This is either a Spiral Knights breakthough, or someone was just tired one day and decided to randomly compare character art. I'd go with the former.

So then, following this logic, Almirians are somewhat related to Devilites, like their ancestors or Devilites are an off-shoot or something.

Or Krogmo simply simply likes wearing Almirian clothing, and took it from some dead Almirian noble.

Here's a list of details Krogmo has that make him look like a devilite and ergo me think he's the King of the devilites:
-Has horns on his head;
-Broad mouth, minus the zigzag lips;
-Overall shape is roundish and chubby, like a devilite;
-Like Alpha mentioned, has devilites working under him;
-Color suggests he was perhaps a yesman before rising to the top;
-The coliseum he owns pretty much has a lot of monsters in the crowd, predominantly devilites.
A little comparison between this (http://wiki.spiralknights.com/images/b/b2/Monster-Yesman.png), this (http://wiki.spiralknights.com/images/4/43/Monster-Devilite.png) and Krogmo (http://media.spiralknights.com/wiki-images/5/5c/Krogmo.jpg).

Eh? Eh? C'mon, ya gotta admit he closely resembles a devilite.

~Your "horns"? That's just the shape of his froggish head/eyebrows.

~Broad mouth? Yes, like a frog.

~Round and chubby? Again yes, like a frog.

~Devilites sell his stuff? Ok, and we have various "good" gremlins that sell random stuff. Conspiracy? Nope.

~Color? Frog colors...

~Coliseum audience? Yeah that one never made much sense, but there's more monsters there than just devilites.

~Comparison? No resemblance at all when compared to Ole' Vanaduke.

I'm for the Legion of Frogmire!!!

Oooh! Hidden history stuff!

I like little things like this being an artist and storywriter myself, so excuse me if I get a bit too giddy about this.

I think at some point in Spiral Knights creation the idea for the Almirians and Krogmo being one of them is what they originally intended. The similarities between the two are just too apparent in those two pictures for it not to be otherwise. Though another acceptable explanation may be that Krogmo, another space voyager who crash landed on Cradle, just happened across some Almirian noble's clothes and started to call himself "king." Just what is he King of anyway? Reminds me of a certain royal blue penguin......

However with the more recent updates, the Almirians seem to have a figure much like the Knights. That's not to say that the Almirians don't eventually grow up to be as gigantic as ol' Vanaduke. Though the fact that both Lord Vanaduke and King Krogmo seem to be of some nobility seems interesting. Maybe Almirians of nobility were ones with a similar build? Seems like something cool OOO could play around with.

As for the Devilite connection, I don't think that there's a really big connection. I remember reading somewhere that the Devilite are from the Underworld and were summoned or traveled their way over to Cradle in some fashion. They have certainly been there for a while considering the massive cities they've built, so they probably interacted with the Almirians in some way. Whether that was friendly or not is hard to say, though the fact they work for Krogmo seems to state that maybe they were on friendly terms.

The way I see the history of Cradle so far is like this:
The Core is discovered by the Almirians and maybe the Owlites, who build their kingdom around it and protect it. By themselves, they made various mistakes/dark rituals that may have lead to the creation of the Zombies, Fiends, and Spookats, who would eat the Owlites to extinction. Eventually the Gremlins, a far more technologically advanced race landed on Cradle. They got along with the natives of Cradle and proposed the construction Clockworks to further protect the Core. Pulling in various creatures from different worlds they created the various stratums and levels of the Clockworks.
However, over the centuries the Gremlins lost their way and began to go mad with power. Their leader, King Tinkinzar, the original "architect" of the Clockworks, wanted the Core to himself. As the rest of his Gremlin kingdom continued building the Clockworks outward, he went to work on the creation of the Swarm, an entity so corrupt that it would break through the Almirian defenses and control the Core. It corrupted and wiped out the Almirian Kingdom, leaving only husks of their former glory in the forms of the evil Lord Vanaduke and the Trojans. Tinkinzar is still trying to reach the Core and the Core is pulling in whatever it can from the surrounding space to help it.
It called the Jellies, who being the rather simple species they are, just decided to take up residence in old Almirian structures and called themselves "royalty." It called the Lichens, who were unfortunately similar to the Jellies, but were more interested in making colonies and corrupting the Jellies to make the elemental flavored Jellies. It called the Strangers, who were no good at fighting the Gremlin threat and have taken refuge in Haven, the biggest city on Cradle's surface. Finally it called the Spiral Knights, causing their ship, the Skylark, to crash to Cradle. The Knights are all the Core could have hoped for. Strong, brave, and able to adapt to their strange environment, they fought through the denizens of the Clockworks and eventually the Alpha Squad reached the Core. But the darkness pursued them. The Swarm attacked and injured one of the Knights, Rulen, and backed them into a corner. Left with no choice, the Core opened itself to save the Alpha Squad...
Now it's up to the remaining Knights to break through the Swarm, reach the Core, save Alpha Squad, and defeat King Tinkinzar. Now if only we could stop building Guild Halls, accessory shops, and beating each other up in Krogmo's coliseum, we could actually get somewhere.

........I kinda got carried away there, didn't I?

@Zopyros-ll

This is the way I see the History of this Game, taking into account the many leaks that OOO gave us; going from the Planet that we now call the Core to the artificial planetary prison that we call Cradle.

So there was this one planet where many kingdoms of many different races ruled, the well-known being the Gremlins, Owlites and Almirians. Gremlins were experts at Machinery, Owlites masters of Magic, and the Almirian Kingdom a neutral, peaceful nation.

Out of all of the Kingdoms, the Almirian one was the first to fall; indeed, many were the Kingdoms wanting it: the amount of land was massive, and their military considered inferior. As the war continued on, Vanaduke -a young king of the Kingdom- decided to look for more power as the Almirian Army was growing weaker by the day. He then found by the peak of a cold mountain the power that he needed to thwart the kingdoms invading the land.

That power was what would be called later the Swarm. A corrupt, yet amazing power source that would give Vanaduke the power to crush all -and he did. Returning to Almire, he burned everything in sight with the corrupt power that had begotten him. He then lead his fiery undead forces to destroy all the other kingdoms, expanding the Swarm in the process.

The Owlite Kingdom was getting worried with this new threat, and decided to tap into the Dark Arts. Unfortunately for them it backfired and led to their own demise when cat-like ghosts with a never-ending hunger were summoned. The Owlite race vanished out of the face of the planet in a matter of weeks...

By this point, a lot of Gremlins -who had the technology to travel space- escaped from the planet, including the king. Those who stayed chose Tinkinzar as their new leader, and decided to build an outer shell enveloping the entire planet as fast as they could. Some amount of Swarm managed to espace their would-be eternal prison, but they wouldn't be able to do much away from the Core as the vast majority was confined within.

The Core, depraved of Oxygen and any ways to develop nature, rot. All that was left inside was a tremendous and corrupted power source. The cleaner, non-corrupted version of this power would come from "dead" Swarm and would be vastly used to power machinery, among many things: Mist Energy. Eventually, progress would be made to be able contain more Mist Energy under crystallized versions; it would be called as Crystal Energy.

By the time the Shell was completed, many breakthroughs in Technology had been done, among them the ability to create an artificial Planet rotation, an artificial stratosphere, artificial gravity and the ability to take parts of other distant planets via distortion of Time and Space.

King Tinkinzar then decided to create the Clockworks: a complicated complex designed of many spherical rings put one after the other in order to protect the Core from ever being opened. With the help of Devilites, a inter-dimensional race summoned to this world -like many other fiends- by the Owlites, they managed to finish many rings. For the most part they ripped of the Core's parts -without the Swarm- and teleported them to the Clockworks where they would be later be connected to other parts of the ring. Eventually the rings were getting too big to use the Core's parts, so they brought parts from other planets.

Aside from Devilites, Gremlins have also brought other non-infected monsters from the Core: sharp-winged bats called Greavers, pure, healing butterflies called Silkwings, warrior statues made alive or knights corrupted by a dark crystal on their back called Trojans, the hungry cat-ghosts and skeletons called Kats and Zombies respectively, haunted, dog-like turrets called Howlitzers, fast-burrowing fox-like creatures called Wolvers and hard-scaled chameleons called Chromalisks. There are also sentient jelly blobs with the ability to merge and grow spikes that are called Jellies and Lichens, who came mostly from asteroids and meteors. Strangers, peaceful creatures who are adept at mining and mostly always accompanied by friendly birds called Snipes, have been also brought to this world.

So at last the Clockworks were complete, with elevators allowing to go from one ring to another to booth. However, Tinkinzar knew that even these many rings wouldn't be enough for invaders to reach the Core, so it ordered to make obstacles and hazards. Among the biggest achievements of this project are the construction of many robots that would protect the Clockworks from intruders. The Gremlins seem to have taken references from existing creatures in order to build these robots: while Scuttlebots act like Chromalisks, Retrodes act like Zombies and Lumbers like Trojans. Gun Puppies also seem to act like Howlitzers -in one way or another, but the biggest mystery lies in Mecha Knights who seem to act like the Knights of back when the Core was inhabitable. Many of these robots have run amok and don't listen to any Gremlins, but still fulfill the objective they've been given.

And when at last everything was completed, King Tinkinzar had ordered all Gremlins to keep the Clockworks up to date. Tinkinzar then shut himself off as he harnessed the Mist Energy coming out of the Core and only started to give orders with nine executive members finely chosen by Tinkinzar himself: The Crimson Order.

This new, highly mutated planet would be named as Cradle.

Fast forwarding a bit; The Spiral Order's Space Ship, the Skylark, crashes into Cradle: Its main Tearium Core explodes, and all of the Spiral Order is now stuck in this unknown, strange planet as they hope to find more Tearium, or at least a new power source. It just so happens that their planet scanners have found a very powerful source at the core of this planet as the Skylark was crashing, so the Spiral Order has set up a team with the best of their best to go look for that power source: The Alpha Squad.

The Alpha Squad has managed to reach the Core, but was ambushed by the Swarm; with no other choice, they jumped right into the Core as they saw their own doom appear before them under a bright, eye-blinding light. They were never heard from again...

When the Skylark crashed, most of the Spiral Order Knights were ordered to board into an Escape Pod. With no time to bring in their high-ranked equipment, they boarded the pods where inside they've been given the basic survival equipment: a Proto Armor Set, Sword, Gun and Shield.

And here you are now: Your Pod crashed safe and sound in Cradle, and as you look around the new world, you begin a fresh new adventure.

You have crashed. You are stranded. But you are not alone.

Suddenly, you hear something beeping, like if a distress call...

@Sgt-Brownie:
If you did Shadow Lairs you would know the core was originally made to protect the entity inside it, not to trap the swarm. Vanaduke was not changed into his current form by the swarm, but rather by magic/a curse. Also, the gremlins built the clockworks under the instruction of the entity in the core.

"If you did Shadow Lairs you would know the core was originally made to protect the entity inside it, not to trap the swarm. Vanaduke was not changed into his current form by the swarm, but rather by magic/a curse"

Actually the theory I heard was that the Core itself is the entity, which was trapped inside it's mechanical Shell by Tinkinzar after the Core entrusted him with knowledge etc.

As for Vana, I was lead to believe the 'Curse' that was laid upon him was a result of the Swarm's corruption; After he sought power it was given to him, but it corrupted him to his core and he became lumbering fire giant etc. According to FSC lore, Vana sought refuge in a cave with an altar to an unknown deity, where he muttered in anger and despair until dark power overcame him and stuff; pretty inkeeping with the Swarm I would think.

Also according to the Wik's account of the Echo stones, the Swarm devoured 'hearts of Kings' and it's people.

Here's the quote:
"Memories of the dead... The hearts of kings and the souls of their people... Good and evil... It consumed."
