PLAUSIBLE METHODS FOR: Two-Handed Weapons

Okay. Let's have a crack at this controversial topic. I'll try to make it as plausible as possible.

Stats
Okay, this is how I envisage the Stats of a two-handed weapon.
As you can see, it has both the stats of a Sword and a shield. This is because of a very simple reason; It is both a Sword and a Shield!

Sword Aspect
Let me explain. The sword stats are exactly what they say, they affect how fast the sword swings and how much damage it does. Simple, right?
Unfortunately, since the weapon is it will require new animations. Also unfortunate is that I do not know how to program animations. So there's that.
The speed should be equitable to Troika/Sealed Sword, since, y'know, giant two-handed sword.
The damage should be moderately high, since, y'know, giant two-handed sword.

Shield Aspect
This is where it gets slightly interesting.
The sword itself is the shield! In the inevitable event that the Knight needs to shield him/herself, they can turn it so that its flat side faces outwards.
In this case the defensive stats come into play. The Attack Power/Speed doesn't affect the deployment nor the damage it can take, the shield barrier still deploys near-instantaneously, and it health is still dictated by the Shield Health.
The Shield Damage is what you expect, it shows what damage the Sword can defend from when its used as a shield. The Shield Health affects both the Shield and Sword Aspects. If the Shield is broken, then so is the sword and it can't be used - as indicated by an 'x' over the weapon icon. When the shield recovers, so does the sword.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to code the animation for turning the sword onto its side.

Clarification

  • The Sword disallows the use of a shield when drawn.
  • Unique animations are needed.
  • The Sword is slow to swing.
  • 2 Hit Combo: Hit 1) Overhead smash - Moderate Damage, Hit 2) Sideways Sweep - High Damage. Encourage people to follow through with their attacks, rather than hit once, shield, repeat ad infinitum.
  • Sword Attack Damage/Speed works as you expect.
  • Shield Health/Damage works as you expect.
  • If Shield is broken, then sword is broken too. Won't work until shield is restored.
  • Endnotes
And that seems to be it. A two-handed sword that functions as a shield.

One simple incompatible

One simple incompatible problem: Lockdown.

And I repeat what I always said: monster die fast enough with a regular calibur.
We dont need a super strong 2-handed thing that also limits our defenses.

Also imagine having 4 of them, constantly switching, each having their own 'shield'. Could lead to immortality.

Based on those stats

What star rating is that?

Other than that, this seems unnecessary. Spiral Knights is not the kind of game dual wielding would work with. The problem is not so much integrating the ability to shield but the tactical reliance on being able to shield. Try doing T3 with a Troika with no shield. Does it make sense to play that way? I know you try to combine a sword and shield together so their effects are intertwined (if the shield half of it is broken, so is the sword half) but it would be more of a hindrance than new utility. If Troika and Sealed lines were never released or were changed to work this way it could work.

Just add bloody shields.

I mean, this isn't your average MNO. Break some rules.

Just add shields.

Most people got dual wield from Archeron!

So yeah, just add animations and keep the sheidls.

Oh well

It was worth a try. I just wanted to try a method which would solve the problem of shielding w/o a shield. Also, never thought that there would be someone crazy enough to get a full suite of 2-handed weps, but there you go! You learn something new everyday. I guess, this is more of a novel weapon than a practical one. I'll just keep it around in case I need to arm a humanoid boss. Never know when you need that.

At least you did better than most

I have this thread bookmarked anyway.

I was serious about heavy swords. If they were changed to work this way instead of being released as one handed swords it could potentially work. If they change them now it would cause an uproar with heavy sword users, since it would inhibit their defensive abilities; no one would whine about Gran Faust being overpowered in Lockdown anymore, but they would find other things to whine about anyway.
