I sure would love an explanation as this mostly seems like RNG for the moment, in which case I'll be quite upset as that'd be randomly rewarding some players, or in other words punishing others for no reason.

I'm afraid we're not able to give out more details other than there is no specific trigger to obtain an item, so there's no way for someone to increases their chances.

That is really !@#$ing evil. You're awarding players for nothing. NOTHING. How do you think we who didn't get any passes feel? You're making us suffer! Say 50% of all players got an EP. Bam, they gain what's equivalent of 700 or 1400 ME if all ME would've been used for running. You know how much money can be made with that? You do know. It's 10k per 50 ME. I'm not saying most would actually make that much cash but it's doable, and no matter where you use your EP, it's 10 ME less used for every floor. That is a lot.
Meanwhile, the other 50% misses out on getting to grind more Vanacluck, getting more party hats and of course, trying out the new Compound levels and really, a lot of it. You know why? Because everybody just grinds cake. Well, mostly. You go to ten levels, get maybe 1½ box per day and end of story. Meanwhile, mr. EP can speedrun the fudge out of D1 because he doesn't have to worry about wasting his Mist Energy and thus generate several boxes a day. He also doesn't have to worry a lot about using his Mist Energy on non-cake stuff because he doesn't use his ME on it regardless.

Without someone spending that money you wouldn't reach the endgame that you are so proud of reaching. Priding in something like that is even more embarrassing. Almost as bad as the beggars in the game that want crowns.

Iunno, you tell me how easy it is to buy stuff when you can't legally own a bank card and you have to pay about $20 to get anything on Steam. Actually, I don't even know if that's possible in Sweden.
I'll be honest though, I can buy stuff because my parents are nice. It's pretty damn annoying though because everything I buy online has to go through them. Here's a funny story!
The other week I bought a product online, in my name. Upon picking it up, I was asked by the cashier to show identification.
Identification. I can't even legally have it yet (I did get it though, the cashier was in reality mistaken as you can't require anyone under 18 to have identification in Sweden). Bottom line,
it's not about the money, it's about not being able to do squat yourself.
It was never about the RL money, really. It was about rewarding players for nothing. Or punishing players for nothing. Everything is relative.
Imagine that you have two kids, Paweu. You give one ice-cream and tell the other one that he can go order it online himself. How do you think he feels? Why would his brother get ice-cream while he'd be forced to pay for himself through a system that he might not be able to pay through.

The "someone" spent money to buy OCH for me received CE equivalent, which is just the same as buying CE with irl cash for them as they have been doing. They stay as P2P, getting more CE, I stay as F2P never spent a single centime. What I burnt is only time grinding FSC. You cannot buy time with money.
It is totally fair, why would it be gross. I gave them what they usually receive for paying money. They even make profit for selling OCH higher than it actually is in CE.
I would be proud of being F2P even if I did not have OCH. Would that mean sitting on someone's money bag? No. It is a game feature. You can be F2P. It is what Spiral Knights is and it is free to be proud of something.

However, Like Zeddy, I already had an elevator pass. I'm going to be blunt about this, you just saved me 12 dollars I won't be spending on your game now. Why? because I only spend money on the game now to get a pass. I realize I may be in a minority here, but I had already made the decision that unless I feel excited by whatever promotion we have to wait around for, I wouldn't be buying. (I learned from the lameness of the frosty box slog)

What is of interest to players? PvE player traffic is KoA 99%, always, and the 1% that spend on trying Shadow Lairs. Now, with those new stages maybe some people are testing them in Arcade, but it will still be KoA ad infinitum.

Hmm.. why do you have a forum then? If not to find out what community likes/dislikes about the game? What they like to do in it, what would like to do but are unable due to bugs, you not listening etc? But ok, you like to experiment.. We know that. You almost destroyed the game beacuse of it. As far as I can tell, it's completely random. While I appreciate my new 14 Day Elevator Pass a hell of a lot, it's a shame others were left high and dry.
For those hellbent on trying to find a cause, here's some info about my character:

It's REALLY USEFUL to not bleed mist paying for each elevator... my condolences to those that didn't get one.
