When were devilites developed?

I was thinking recently, devilite mechanics are much more complicated than every other enemy. They are the only enemies that truly work together, have buff/support mechanics unique to the sub-family, and also have a much more complex AI. So were they developed first, when OOO thought the game should be more complicated, or last, as the development of complexity and mechanics would naturally improve with time? I'm willing to bet it wasn't in the middle.

Devilites are the best monsters ever! They're so tiny and cute and cuddly, and when they turn into overtimers it's even cuter, and it's so cute when they kill my friends and they beg me for help and I don't help them and just pwn on without the ERMERGERD THEY"RE SO DAMN FLUFFY!

That is an interesting question. Devilites are definitely the most complex enemy, with all of the buffing and group mechanics that you mentioned. Most every other enemy just has that simple charge and attack AI that is so easily exploited.

If I had to guess, it was probably toward the end. The team may have just been experimenting with them, trying out numerous new mechanics such as having the enemies keep their distance, dodging gunfire, and even dodging from the Pitbosses. They probably really fell in love with the silly idea that they had concocted and just built up from there. This probably lends to why the modern look of the Devilites and their stages seems so out of place in comparison to the more dungeon/clockwork punk look the game has going for it.
I really don't want to think that Devilites came first because then that means that OOO squandered all the knowledge of creating advanced enemy AI to make the braindead enemies that we usually fight.

Gorgos are more complex than devilites, I can't predict where they will move.

I would argue that the gremlins also work together in the same way, with gremlin menders able to revive one another.

@contri - They have buggy hitboxes. They'll hit you without "hitting you" and their models don't line up with their hitboxes. Not to mention gorgos re-used the kat death animation.

Apparently they used to be much smarter and more team-oriented during development, but somewhere along the way they decided to make it a bit easier.

I thought gremlins were the smartest initially. source: huntr, AoD 2013

The gremlins actually used to have brutal AI to work together like a balanced MMO team. This sounds really awesome, but they decided to nerf it. There was a leader gremlin that would tank with a hammer while giving orders to the flamethrower and bomber gremlin to take out the knight with the least HP. Of course the healer gremlin would take care of his buddies and would actually be protected by the leader. Ah I can imagine there being a 6 gremlin boss where it had the initial 4 + stealth and trap tactics from the recon gremlin and rocket gremlin lol.

Devlites existed before Spiral Knights. As for their mechanics, I have no idea.
