i feel that Sizuki's idea is more than right along those lines. Run around, show the way, Look cute, and represent! This is most definitely the SK way.
Notes: (Yes, things other than praise >u< )
A way to get your pets.
You know the two gates that don't have t2 bosses in them? There should be a chance that when a new gate is made, a special strata may show up. The strata can be changed, but it will let you know that its an anomaly when you're selling crystals. The levels should have the same elements as a traditional clockwork level, namely different parts that mash together to make a level. The stratum would decide what Creatures would show up and which ones could be bought. Gremlins would always show up. (caretakers or the like :D but gremlins and devilites would be more "partners" or something...) Now, seeing as you would get to buy a pet at the end of the level, the 2nd to last level would be a set sort of challenge. Completely different from the sort of refuge with gremlin huts that is the previous levels. I don't quite know what to make the challenge, so whatever. ^ ^~
IF there were any sort of boosts that pets give, it would be unmentioned in the description and to a hidden stat. e.g. : a small % bonus to knockback, flinch, walking speed, (Maybe) Hp (Would NOT add a bar of hp, just add a few #'s to the total count) and the like.
Again, i'm glad someone else wants to add more personalization and soul to SK. ^-^~

likewise. do you mean with your idea of getting them that by changing get paths to a certain type you then go along it you get your pet? if so, then maybe the pet/partner could be found on the level they would normally come from.
i WANT A SNIPE ^^ in my shulder !! or on the top of my head... it will be so cute :3

Yo Moocowman i think you may like my suggestion
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/36355
take a look at it.

Solution: Sniped stranger hats. Available in the AH buy price 500k crowns. ;)

.....................wait..for it.....................................................pet are in the survey! I clicked on it a few times and got the Q.: would you be interested in having pets, came up. I said yes. congrats!

theres a survey? where can i find it? also pets would be even cooler if they moved around after you. but if they can b like pocketed on your knight when you no longer whant them thats an idea. a snipe could appear on your shoulder and a wolver may have its head sticking out of your pocket.

the survey WAS on the welcome menu (after logging in and choosing a knight), but I can't find it any more

ok. thank you anyway tedme.
pets arent ruining combat anymore, theyre no longer simple attractions either. their even more.

Pet should NOT be inn the clockworkz at all :P just in haven and the training hall :3
Otherwise it will end up causing lag or getting in the way. The can NOT help u in any way, they must be only for show, like accessories. I really do sana cute witle wolverine following me around ^-^

lag? usually that would be just your internet and really i have said you can pocket them to disable them. i feel pets should offer more then simple looks. i also feel that going the wrong way and then walking all the way back is slightly boring.

The only problem is that it pet ever were introduced, they would cost a lot. I know that we all want them to cost things like materials (I liked that idea), but we all know that OOO need to make money.

well i dont mind it them being pricy so long as their permanent. in 1500ce or under will be good for me. thanks for the support to all the people who helped this idea and improve it.

not that i believe this idea has finished here, minigames, pet commands and features and grooming options are still something to think about.

-1 or +1
that would suck if it wouldn't be used in combat. combat is the main reason u would have a pet. It would be - 1 if it was just for show
- show right path
- 'bark' at secrets, like hidden graveyard places or that switch of d27 FSC
- collect crowns/heat
- cry when you are dead but sing/dance if someone revved you but you just didnt get up (yay rev indicator for allies!)
- mark or jump on spawn zones for easier bomb placement
