So, I figured since we had a book thread, a music thread would be pretty chill too.

Just post the music you like! The genre, artists, lyrics(clean), etc.

Feel free to discuss what you like about your music or another's music, but no bashing someone else's music. Respect those of the forum.

Anyhow, go for it!

I listen to a lot of varied music, and I find that I can enjoy all genres as long as I find the song good (I like to think that there are no bad genres, only bad artists).

I like way too much music to list it all, but I guess I'll throw in some songs from various genres that I enjoy.

Eluvium with Radio Ballet. (Classical)

Sleep Dealer with Point Of No Return. (Classical-ish)

Aberdeen City with Pretty Pet. (Indie-rock. One of my favourites, has an awesome physics test in Crysis as "music video" in that link.)

Neutral Milk Hotel with King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1. (Folk-rock)

Emancipator with First Snow. (Trip-hop)

Sea Wolf with You're A Wolf. (Alt.-rock)

Animal Collective with Today's Supernatural. (Experimental)

Hmhm. I have heard a lot of the bands you listed up there, Immortous, and yes, Emancipator has some pretty nice tunes. Same with The Glitch Mob. Hehe.

I rarely find any rap or hip-hop that I like though, but I know there are songs from those genres I like too. I remember I used to listen to Fort Minor for a period, and every once in a while I play some of their songs. Right now, I got so much music that there are albums/songs I still haven't listened to. Me and a friend of mine swapped music that we had so that he got everything he wanted from my library, and vice versa. Let's just say that he has ridiculous amounts of music and we pretty much got the same universal taste.

So now... I have a music library of over 12,000 songs...

"I guess it depends on my mood." -Iamnoone

Feeling with you on that one. Mood usually determines what I feel like listening to. Even though I know I have totally awesome, fast-paced, hard hitting songs by, for example, The Glitch Mob which has been mentioned here a couple of times now, I won't listen to them if I'm not in the mood for it.

"O_O 12,000.......oh and The Glitch Mob is a fav artist of mine! Isn't Fort Minor the rapper from Linkin Park?" -Immortous

Oh, a favourite of yours? Well, I'll recommend you this, and this, since I think they resemble The Glitch Mob in some ways. Also, I really enjoy listening to them while playing Hawken (fast-paced FPS where you play as giant robots), it just fits so well that they should have just used The Glitch Mob as their soundtrack.

And I'm not sure about the rappers in Fort Minor, never really checked that, but I think that Eminem guy was one of them? I don't even know if they're still active.

Oh yeah definitely. Most of my music taste comes from whether or not I can connect with the music and really feel something. If I don't, then you probably won't catch me listening to it again!

@Weedy- Both those songs were pretty good. I especially liked the second one!(Do you have a fetish with wolves??) Have you heard of Blackmill? Beacuse they're very similar. Here are a couple of their songs: 1, 2. And here's a random song you might like by Family Force 5. *

Beyonce
Linkin Park
Anything and everything country...Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Hunter Hayes...
Movie Soundtracks...LoTR (epic music), Star Wars...
Sometimes I just tune into a radio station or listen to podcasts.
this is just some of what I listen to, but I'm too lazy to type up/remember everything.

@Art- "When I was....a young boy, my father...took me into the city....to see a marching band" =P. That song has amazing drumming in it lol. I bet Bob(old drummer) had fun recording it.
~
@Hero- Oh yeah, Metallica has some great stuff. I'm not sure what radio stations those are, since I'm from another part of the world/(country?), but I have an alternative station, 102.1 KDGE(The Edge), and a plain rock station, 97.1 KEGL(The Eagle). And then the mainstream stations of course.
~
@Alzalea- That's a wide variety there! Skillet is a fav of mine, and TFK is amazing too. And Linkin Park lol. And yeah, when the song stuck in your head is one you hate, it's gonna be a looong day. I completely forgot about movie soundtracks though!!!
~
@Everyone- Okay, now that Alzalea just reminded me(^), are there any movie soundtracks yall like? I'm a huge fan of Hans Zimmer's work. He composed the soundtracks for Inception, The Pirates of the Carribean, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and even classic Disney stuff like The Lion King. Go look him up! And I also love the soundtrack from LOTR. Soooo good.

Not. Even. Close.
Yeah. Tested up against the 1$ Apple earbuds... Although the bass on the buds are almost non-existant (which might be better considering the Beats' incredibly muddy bass that will make you go deaf after a year of use (figuratively)) they actually either beat or match the Beats on all other points... That's what people get for buying a headset made by someone who calls himself a doctor.

"i bought a pair of Koss Portapro ($40) as my first "real headphones" and they were very good to me (for like a year) until they broke recently. i can always get them repaired for free but i was looking to upgrade anyway." -Sr-Gravity

Yeah. The Koss Portapros are good, and give very, very good sound for their price, but they're EXTREMELY fragile (which, I guess, is why they come with a lifetime warranty). The first pair I had lasted like a year and a half, which was alright seeing as they were getting worn anyway, but after that it just got completely ridiculous... Had 4-5 of them break during a one year period. So yeah, I'd naturally say that you might as well upgrade.

"probably ATH-M50s or Grado SR80i." -Sr-Gravity

Ooo, I remember looking at some Grados two months ago or something while I was looking for some new headphones. Got really skeptical to open headphones though. Not exactly what you'd want for commuting and such, and modding them to sealed didn't really seem like a viable option seeing as it might mess up the sound. Although the whole modding concept seemed like hell'a fun. Here's a students story of how he modded his to become an awesome pair of Grado SR225i's, or you could just skip right to the review.

The M50s seem good. I suggest you read around on this site (assuming you don't know about it) if you haven't decided entirely yet. That site helped me a lot when I was looking for some new cans, has some very good reviews by a dedicated audio guy.

yeah, thanks, weedalot. i didn't know beats were that bad and i've tried them out myself and everything (i love the way they're designed though). damn. yeah i read some reviews, that looks like a pretty cool site, reviewers seem to know what they're doing, i've been using http://www.head-fi.org/ for headphone related things. commuting won't be a problem i just drive myself everywhere and it's only half legal to wear headphones while driving in florida (only one earbud allowed). most buying guides say open ear headphones are better for a "natural sound" and that's what i'm used to with the koss portapros. modding seems like a ton of fun though i'm terrible with DIY stuff and probably just get frustrated and quit and end up with a pair of mangled headphones. i'll probably go with the grado sr60i, seems like a good buy.

Oh. You're right. Some things missing there.

Cleaned.

"i love the way they're designed though" -Sr-Gravity

Yeah, that's probably the main reason they're still being bought (and that PR machineee).

"most buying guides say open ear headphones are better for a "natural sound" and that's what i'm used to with the koss portapros." -Sr-Gravity

Yeah, open pads are best for natural sound, and natural sound leakage. Haha.
Isolation on sealed headphones can easily mess up the sound if it isn't done right though. Gotta be sort of careful when buying something along those lines. That's the reason I discarded the idea of getting Grados, I wouldn't want to waste money just to fail horribly by trying to make some sealed Grados.

"modding seems like a ton of fun though i'm terrible with DIY stuff and probably just get frustrated and quit and end up with a pair of mangled headphones." -Sr-Gravity

If you looked at the students headphones, he mostly just bought pieces that he assembled (though he still had to disassemble it first of course). Probably the most tedious work must have been that headband, freakin' lambskin leather. I've seen people wrap a cloth around the headband, which will probably make it just as comfortable as the leather, but doesn't look half as good of course, hehe. I absolutely love the wood cups, not sure how much of a difference they make when it comes down to sound, I think they're mostly aestethic? O, and here's a nice audioblog I randomly stumbled across just now. So many shiny Grados. Classy.

I think that if I were to get me some Grados, it would have to be with the specific intent of modding them. Especially since I just recently bought these, which are just superb.

@Sr-Gravity/@Weedalot- Yeah people still buy the Beats just because of that "b" painted on the side. It's all for the brand name.
Anyhow, I've never been fluent in the language of headphones and whatnot. What are the benefits of open pads versus sealed ones? And why would buying open pads just to seal them even matter? Why not just buy sealed?

Here are some of the bands I like and one of their songs if anyone is interested.

  • Johnny Cash
  • Voltaire
  • Alice Cooper
  • Judas Priest
  • Dio
  • Ghoultown
  • Twisted Sister
  • Meat Loaf
  • Iron Maiden
  • Halford (lead singer for Judas Priest going solo)

I am not familiar with most bands rolling around in recent years but I remember hearing Black Parade and enjoying it a few years ago.

oh man i love the aesthetics of wood. gives me a vintage 70s feel, like the atari2600 or something.

i think this thread should be more discussion-oriented. like giving a short explanation of why you like the artist or record or whatever.

@flamethunder not sure if you're being ironic about liking that song or w/e, since a lot of people here don't like drake (since he's not "real hip-hop" like immortal technique or macklemore, ugh hate that attitude so much), but i actually really like that song. that production is so good i can forgive the repetitive/trite lyrics. you should listen to this remix, so trippy mane.

I like a variety of music.

I like all the eminem songs, all nickelback songs, many 70-00s music, but I hate country music with a passion. Same with techno and classical music such as like orchestra music and so on.
