Bechamel's gender
Frankly, this is for generally every Knight character. I'm guessing the gender's determined by whether or not a Knight's wearing steel pigtails.

The Knights are vertebrates of organic structure, resembling short humanoids with dark skin, glowing eyes and stumpy feet. As organic creatures they can suffer from biological imperfection[1] and sickness.[2] They are warm-blooded,[3] have hair,[4] and wear clothes.[5]
Knights can be affected by neurological disruption,[6] are capable of emotions,[7] have various personality traits including those of the anti-social deviation,[8][9] and in some cases, most notably the Arkus incident, can be driven mad.
They take part in recreational activities,[10] have short noses with a sense of smell[11][12][13][14] and need to, or at least enjoy, eating and drinking[15][16][17]; like most vertebrates, they utilize teeth[18] to break down food before digesting it. Some armors and shields double as cooking apparatus, giving the impression that Knights possibly do not have the biological ability to eliminate harmful bacteria in foreign consumables. Knights have a sense of hearing[19] and a sense of touch, with some armors[20][21] designed with comfort in mind and others sacrificing comfort for maximum protection.[22]
Knights do need to breathe[23] although it is unknown what they breathe to survive, or if they can breathe the atmosphere of Cradle.
Although Knights are not fused permanently with their armor,[24] they are never seen without it, and rarely without their weapons. Although knights (or possibly their armor) can carry an incredible amount of mass, they are still slowed down substantially when utilizing heavier armor and weaponry. STRAIGHT FROM WIKI And guessing by the name and how the accesorys on her head are she's intended to be a girl.

I sort of believed he was a guy that attaches the accessories with a scissor onto my armor...
Thomas, the name Bechamel is the name of a sauce. i think it's butter and flour cooked in milk. As for your description of the knights, points for originality. Heh, sarcasm.

Bechamel is referred to a few times with male pronoun.
Tailed Helms are generalized as a female helm, Sallet is the generalized male, and the Pith helm is the non-gender helm.
@Thomas-Smellbo
You could have just linked the page instead of copy pasting my bad imitation of citations with superscript links.

sex is male, gender is debatable, but as long as he has the parts~

haha I like your reaction.
@Bopp - KNIGHTS ARENT ROBOTS!!!

Knights are cyborgs. Part living thing and part robot.

I'm pretty sure they aren't robots, nor cyborgs. I think they are just sentient beings, like humans.

That this is the kind of thing I don't think about, because honestly I don't care and I don't think anyone should. (The Bechamel part, not the "what are knights" part.)

Why do they need mist/crystal energy to revive themselves in the clockworks when they go down? I like the idea of being part machine part humanoid lifeform, its one of the main reasons i started playing this game.

Energy powers our armor. Full explanation on energy: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/69476#comment-583910

AFAIK / am concerned, robots don't have a gender. You think your robot is female because you switch from a helm without pigtails to a helm with pigtails.
The rest of your robot remains the same.
He/She pronouns are likely used to address the masculinity of a robot, not their gender. Bechamel is between the two, which is nothing but normal for robots.

Thanks for that post BTW, it was exactly what i thought energy should be like. I can totally see how it works with the system. However, i am still holding onto my belief that the Knights in this game are Bio-mechanical in nature. This doesn't mean that they can't eat, sleep, or breathe. Just that they have living parts as well as mechanical parts that augment their abilities.
Also Like Hexzyle said, You can think of the armor system as something similar to "Iron Man", where when the suit has no power it shuts down and you cant move, Simply because its too heavy to lift on your own. (now i know there are flaws with this theory, mainly wolver coats and the like.) But that would explain why you cant move your character when your down, until you expend energy to recharge your system or a friend comes over and supplies an infusion of energy to your system.

However, i am still holding onto my belief that the Knights in this game are Bio-mechanical in nature
If you haven't already, take a read through of this. It closely resembles what both of us think of the knights.

Wolver coats aren't necessarily all fur and leather. They could be other, heavier materials underneath too.

no no, I just have a rainbow I make magically appear from my hands

Wait......what about the "dead knights" we see at the end of the Danger Mission, Ghosts in the Machine? They look like they've had their heads unscrewed from their bodies...
Robots don't need gender. Despite our best efforts, we reproduce asexually.
Oops, I've already said too much.
Edit: By the way, this post was a joke on the "what are Spiral Knights" recurring topic.
