For bold I do TEXT TO BE BOLD
End result: TEXT TO BE BOLD

For italics, I do TEXT TO BE ITALICIZED
End result: TEXT TO BE ITALICIZED

For citations, I do TEXT TO BE CITED
End result: TEXT TO BE CITED

Most forums have a different (IMO better) system that offers more flexibility. Most of the time I see something like text be how you bold something. The principle is the same, but the details tend to be different.

Also, a lot of other forums have stuff like quotes, font color changes, text size changes, etc. There should be an equivalent to the "More information about formatting options" on each forum.
