Compared to other weapons. What is it really good at slicing?
How good is the DPS of the Dread Venom Striker?
If you want something unique but still somewhat effective then I would get it. The charge is very dangerous to use if you don't practice with it (even if you do practice it is still hard to use), I would stay away from that. I found its strength to be just general use, if you run clockworks (the arcade is a place, not the levels!) it is a good sword. Other swords are great for specific problems but DVS is just ok at everything.
The choice really comes down to do you want something effective or fun. I personally go fun (thats why we play the game, right?). DVS and triglav are some of the most amazing swords, not because they are good but because they offer something new. The DPS of the sword is not the greatest (still the best of normal swords) but is still subpar compared to others.
@Bopp: The DVS is one of the most effective swords at hurting large, knockback-resistant enemies. It's not a good sword to TAKE aggro with (except for turrets), but it a very good support weapon with the fairly decent poison chance it presents.
That's what I've found from my uses of it. That and it's the highest DPS sword to Vana's mask apart from the hammer, though I think they may be quite close to being tied there.
DVS is good at Vanaduke Mask, and that's about it. For the rest, using any non-normal sword against weak target will outdamage DVS.
Lancer Knightz data confirm that, with 433 for DVS against 477 for DA on Constructs, just to take an example.
"The DVS is one of the most effective swords at hurting large, knockback-resistant enemies."
Why would it ? Any 3 swing sword will largely outdamage it.
Unfortunately, there really isn't any way of getting around the fact that functionally, it's pretty bad.
The sword is normal damage, and although it gets poison, its combo is ridiculously long and has poor interrupting power, especially on the charge (WHB at least gets good interrupting power on its charge, whereas DVS only gets it on the last stroke). The sword also has quite a bit of knockback, meaning you're liable to push smaller enemies out of the way of your sword swings.
The only thing I can effectively charge up on is Vanaduke's mask, and maybe turrets if I don't mind the odds of possibly getting a bullet to the face because the charge took so long and didn't complete in time. And in the latter case, there are better options.
Tis such fun to play with,
Thats a reason in itself.
I love using all the absolutely stupid and and most silly weapons,
Their so much fun to play with...
Idk...
Malsvir-Branea, there are far better swords for damaging knockback-resistant enemies. As Fradow mentioned, a Brandish can do 628 DPS. Here is the DPS of Warmaster Rocket Hammer against knockback-resistant enemies when using complete combos (30 of them per minute):
* undead or construct: 733
* fiend or slime: 519
* beast or gremlin: 122
Here's the DPS of WRH when canceling after the second stroke (based on 48 such almost-combos per minute):
* undead or construct: 850
* fiend or slime: 574
* beast or gremlin: 142
The poison on DVS is nice, but it doesn't make up for this huge DPS deficit (except against beasts and gremlins of course).
DVS vs WHB
Sure poison is nice but with WHB you get attack canceling and they have the same DPS.
DVS is a favorite of mine but it stinks, turn away from it now and visit it after you have nearly forgotten it existed.
@Bopp and @Fradow
That's why I see it as a support sword.
@Bella-Donna
DVS also attack cancels. You have to hit the last hit and most of the other ones, though. (I've used it on a lot of enemies to come to this conclusion, though I use it on maximum damage.)
@Malsvir-Branea:
Having both, they both cancel attacks, but WHB does it more so than DVS. With DVS you have to shield more often which interupts your combos while it's less of a problem with WHB due to how often it interrupts. If DVS canceled as much as WHB I would have no complaints about DVS, but for now, it's WHB time.
Compare charges. WHB Interrupts on pretty much every attack, DVS. the last one if your lucky enough not to get hit prior to it and they just then attack, and sometimes not even then.
I have a wild hunting blade, but only because I misread the damage of the DVS (I thought it was elemental /facepalm).
it is a good blade, but since it doesn't deal huge damage (in one hit, I deal 130 damage), and it charges forward of 4 blocks, it's not recommanded if you don't know when to stop attacking and run. also, the charge is powerful, but you can't use it in normal situations. but for the last attack, you can actually cancel it by shielding or attacking. since the second one is suicide, I prefer shielding.
Take a look at the Lancer Knightz data on combos and charges per minute. They compute the combo DPS at 433. The charge DPS is 18 * 1080 / 60 = 324.
In the part of my sword guide where I opine about the purpose or strength of each sword, I can't come up with one for DVS (or WHB). It's just not great. But it's very fun.
