Connection to Asia/Australia

I used to play Spiral Knights with a 3 bar connection from Abu Dhabi, UAE. Everything was fine until I had to move to Singapore. Now, look on a map how long the distance is from Singapore to either EU West or US East. Pretty far right? This will ALWAYS result in 1 bar connection, no matter what I do. I'm not the only person playing from Singapore, or Asia all in all. Some people from the Knightmare Lockdown team are Japanese, and suffer from "Red Bar-igitis". I recently tried to play Firestorm Citadel with a few friends, horribly it went. 10 seconds of lag. 2nd level, died 4 times in total where as I could normally solo it all the way to the last elevator with no death. In solo, it's pretty much the same. I've played for a few days, and there is no way I'll ever be able to fight the lag, and manage to play with it. There are also some Australians who play, who have it worse than me, or so I've heard.

Solution:
-Adding a server somewhere IN Asia. This might be pricey, and might take time to get it perfectly, as the Master server controls everything, and if it goes down, apparently we'd lose everything we ever had, which is a big no no. If money is a problem, you could always make a fund, or put some of the CE packs on sale advertising the need for money on behalf of the server. About 20% of the people at my school play the game, but the number might and possibly WILL go down if no server is added. All of them are big fans, along with me. The better connection from Asia and Australia would bring in an truck load of people, which would increase the amount of people playing Spiral Knights in total.

For now, I'll have to stop playing, the lag is too bad. There is nothing wrong with my connection or my computer. Thank you for reading.

I'm in Hong Kong, from the day I started playing SK. Most of the time I get a red dot, sometimes 2 yellow bars but will often drop back down soon.

I learned how to play with that lag, I don't play LD and I avoid fiend levels (particularly shock) if there is another good crown output map available. I get lag spikes once in a while, thrusting me into spikes or pulling me back to eat a trojan charge. But generally it's doable, once you get used to the timing. I have done no-hit solo Roarmulus Twins runs, for example.

I expect quality service for things I paid for, and a red dot connection is definitely not one. So I haven't paid anything yet. I'm waiting for OOO/SEGA to commit to the Asian market, then I will happily buy the DLC and some energy packs. If they don't add an Asian server, then I will continue to F2P.

You started out with the red dot, I didn't and the quick change is hard for me to get used to. Globalization OOO!

Heh, if they really add an Asian server, then I'll have to relearn my moves as well.

So if you want to keep playing, go back to T1 for 1 mission and rebuild your foundation there! You'd get back into T3 with new skills in no time.

I'm already full 5*, and I need to help my friend get his Crest of Almire, I don't really need to start all over again.

Not suggesting you start a new character... but if the timing is completed changed, you'd get hit hard in T3. Going back to T1 allows you to cheaply experiment with the new timings, so you can readjust without having to revive. Once you get used to the new timing (shouldn't take long) you can go right back to T3.

I'm also in a "red bar zone" (Australia) and I have terrible latency.

Yes you can adapt to it, but your playing will probably never be as good as someone without latency.

I got on a computer with a high speed connection at an internet cafe, had about half the latency, and because of my previous disadvantage, flogged T3 OCH easily, and facerolled my way through many other levels.

Then I went back home.

I would love to have an Asia/Australia server so that my skills are actually visible to other players in the party.

Funny you should say that. Welcome to our red dot!
One thing I notice is that it's worse to connect to the EU West server. Loads of packet loss issues.

Anyway, you'll have to adjust to the lag here. Shield more often. Favor running over charging. Dodge traps early, cross traps early.
If you need some place to adjust, I'd suggest doing the RJP mission over and over. Once you're fine with lumbers, random attacks, and bullets, you'll pick things up quicker elsewhere.

Edit: Mind you, I'd LOVE to have an Oceania/Asia server.
Editx2: Oh yes. Be careful of walking into corners. Sometimes the server insists you haven't cleared the corner and decides your current location and direction is moving-with-face-to-the-wall.

Also, if you feel like your location isn't syncronised (rubber banding etc) walk into a corner. It will resync your location with the server.

The most annoying monsters of ALL for people with bad latency are T3 wolvers. They teleport in front of you then teleport away, which you don't see, you only see your character getting flung back and forth across the level as the server tells your client that you've tripped on a stupid frostifur's tail, or have been impeded by an invisible rabid wolver.

I've noticed that shield bumping is highly unpredictable, so I can only use it when I'm cornered, lest I find myself flinging enemies into my allies, instead of away from.

???

They should really do this if they have the funds, If they have not...

They should think the profits of an Asian/Australian server...
More people are coming
More result/chance of buying CE...
The profit will be like 3x more than the cost of a new server!
If they have higher priorities, it's fine, atleast make us notify that this will happen soon >.>

I rarely post on the forums, but I live in Australia and experience extreme lag so I would love an Australasian server. It's annoying getting hit by FSC zombies before you even see their animation, as well as losing health even after you just ran across a pit of spikes. :(

3O can't start their own Asia/AUS servers even with money.

They have to get local game providers to set up the servers with a licence (for Asia that usually means someone less competent than OOO and for AUS that usually means nobody at all...). I've seen the same thing requested on quite a few other US/Global MMOs and most of the time the players are told there are legal obstacles preventing the parent company from going in.

Remember,

Elevator usage = money for OOO.
More players = more elevator usage = more money for OOO.
Asia/Australia playing more = more players = more elevator usage = more money for OOO.
Also Crimson, they can try. Just asking, which other Global MMO's have been prevented?

Foreign companies can't set up if there's a local provider.

Remember that the local telco is the one holding the bandwidth (i.e. telephone lines and wireless frequencies) that MMO providers need to run their servers and there's a bit of protection for homegrown companies. If anyone wants to set up servers for their game in X country they first have to check if there's any company that would be interested in doing it for them, and if any locals are even contemplating a setup then the parent company has to go through them.

Even Blizzard has had to make agreements with local companies to get their games into Asia although they certainly have the budget to orbital drop an entire HQ in whatever region they want.

Global MMOs only have their servers in one or a few countries. Everyone else is connecting from overseas like we in Asia and Australia connect to SK US and the 'Global' part is simply a lack of region locking.

"seems obvious they are only holding back, because they have the funds."

Obvious how? You run a small gaming business? I don't, but even I know there can be things going on we are not aware of that could be 'sapping' that money elsewhere.

Regardless, OOO more likely than not knows of the need for a new server.

Inb4OOOsuockupwithhighpingthereforenoneednewserver, shielding against devilites for me is useless. By the time I see their animation, it's too late.

I agree

We do need an Oceania server, and I'm sure the devs know this, but new servers ARE difficult to make. But if they do make an Oceania server, it'll be worth it. I would finally be ably to do FSC without dying 876543676543456765 times.

Oh ho ho

In a way, it is sort of a relief to find that this is considered "normal" for Oceania players (I am playing on my netbook). In another, just as tangible, way, that is very, very unfortunate to know (although if I did update my hardware, at least I wouldn't have to worry that I'm still still getting 2 FPS and desperately flailing around telekinetic wolvers).

It's unfortunate in the main because apart from making a very enjoyable game far less enjoyable for what may very well be a decent enough proportion of players (or just as possibly not, I do not have the figures), it also detracts in some ways from the community side as well. Goodness knows there's little I can do in my guild at the moment if I can't join in on most runs without being equivalent to an ungodly NPC-millstone hybrid*. Basically what I'm saying is that chat and T1 solo runs are fine up to a point, but it sucks not being able to party down with your friends.

If OOO (a small but hard-working outfit) could find their way to supporting Asian/Oceanic players, I would be overjoyed and possibly even put aside some of the budget to pay them for their troubles (it really is that neat a game**).
Meanwhile, I have to agree in essence with LeximanCreeper. Although in certain instances I can account for lag, I find that it fluctuates so much during fights that it's too unpredictable - hiatus it may have to be.

Loads of false info here, to set things straight: Spiral Knights servers are hosted on Amazon's EC2 cloud which has locations all over the world, two in Asia with being one located in Singapore and another one in Tokyo (http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#pricing here you can check all the locations and the prices for them). They don't have to go through any "legal obstacles".

Another Aussie

Hi, I got tired of searching for the best post to agree with... And I majorly agreed with this one. I'm another Aussie player, and I love to play SK, especially when my SK friends are on. But it's loosing its appeal for me because I can't keep up due to REALLY bad lag, enough is enough, and in this case, enough is too much. My friends, who are in America, and have run with me often enough to see my lag have encouraged me to join the petition for Australian or at least closer servers. I have put money into this game and supported the people who make it... Sega, Three Rings, but they can't support their player base? Or at least a part of it? I have recently updated my computer, and even now my computer still lags bad enough that I can get killed when I know it shouldn't be possible, and even have a screenshot of me dead when it says I have life, how do I fight that? And how do I improve my gaming when my lag is temperamental?

it states that there will be a new server in traditional chinese language which is designated for the taiwan/hong kong/macau communities (server probably be located at taipei).
however it is seperated from the current servers, in other words people new to make brand new accounts in order to access the traditional chinese server.

Hmm

Your place might not have a strong satellite that would result to make your internet slower. I've looked at the place you moved. As for my result, I have a 4 bar radar and sometimes 1 bar. Yes, I get lag too. All Im saying is I live in the eastern part of Canada. Maybe reset your modem? What service provider are you using? I highly recommend you use Bell/Videotron. Both are very good services and internet connection is good with it. If you still have problems, contact support.

Problem solved.

Totally Agree

They should really add a server in Asia. Every time I play......When I get hit by projectiles, it takes 4 seconds for me to actually take damage. Monsters suddenly pop out of nowhere, etc , etc, etc.
