Inb4 "a MMO can't have level editors!" City of Heroes has one.

Ok so here's the idea. Create a level editor that we can access. Since Spiral Knights is a fairly simple game I'm sure the interface for it wouldn't be that difficult. You'd just pick a background/tone (like forest, or road, or whatever). Then you'd start off with a blank slate (or maybe have a big square to start off as a starting point). Then you could place various things like gates and what type of monsters spawn and spikes and switches whatever. Then you could put things like how many floors it has and then edit each floor.

A downside to allowing people to make things though is trying to make a way to get easy money. However if you create a system that regulates what you can do (like instead of placing each particular monster you just tell the game what type of monster you want like gremlins or goos) then it's not a big issue anymore. Another issue could be that nobody really plays the normal levels anymore that the devs made. So something that could be done is that you can't place treasure chests or merchants in your levels or not allow monsters to drop equipment/materials.

A neat thing about this whole system is you could integrate it into guilds. You first however would have to make it so you can actually do things with the guild. But you could make it so guild members can access maps that your guild has made. And then you could make it so you can place minerals in the levels. Then make it so any mineral you get from a player created level is donated to the "guild bank" that can be used to construct things like NPCs (like a travel NPC that you use those travel passes for) or structures to just make your hall look cool and unique.

I think having a level editor in conjunction with guild features could make for a really really cool system.

Edit: Oh and make it so these levels don't use energy, or at the least uses reduced energy costs.

Level editor now, but not after the release

I think that a level editor now would be great, as we could test thing far more easier and faster, as we are now in closed beta, and this is what we do. But, after the full release, it should be removed (instead of the guild ones), because it would not serve as right.

Maybe instead of entire

Maybe instead of entire gates, allow players to create single levels, or even single rooms to be used in random levels. Then these levels (or rooms) would be integrated into the rest of the game, encountered in the normal gates that appear.

I think that would make it feel more like you're really contributing, as well as add a lot more variety to the game. A way to track your own levels' stats would of course be crucial.

The only question that leaves is how to differentiate the interesting levels from the dull ones so that players aren't stuck playing bad stages all the time.

Player voting

Simply put the levels at a test for everyone: If a level get's enough tumbs up till the end of the week, it will be implemented, if not, it will be discarded from the list. Also, players would be able to do only 1 featured level (the one that goes to the game itself), and 3 extra for them, so the server doesn't overloads. Of those 3 extras, if one was featured, the player itself can change it with the featured level in play, and everyone that is not in a dungeon would not be able to get the first one, but would get the second one. A player could put in the pool any r all of his levels, and all the non chosen ones would be marked with a red star, meaning that it needs to be redone.

Yeah

If well done, it could be really cool. Reminds me of transformice.

great idea

Ive thought about this myself before. I think there should be monster 'ratings' for difficulty and these should have to be within a certain range eg.100-200 for t1, 200-300 for t2 etc... Then levels could be implemented on random depths (so these would be individual levels), and at the end players would rate the level, with high rated levels having a higher chance of occuring. This would also mean OOO would have to make less new content to make the game stay fresh.

I'd love a level editor too, but it'd be hard to balance

I too would love user-generated content in the form of easy-to-use editors, as it already seems like the maps would lend themselves to this.

The main problem is how would OOO balance it so that it's not just super easy farm-mode?

Would it be at Zero Energy cost, with Zero loot (just screwing around mode?)
Would mapmakers have to stock the loot themselves but get users' CE in return?
Would it be a monthly CE cost to host a map?
Would it be crown costs to host a map?
Would it be zero cost to host, mixed in with regular maps, but have stringent rules on loot & enemies?

I'm all for it, if OOO can come up with something they're happy with.

This game really needs a map

This game really needs a map editor of some sort. Don't care if you make it ingame / playable / contest-like ("pvpe"? player versus player-environment :D)... or just as an external tool , maybe support community mapping contest a little or whatever... the clockwork needs more fun rooms. There are so many unused possibilities... you should take a look at what players can come up with.
