During the first year of playing SK, I saw a lot of people using Levi blades. Slowly I kept seeing fewer and fewer until missions came out (Which gave out the recipes for free) and I saw more. Then the Lionheart event/GH event came out (Sadly didn't log on during the event but I don't care because already had a Levi.) The event basically killed off Levi blade. I rarely saw one when doing arcade runs or missions. After I came back to SK about a month ago, I haven't really seen a leviathan blade beside myself. I sometimes see people with Lionheart reskin of Levi blade but I'm talking about the actual levi blade. After the big update I would expect to see some people with it but I was wrong. I expected since people got orbs and some of the veteran players didn't know what to do with it so they got the Azure gaurdian set, nitronome, valiance, or leviathan blade. I see more people wearing azure gaurdian as costume and valiances being used but haven't seen a Levi blade since the big update. So I guess no one really uses the leviathan blade anymore? Or its always been that way since most people prefer sealed sword and brandish lines.
Leviathan Blade is dead?
Its not that it sucks its just that people don't know what it is for. Its supposedly a side weapon for gunners and bombers. Or it can be a weapon for crowd controlling. It was my first 5* and I enjoyed it cause its fun killing people in it in LD and I love just bringing it with a blitz in fsc so I can push them away while I charge.
The Leviathan Blade is dead! Long live the Lionheart Honor Blade!
But yeah, it was the brandish buff, not the Homecoming event.
It's because the more time passes, smaller the ratio of noob:vet gets.
By the way, the Azure set is garbage.
But it has one of the best/most fun charges I have used in this game.
I've used only Tempered Calibur, then I upgraded it to CIV but its a Calibur too. The normal attacks are nice, the charge can deal tons of damage and knockback everything. I don't know why is it dead... The Brandishes are powerful (and boring) but that doesn't mean Levi is weak.
We always have a choice.
I cannot confirm or refute that Leviathan is less popular now. The Levi/CIV charge attack is powerful and fun. But people eventually get Fang of Vog, whose charge attack is similar, but far more powerful and fun. So I advise no one to get Levi/CIV.
The Brandishes are powerful (and boring) but that doesn't mean Levi is weak.
We can compare weapons only to each other. When people say that "weapon ____ is strong..." or "weapon ____ is weak...", they implicitly mean "...relative to other weapons". So, if Brandishes, Warmaster Rocket Hammer, Final Flourish, etc. are stronger than Levi, then yes, Levi is mediocre or weak.
I use the Azure set for wild and jelly levels - does the job just fine for the most part except when specific status resists become important.

Also, except if you want sword or gun bonuses (from Skolver or Justifier). Unless you're a hard-core-but-not-too-hard-core bomber, there is simply no practical reason to get Azure Guardian. The slight money saving is not worth the opportunity cost of not getting the armor you want. It is handsome, though.
I sold my Levi a long time ago (vendered it at that). I just wasn't using it. I always had (at least) 2 different elements so I could do at least normal damage to everything. Levi seemed unnecessary, and without a good UV to make it worth selling, I just tossed it to roll a UV on something. It just-so-happened that a few months later I got the Honor Blade. So I guess it all worked out in the end :P
On the Azure Guardian: I made the armor, but only because I wanted to put a Vanguard crest on it...Seemed fitting ya know?
I totally agree with bopp about FOV.
And what does Azure set have that no other piercing set has? A PIXEL of extra defense? Who cares? Royal jelly has stun resist and the entire wolver line has sword bonuses.
Azure might not be "ugly" on its own per se, but like Wolver, I hate the look simply because I'm sick of seeing people with it because they're too lazy to do their own research.
well,i played with tempered a LONG time ago, it was pretty nice knocking back the greavers (screw you, shadow bugs), the normal dmg is a nice one because is for a all-use weapon (you don't need to have 2 diferent weps for each family in the tier). But now, it's so annoying when the new levi users don't control the knockback. Example: healing myself in a corner and a player charged levi, i became trapped and i died (¬¬).
Sadly, i sell it for making a bomb (grav 3*, not so useful) and I lost it. Now I have the Ascended HG and is pretty nice, but with the new update, i can't lvl up it so easy, and the damage compared to my other swords (DTB, blizz, blaze, silent, and even vile striker) is low.
In my opinion, the levi is a nice wep if you know how to control the knockback, but due to the brandish OP status and charge blast and the divine/grand high dmg, is very strange to see it in the clockworks. In my guild, only 1 member uses a levi path weapon. I want to make it, i miss it
I use a Lionheart Honor Blade with CTR low in the unknown passage.
I've been meaning to write a secret litany for when I unsheathe it.
I still use it to one-shot turrets and two-shot lumbers, but the only reason I don't use the Lionheart Honor Blade is because I was on hiatus from SK during the event so I didn't get it. Levi's charge really sends them flying, especially if you hit them at the right angle.
These days though, I'm mostly carrying around a DA and DTB. To heat the latter up to a BTB of course.
I seriously consider making Levi, even though I already have CIV. 0_o
"Why?" Because they're both too OP and I can use CIV vs. Undead and "light" monsters (Gorgos, Silkwings, Kats, Chameleons) and Levi vs. all other enemies.<-I'll be able to deal maximum damage.
^The reason is Calibur's charge attack. It deals a lot of (NormaL) damage when used against a lot of enemies. Okay, but Levi (and even CIV) can't use their charge's full potential - the three swings. Levi usually hits only with the first swing and then knocks back the enemy. The 2nd and the 3rd swing don't have a chance to hit anything. Except cornered monsters (oh, you can't bring a whole crowd next to a corner) and GUN PUPPIES. That means all monsters must become Gun puppies. Levi's charge will become deadly. Imagine... a 360 degree spin, dealing 1200 damage to, let's say 5-6 zombies. (that's 6k damage at least)
"How can a zombie become a Gun puppy? .-." Every enemy can become a Gun puppy by freezing/shocking it. These statuses unlock Calibur's charge full potential.
A FROZEN enemy will take two of the three hits (that means you double the damage), then that enemy will be knocked back. If those two swings aren't enough, check vvv this vvv
A SHOCKED enemy will take ALL THE 3 HITS (3x more damage!). Although shocked enemies can't be knocked back and this can be dangerous... but they're shocked and immobilized, aren't they?
Calibur's charge deals a lot of damage when used against more than two monsters. That means a Storm/Hail driver isn't a good choice for shocking/freezing large crowds ( lol ). But Voltaic Tempest/Shivermist will spread shock/freeze everywhere and then Levi/CIV can blow everything with their charges.
As Bopp said, FoV's charge outdamages Calibur's but I don't have FoV and I can't say if it's more powerful against shocked/frozen monsters (I don't know how many charge swings it will land). But I'm sure Calibur is a better option if you have Fire penalty or fight Beasts/Gremlins :B
Shock only negates knockback for the fraction of a second that it's dealing damage. It doesn't root them to the spot. Good luck taking advantage of that.
I can't knockback anything that gets shocked by my VT... IDK if it's possible with other weapons but my CIV does absolutely no knockback. On both the normal hits and the charge.
Levi and its reskins are fine, if anything they're some of the few perfectly balanced swords in the game. A great deal of weapons in Spiral Knights are hilariously overpowered and skew perceptions of balancing, and this gradual power creep seems to have caused certain people to retroactively view history in a different light. The Brandish line for example was always viable and always extremely good when used by good players, but since the insane buffs in January '12 (Which coincided with the dreadful monster nerfs funnily enough) they've become absurdly good.
Of course a far better example is Blitz Needle, that was always one of, if not the best gun in the game, and has become increasingly more broken everytime handguns as a whole get buffs instead of fixing the weapons that were legitimately underpowered. Sadly once we get to a stage like we'e at now, it becomes essentially impossible to balance properly without just playing into the power creep, lest offending half the player base whom enjoy their extremely powerful weapons (Although that didn't stop them changing shard bombs so who knows, maybe).
Although getting back to the first post, players will gravitate not only to the best weapons but also the most publicized. Notice how Blitz caught on massively around August last year, it didn't recieve a buff, but people start making videos of Vana speedruns and the community at large realized how good it was and copied. A similar effect was observed when Nalrayi used DVS to great effect on Darkfire Vana, and made videos demonstrating alchemer-switching to the larger public. When people see powerful weapons they'll want to use them, and they in turn inspire more people, it's hardly surprising that we see weapons that aren't as powerful -and in some cases simply less flashy- become less popular as a result.
I think the thing that "killed" the levi blade, at least for me is them adding in arsenal stations. I tended to use the levi blade until I could just change my gear to easily match the theme of the every level. I started using it less slowly as I got more weapons (brandish line/pokey weapons ect), but arsenal stations finished it off.
That said, I don't think it's a weak weapon, but there are definitely more attractive options when you don't have to worry about what weapon can carry you all the way through a stratum. I think it's a very good starter weapon until you can build up the rest of your arsenal though.
I'm kinda sad as I don't really use Levi as much as I used to and I'm now a bomber. Miss killing turrets in one charge. Great sword and served me well. But now I have a nitronome which is kinda like Levi with its knockback.
I think the Levi Blade is probably the most useful weapon in the game, mostly because of its charge. You can take out turrets easily, its good for keeping mecha knights away from you while still dealing damage, and you'll almost never get cornered. Its good for compounds because it does normal damage and in some compounds there are lots of different monster types. Also if the arsenal stations get boring you can just take Levi Blade all the way. Anyway, there are few weapons that look better than a massive sword like the levi.
I love my Levi!
I've been using my DVS cause it's so fun to use! Then I started using my Levi again and I fell in love with it again it's so awesome!!!!
There needs to be more Levi users!
The leviathan Blade is my favorite sword, easy to handle and decent damage. I mostly use Voltedge when I'm in parties for the shocking assistance, though.
Honestly, the levi does suck. Unless you are a broke SK thriftshopper, you can afford better 5* swords (every one is better than levi but CIV).
I personally had a levi asi vh, but it SUCKED. The damage was crap, the thing was ugly, and the charge was fun but did crap damage.
Sold it for 6k CE at AH.
Upgraded to FoV ctr high. This thing mows down like every ebemy, except ash tails (its decent there due to split dmg tho). Charge is just plain better, despite the horrible speed.
But seriously, if you have a GF, Voltedge, and a BTB, what do you need the levi for? Crap sword, seriously. If you have evidence or a situation where this sword seriously kicks ***, then lets hear it! Just make sure it does it better than the other swords.
You are just a levithan blade hater :-: Not every sword you get has to be the best.
Well, I would bring a sword of every damage type into arenas and compounds and the unknown passage but then I wouldn't have room for any guns or bombs. Also, I would bring a gun and sword and bomb all of different damage types, but what if I wanted to sword fight something that was resistant to the sword or gun or bomb something that was resistant to my gun or bomb?
^ :(
With all the specialized sets, i dunt rly CE a place for the levi. I had an asi vh one, thinking i would be a total BA with it. Turns out I sucked majorly. Showed that even with asi, it cant compete! :/
I am not particularly fond of any cobalt stuff tbh, but thats just me. If you like it, by all means, use it! Sorta funny charging zombies md attack into other people XxD
FoV does too much dmg to do that, so u can only stun slam them. Self roastibg ftw
"and the charge was fun but did crap damage"
Let's have a look at that statement, shall we?
Damage for every weapon in T3 GTH.
Now, we're obsessed with damage, so I'm going to go off damage max, here.
Leviathan Blade's charge does 459 damage.
Combuster does 646 + 5x158 against neutrals. We add that together and get 1436.
Leviathan Blade's charge will hit three times against frozen, shocked, stationary or cornered enemies. So that's 1377 damage, just about equal to Combuster. Combuster does have, what, 4.5% damage on it? Seems kind of a petty amount to get upset over.
Conversly, in all of the situations where Leviathan Blade will deal its full damage, Combuster won't. A lot of the explosions will simply pass through the enemy or get engulfed by walls.
Lastly, let's not forget Royal Minis. Let's see Acheron outperform Levi against them.
Sure, Fang of Vog is stronger, but it will also set you on fire.
Yeah, try comparing apples to apples next time.
FoV is more like the levi, while combuster only shares the same regular attack pattern.
FoV sets you on fire for a reason. With no bonuses, it does 545 dmg on charge. Now multiple that by three. Oh, sorry. By FOUR.
Kicks the levi out of the water.
Now, if you really want to compare combuster to levi:
Dmg: Combuster is stronger than levi against 4/6 monster types. Obviously stronger on undead and construct, still notably stronger on normal enemies (you didnt account for fire). Combuter wins in damage. Not to mention it looks way cooler.
The only possible times levi outshines combuster is against a jelly oiler turret, and wolvers. Combuster is better against gremlins since it does split dmg and fire, which is quite effective. Plus, getting too close with a charged levi to a gremlin could get you hit by their CTR: double MaX thwack hammer.
That damage table.....Ill do some tests, just to verify those numbers.
You do know gremlins are resistant to fire, right?
And there's no way way you're doing more damage to a red rover with Combuster than Levi blade.
I'm a big fan of Combuster, but even I have to admit that Leviathan's charge kills knockback-resistant enemies quickly. So does Warmaster Rocket Hammer's dash. Against polyps, I often use the latter, even if I have an Acheron equipped, too. Moral: There are times when the attack pattern outweighs the damage type.
I found the cold iron vanquisher a good side weapon in fiend and undead level, pairing it with blitz or polaris is a good addition at some enemies do tend to get close to you(kat and trolljan). T3 Trolljans can be killed easily with one CIV charge attack in solo (3 if 4 players) and I also find CIV a good beast hunting weapon too(save the money for flourish on blitz). So yeah, CIV is good side tool when you are a gunner(me) or a bomber. After all, you can save the money and getting something else while still have a good melee weapon. There will always be a few enemies in a lvl that are resistant to your gun/bomb weapons (a mender in a mech lvl or a construct in a beast lvl) and you will want to have a sword that deals okay damage to them, if that is what you want then you can be sure that levi isn't dead.
Sudaruska > leviathan.
You can use the charge attack on turrets without running into them. It does a ton of damage, and stuns! And you can use it on ANYTHING (and still get max damage) without getting stuck in a corner
I really can't agree with that. Suda is so slow that there's a big chance of you getting hit by something while using it if you're trying to hit a turret. It can often be the turret itself if you don't position yourself and time it well. No matter, Levi should damage about 50% more with a charge in a shorter period of time while also having a shorter charge time if I'm not mistaken as well as higher movement speed when using it.
I mostly use Suda with EV. Now that's something awfully good. It's almost as good as using a Brandish in EV, even if the Brandish is effective.
The leviathan blade (i call it the levi blade :3), it was my first 5* star weapon before i start using the brandish line. During solo in vanaduke i always bring the leviathan-blade so i can kill trojans pretty easily and I still use it today :P
If you guys are just going to dis the weapon that this forum is about then go to another forum and leave... Its not like Levi is the most underpowered weapon ( well one of the most unused but not underpowered...) Levi's charge is great for a lot of things even if the damage sucks... Its a great defense for if your soloing because of the knock back. Almost no other sword has kmockback like Levi.. Its basicly a jack of all trades weapon.
You are mostly right, and yes the knockback is the most useful part of it, but I still think the damage is just fine. If it was elemental then it wouldn't be very useful for decon zones or getting in between a bunch of wolvers and using the charge attack, would it? And if it was piercing, it wouldn't be so awesome against mecha knights or puppies or polyps anymore. Anyway, a shadow blade cant pulverize shadow turrets or painfully smash trojans. Therefore, I think that full normal is the best damage type for it.
me·di·o·cre
adjective
1. of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate
Oldberry is quite right... there are honestly better things to do than complain about (essentially) the side-effects normal damage. No crits... and a slight mechanic change that turns it into a labor of about 10 more brain cells, and suddenly it is worthless? I could ramble all day on the different playstyles, and individual preferences, and the fact that there is no shortage of weapons underused because lolskolverclones; but i would be publicly flogged by half the community, and noone would care, so...
... let's keep it brief: if we want to talk underpowered, why don't we target a CODED imbalance? What about cautery? It is outright worthless even within it's tier and alchemy tree. The thing is awful. Yet somehow we find the nerve to complain simply because a weapon takes a brain to use (Non switch-shot alchemers, magnus, catalyzer, troika, the new shards, insert name of any non needle-launching gun or elemental damage blade here)
What we're saying is that it is better than mediocre. What if you want to bring a gun, sword, and bomb to a shadow lair (or arenas sometimes) and want to be able to bomb AND gun AND slash at ALL of the monsters? Normal damage. (Mist bombs are an exception because they are pretty good against everything and fairly useful even against things that are resistant to them, even though their damage is elemental) Also, I'd like to see you get in the middle of a bunch of wolvers and knock them all away from you with a toothpick, or make mecha knights on ALL sides of you go flying away in one charge with a brandish.
The Leviathan Blade is still very useful, it might be underrated but it's a good first sword that you can get.
If you select a elemental brandish, you will deal more damage to constructs, but less to gremlins, which can be very annoying, since gremlins are some of the stronger monsters.
The charge can be very useful at turrets, trojans and if there are many mobs around you.
So, good sword, underrated because everyone thinks "lol cobalt=useless"
Levi is one of my favorite weapons and also my first 5* gear. I had the 4* version (Ascended Calibur) when i was at the beginning of t2 and it was awesome. And it looks so cool, most badass weapon in the game (in my opinion). And the name is also very cool. If i would somehow get a UV ticket, I'd use it on my Levi. I was at the edge to T3 during the Homecoming event, but i didnt manage to get all 4* gear. So i only have the 3* Honor Blade and Shield, but i think Levi looks better than Honor Blade and also better than Scissor Blades.
I'm actually planning to craft a Levi. So when I go into a a level where there are multiple different enemy types, like an arena, or compounds, I will be ready for them. Plus, the sword does look pretty good.
People only diss Levi because they never tried it, or they're too lazy to make one. I find it as the perfect solution for anyone that wants a melee weapon. Be it a swordsman, gunner, or bomber (I'm all 3. Though My only legit bombs are DR and Shiv). My Levi will always be my first 5* weapon, and always my main melee weapon. The only times I'll switch is is for my Warmaster Hammer in undead levels, and Barbarous Thorn Blade for beasts and fiends.
Heck, just look at it. I got that ASI VH from a FREE triple UV ticket.
When I started Spiral Knights and had a worse pc with more lags I had a Hot Edge as first reason and was pretty happy for this free Calibur.
Back in that time I learned to keep distance to enemies and shoot them down out of a distance - in my opinion there was no better sword than Calibur, later Levitan (first 5 star weapon), to do this since it does not only allow you to deal a massive damage output to trapped enemies but it also gives you a big area between you and your enemies.
This made me a walking emergency revive bearer for my team and effectly remained me running arround with a half life bar all the time because I revived too much.
However, when I got a new pc and I started to play more offense I need the enemies to stay clustered, stay together and not to get bunched away. And since there are no more big groups of Greavers (arena excluded) I used my "5 star Calibur" less and less.
Just as I read this topic I realize that my loadouts usually content a Combuster with Undead Med and a gun.
I stopped using my Calibur after getting that Shock Alchemeter, which serves me very well vs devilities - plus it is a distance weapon.
Though your topic encourages me to play around with Calibur (Levitan) once more and see if I can find a use for it again :)
I could get a Leviathan Blade but due to the radiant drought I probably wont get it. I like the Ascended Calibur more though. Mostly for looks. Plus I got a CTR medium UV on it so adding up the level 10 CTR, I can have a CTR of very high. The second I upgrade it I will be rewarded with:
-3 orbs
-5,000 crowns
-1 CTR VH
-1 cool looking sword (In my opinion anyways.)
-Lot 'o damage
+1 5* item
0i, wats d@t? 5* 1tem? ME NE3DS!
But anyways, I use the Ascended Calibur mostly as a back up sword. If I'm carrying a gunner/bomber layout but want to bring a sword in case things get too close, I'll be glad to throw in a Calibur charge and regain some much needed distance. Plus, normal damage is nice for any back up weapon.
The brandish buff killed the Levi.
