It's really annoying having to go through a slow loading screen just to move between the auction house and various bazaar merchants. I see no technical reason why these two sections of haven can't be merged into a single area.
Merge Town Square and Bazaar into a single map zone.
@Pokenuevo When you complete a mission it takes you back to whatever section of haven you started the mission from, or the town square if you started directly from the ready room. The reason so many people are spawning in the bazaar right now is that the early tutorial missions warp you there.
@Heavy-Duty I doubt it, Bazaar is usually pretty much abandoned compared to people standing in front of the AH or at the gate.
The reason they have separate areas for Arcade, Bazaar and Town Square are because of two reasons - to avoid Lag and have more space.
Lag - If the whole area was fused together, the characters would freeze or lag alot because of the amount of players on screen.
Space - If every player were on the screen in the same area, how would you be able to click on certain things? Also, the game itself wouldn't be able to handle so many players in one area at once.
Bazaar is quiet, lets keep it that way. Also, I remember a bug report by a player a bit back that his brother's computer couldn't handle the town square section, and gave him a black screen whenever he tried to enter it, so he would just travel between the Bazaar and the arcade. Sonicfanlol hit the nail on the head with the loading and lag issue: Town Square also would take even longer to load because it would have bazaar tacked on the side, even if you just wanted to check your auctions, bazaar would load too. That would be very annoying.
It's true that many preliminary missions spawn you in Bazaar, and that's why many are there. However, I see people there now who aren't getting back from missions. There are people who now hang around there, buy stuff, alchemize, etc. It seems to become a little more populated from the times I've been there.
the load times for a mediocre PC are not that bad -- maybe allow people to change the load screen art to something other than that annoying snipe.
It's not really the fact that the load times are bad, its just that everytime we log in we MUST load town square, regardless of what we actually want to do there. Better to let the few people interested in the bazaar to have an additional load time rather than force the entire population of SK to endure those couple more seconds every time we load.
It all eventually adds up in the end, like my total DC time XD
@ Hex thanks for giving me the kind words.
Like I said, Lag would be the main issue. How many people would be able to stay on a screen for more than two seconds if it's just gonna go sloooooow.
I don't think anything that drastic needs to happen but it would be nice if there was a merchant that dealt in crowns in the Town Square. I usually offload more valuable surplus materials at the auction house and then go over to the bazaar and use a merchant to get rid of the materials I can't get a good price for like Scrap Metal, Ecto Drops, and Gel Cores then head back to the Auction House to replace the valuable materials once they've been sold. If I could dump my trash mats in Town Square it would save me quite a few load times. Bulky, the candy vendor, was pretty good for this during the Dark Harvest Festival. A more year round version could be a Gremlin recycling center that doesn't sell anything.
Bad idea. The more players that are in a map, the lag issue increases at an exponential rate.
The server needs to retransmit each movement to every player.
Lets presume there are 30 players in the Town Square and 20 in the Bazaar.
Lets do a drastic simplification and say that 1/3 of the players are moving in the case that they're separate. The server receives each movement and in the first case, has to receive 10 movements and send out 300 movements for the first map, and in the second map receives about 7 movements and sends out 140, for a total of 450 "events"
In the case of a combination, the server receives about 17 movements and trasmits 850 movements. Quite a difference, no? By combining two areas, you've pretty much doubled the servers work, and thus the lag.
@Dafsh Have you been to the bazaar? There aren't 20 players there (save for a few days after the missions patch, but that's a rather abnormal case). Plus, the resources currently used for bazaar instances can simply be used for more haven instances.
OK, sure, there's not 20 players in the Bazaar except for recently, but that's not entirely my point. My point was that combining the levels leads to massively increased load on the server, and if you saw what I was calculating up there, that means the "resources currently used for bazaar instances" are being used and then some -- you'd be capable of *less* haven instances, not more. That's just not the way that it works.
Combining Haven and Bazaar doesn't mean you can "create more instances". Its not like there's a set number of Haven/Bazaars that can exist. Its just a matter of resource and network support.
Its the same reason why we can't just have 1 "super-Haven" for all players -- we have multiple different Havens so that we don't lag the place to infinity.
... but take haven 1 as an example there are mmm lets say 30 players on haven and 2 on bazar, mixing it wont bring much more lag also if we dont lag to death of a busy haven 1 we wont lag on a bazar town square, not because of players atleast.
@Dafsh I know what you're trying to get at, but the point I'm trying to make is that you're wrong. From the point of view of the server, there's no difference between a town square, a bazaar, and a combined instance. If we need X resources for town squares, Y resources for bazaars, then X+Y resources will be more than sufficient for enough combined instances to maintain the same per instance load for a given number of haven players.
Not to mention that the players who just want to go to bazaar, and not town square, would be hit with the lag and large amounts of commotion and chat from the auction house.
Think about people with limited bandwidths too, I used up 20MB standing in Auction House for an hour. It would be double that if bazaar was tacked on.
I'm loving the idea! Although, I think Three Rings tried to make more attention for the Bazaar by having that be the return for those who finished missions. They also made it so people would have to go there for supply packs, unless bought in the AH. If they merged Town Square and Bazaar, it would be much easier for loading.
