Conspiracy Theory Time!

Everyone knows that each Stranger in haven has a snipe on their person. There are two Exception, that being Hailoh and Basil, the stranger near the entrance and the traveling merchant respectively. Hailoh is being watched by many snipes in the local vicinity of him. And well, Basil is the only Stranger who really moves about (In theory, or he could just be occupying the same space forever). These two could also be hiding snipes on them (E.g. under their hat), but I reckon this is unlikely. *

On top of this notice how each of the major things in Haven are being controlled by Snipes? both the Auction house and the Training hall are controlled by these creatures. The symbol haven is the town on top of a giant snipe. As well as this, the busiest area of haven (Often in front of the auction house) has the most snipes there.

Why am I bringing these up? after having a discussion with the guild members we came up with a theory. Well, could it be that the Snipes are the ones in charge? The first alien creature you see when you arrive on the cradle is a snipe.

If the snipes are in charge, it could suggest that they are controlling the strangers, and suggesting what you should do. I mean, the strangers seemed to be willing to allow you to crash in their city rather easily. Especially since they are alien, and would imaginably have some kind of difficult communication differences?

Further evidence for the Snipes controlling the Strangers:

“While no knight has ever found a hint of mercy in those beady black eyes, one Stranger tells that snipes are, among other things, actually incredibly modest beings”

Notice how the Knights view is almost conflicting with the strangers view? Perhaps the strangers are trying to feed propaganda due to being controlled by the snipes.

If the snipes were the ones who caused the crash of the Skylark, then they would know where the crash site of pods are - this could just be coincidence of meeting up with abundant snipes at the crash site. However if you look at it from a different perspective, could they not be viewing how competent you are as a new species.

Now lets link this in with a quote from the Shadow lair echo stone:

“Twisting his creation into a game of death, it now devours all who enter its iron embrace”

if this is indeed referencing snipes as the creator, then, does this mean that the knights are part of their game? and as the newest contestant for these games, they are looking at us closely and observing our actions? (Furthermore suggested by the fact that there are few snipes down deep in the clockworks, only ones down there are actually looking at Knights who are researching stuff).

And here’s another one:

“Hold dearly this fire in you, for darkness will consume all the night if its stars begin to fade.”

Lets add in this quote:

“beady black eyes”

While looking at the eyes of a snipe, they are pitch black with a star in them (I know its supposed to be light glinting off them but it kind of looks like a star. Could the one who created the echo stone be using this as a metaphor for the snipes?

If in the extreme case that this is true, what does this mean for us? Well who knows, it could be that the snipes are in fact controlling the entire situation, and using whatever species it deems the most competent. The Alpha squad could have been taken in for dissection by them when they realised that the knights are actually quite competent as a species, meaning that they could potentially be used for assimilation. They are doing this because the strangers the numbers of strangers are quite low, especially in comparison to the numbers of knights (There are 11 left, and 3 of them have “Died” off, showing a death rate of 3 over 1 and ½ years). If the knights can prove themselves worthy of the snipes for it to be beneficial for them assimilate to the knights, then the sprites are infact parasites. It would also mean that the sprites, although they look quite small and weak, are actually really intelligent, much like the mice from Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. What does this bode for the Snipe’d stranger hat? Perhaps a production model to see if they can begin to control the knights.

*Additional theory: Perhaps the traveling merchants, of whom sell the crafting recipes (the only non-knights who do so) also have no snipes. Maybe they are proactively trying to get you away from supplying energy/crowns directly to the snipes for the 0-3* items they supply. Viewing this in mind, they also only hide in the clockworks now. Quincy used to hide in the rescue camp, but who knows, maybe he was picked off quickly by the snipe army, explaining his removal? Basil could be one of the few strangers who have yet to be affected by the snipes as he lurks in the clockworks to avoid the snipes who may not be able to defend themselves on their own down their... Unless they are able to begin to control the knights...

TL;DR: Conspiracy theory that Snipes are the big bad of the game and are actually trying to take control of us because they are parasitic beings.

I thought I was the only one!

I have suspected exactly this for ages!
If you've read Timothy Zahn's Cobra books, this makes perfect sense. Snipes (Mojos in the Cobra trilogy) are capable of telepathic control that the victim is completely unaware of. Once we all start wearing them on our heads, we will slowly be twisted into their own personal army. Knights rip through thousands of monsters in the Clockworks- by wearing these hats, we are handing them the most powerful tool ever to crash land on cradle.
Tl;DR: Snipe hats are evil.

Sorry to barge in on your theory

But this theory is nothing but gremlin chatter. It is confirmed that the "darkness" in the echo stones are the swarm. And you may have a slim chance at being right about the strangers but honestly, they are birds. Calm down and please rethink this little theory of yours although its pretty creative

Dirtmaker: While it is easy

Dirtmaker: While it is easy to assume it is the swarm, there is nothing to suggest that there is more than one meaning, or that the two are linked.

Also why are you telling me to calm down? I just constructed an essay out of a theory based on the information i can collect at hand.

Also you may say their just birds, but you know, Look at them, do "Just birds" form training halls, or auction houses? Also this is fiction the appearance of the snipes may not be accurate to what they're like. Just like the phrase "Don't judge a book by the cover". on top of this, I can think of many other medias where creatures like birds, mice, ect are smarter than people.

I think this is very creative.

And, since I'm bored, I'll join in.

What if the snipes are the swarm itself, hiding in the snipe bodies? If this is possible, the swarm would have already entered Haven. If this is true, the Swarm may have already taken over the planet. And that means the gremlins would be only trying to help us knights. But since we kill them off, they have no choice but to defend themselves.

It's already clear the gremlins hate the swarm, shown by the dead gremlins at the start of the Unknown Passage. What if there was more to it? Furthermore, maybe the Architect created the clockworks to protect the planet's creatures from the snipes.

I rest my case.

Dirtmaker
Sharm person

Actually why do I assume its the swarm? Because nick himself said it was the swarm and because what are we going to find in the core? A birds nest full of snipe warriors and stranger guards? Get real. Gremlins are the main mob to the Sprial Order and own the twins, the factory and the entire OCH operation. We don't use our guns to kill snipes. That is only a dream

Why am I arguing about this.

Well, why worry?

We have every kind of weapon from pierce to shadow with damage bonuses max.. if those snipes wanna piece o us, we can give it to em >:]

Has anyone ever thought that

Has anyone ever thought that maybe Snipes are the juvenile form of a creature that we might not be able to see since we can't look up?
They seem to be too plump and downy to be mature birds and they don't exactly fly around.
Don't see any eggs or nests in Haven so maybe the Stranger's component's and big dresses provide the right temperature for the Snipe's Eggs to incubate. That's why all the little Snipes hang off them, because they Strangers are Snipe's momma.
Probably why they're so protective of them too.

@Trying/Ironoid:

There is no thread that is legitimately trying to discuss this as a possible theory. This is the only one. I mean there are a few comments, but not a discussion thread. There is also a few fan stories, but not an actual discussion.

@Dirt: Im sorry, but I have not seen where nick has produced this comment, however there is not a clear arguement for or against the fact that the snipes could be related to the swarm in some way

They're Angry Snipes.

They thought we stole their eggs.

The Skylark crashed because a Snipe shot out of a slingshot and blew off its wing.

Then it was revealed the Devilites stole their eggs, so the Snipes want us to fight them and get their eggs back.

@Artistbma: I like that idea,

@Artistbma:

I like that idea, that was one of the ones I suggested with the guildies while producing this theory. However that is REALLY concerning.

It could even be the case that this is what the Swarm turn into while they receive a certain level of photons (Assuming that Shadow lairs occur at a deeper depth than the normal clockwork levels, and that the deepest level that the snipes can occur at is D29). On top of all that, the Swarm beasts/gremlins/constructs/slimes could be failed attempts at snipe assimilationist?

this idea could be a little far fetched, but who knows, it could totally be legit...

Oroseira's picture

Ooh, I like this.

Yikes.
Maybe the snipes ARE the swarm and the swarm has taken over cradle already, and is starting to get bored of controlling strangers, so that's possibly why the Skylark crashed. They forced it down with possibly a downburst and it crashed. So the swarm can use the knights for their own evil purposes. And that might be true about all the swarm monsters being failed snipe assimilation subjects...
