Imagine this: Spiral Knights on the Nintendo 3DS. Using the circle pad to move and buttons to attack/block your way through tons of levels in 3D. They could make offline play available with solo or wireless and scale the dungeons accordingly (group size tier lvl). Now imagine that you could use your play coins (aquired by walking with the system in sleep mode) to get CE, while still having the ability to purchase via card. This game would sell so ridiculously well and so many people would play it. It would open a new page for the 3DS and dominate handheld online gaming. I realize that the chances of this coming to reality are slim to none, but it would be such a smart business move on both Nintendo's part and for Sega/Three Rings.
Guys, please read this and maybe it will get some support!!!!
Well seeing as Snake Eater is coming to it, Splinter Cell is on it, and Ocarina of time is coming, I think they could manage a pretty good port of Spiral Knights on a 3DS cartrige (which has much more capacity than DS). It would be nice if they did away with the weapon binding for the 3D version, but I would still play it with it. The buying wouldn't be hard at all, if the system can handle netflix it should be able to handle a small simple store for CE. Also with Sega already putting games on the DS, the change over from PC would be much smoother and less expensive. Not to mention the crazy things you could do with street pass.
I just researched the 3DS chip, it can hold up to 8GB
Yes, Splinter Cell is on it, yes, those other games are on it, but the all suck compared to the console version.
Spiral Knights would be the same.
Also controls would not work well at all.
Possible, but not likely... [yeah circle pad to move, d pad to aim - or other way around], A to attack, B to shield, L and R to switch weapons, touch the vials on the touchscreen to pick up and A to throw... Y to chat (and keyboard appears on touchscreen), , HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Lol Vlad controls do work!
Lets let them fix the bugs/balance the game/tweak the economy in this platform first before we move on to other things shall we?
People actually bought 3DS's? Its a DS that has a significantly reduced battery life in exchange for shallow 3D gimmicks that work if you hold it in precisely a specific way.
Moving along from my desire to burn people that are rewarding Nintendo for monumentally bad decisions, this would be a pretty meh idea in general. The game requires a pretty solid network connection and punishes severely when you lag. A keyboard is nice for the social aspects, and, being that this is an active MMO style game, would require updates that you couldn't just put on the cartridge. I haven't done enough research to see if compatibility would be an issue or not, but at this stage, with a game which was released very recently, taking a step like trying to license it and make it work on something like a DS when they already have so many other problems is just not something I could forsee happening. I don't know how well you'd be able to do "offline" play with the way gates work, either. This just isn't the right genre or type of game to port in that manner. Really, why not just own a decent laptop and plug a joypad into it. I've done it before, the game doesn't even ask you to configure controls (though you can), you can literally just plug and play.
My 3DS has never gone below 50% battery with the 3D always on and brightness up after hours of gameplay. My DSi battery dies before my 3DS does. The 3DS has a stable enough connection to run netflix and play multiplayer games online, this has been proven. The offline play would work quite well, I'm not even sure why you think it would suck. You are exactly the kind of person that keeps games like this from reaching new platforms. I realize that they are still working out the bugs in spiral knights, but if they started production now it could be done in a year or so. Also I do own a laptop, it's not easy to play with this style of gaming. So beyond the hatin' and misinformed judgements I feel that this would pwn other 3DS releases and take the top spots with OOT and Star Fox.
Let's not turn this cute little post into a big monkey debate over the 3DS.
As a proud owner of a 3DS I've constantly thought of different ways to put computer games or otherwise into the 3DS. I could see SpiralKnights working very well as a DOWNLOADED Nintendo eShop game (As the Nintendo eShop comes out June 9th). This would even save production costs by making it all viral, as it is now (as far as I know).
This however does bring into play the idea of cheap ways to get crowns. If we were allowed to spend PlayCoins to buy CE/CR this would allow for a cheap CHEAP way to gain in-game items not available to others. However, if we did have a completely seperate SpiralKnights server dedicated simply to 3DS functionality, this could work relatively well.
StreetPass could also cause the same problems as above, but could also provide a fun way to play. Such as having little dungeon runs that your StreetPass Mii's go on and earn items for your person. Eventually they level up to the point where they can go on harder dungeons, very much like "FindMii" on the StreetPass Plaza.
Having a 3DS also allows people to meet each other face to face and trade items or go into the Clockworks. Playing dungeons right next to each other can remove the need for third-party software for voice chat and would get rid of the need to text chat, not to mention the person to person contact we all need every now and again.
In short, there are lots of benefits to having this ported to the 3DS, but this early in development would be problematic and requires much more thought. I would, and I can safely bet a lot of others would, love to see this game on a portable handheld such as the 3DS, 3D functional or not (I barely ever use the 3D functionality).
Thanks for reading my extremely long post (if you did).
I could see this working, but the game would have to change around a bit.
If this was a game you could carry with you whenever, the energy system would have to be removed/reworked. No one is going to buy a DS game they can only play 2 hours a day.
I would like to see more than just Haven and the Clockworks. It seems strange to me that there's only one town on the planet. Maybe a few miles over there is a different entrance? So overworld exploration in addition to Clockworks exploration. Overworld would also be 'solo' mode, so you could play without internet connection.
Guys.
The whole game is written in Java. Unless the 3DS suddenly supports Java, or someone makes an emulator that can run Java on the 3DS without any hiccups, this is nothing more than a pipedream.
Not that I'd mind a portable SK.
How long does the average person spend playing Spiral Knights?
Or Farmville?
Or Ikariam?
Or any other Browser game?
That's how they make their money. Getting you to play more, by buying the ability to play more.
I play SK for more than 2 hours usually. Also, why would this have to be downloaded? Why wouldn't they put it in a cartridge? @LoneKnight they would have to convert it over to be playable on the 3DS, but Sega has the ability to do so. I like the idea of overworld single player, that sounds cool.
The problem with cartridges is that they take more money to manufacture, along with just not being needed. Having it downloadable will take up more time and bandwidth although.
Personally, I'd love it to be on a cartridge, I'm just trying to argue both points to the best of my very limited ability.
I didnt even know people actually bought those things. I thought they were just for people to look at in stores.
Your input is appreciated! We will evaluate your input and respond with a well thought out response within a reasonable time frame!
I sure like the idea of a 3DS game of Spiral Knights. However, I do not agree with it being a MMO. Plus there would be no point in buying a 3DS game, when you have to pay for the features (Like CE and stuff) anyway.
But I do think that Spiral Knights for the 3DS should be a separate game from its console version. Like for example, it would be nice if the game was focused more on single player/story driven based instead. I would really like to see that to happen! 3-Rings very own version of a Zelda game. But again, it is their OWN version.
I think it should incorporate some multiplayer in it too, for some exclusive local (or possibly online) co-op in missions or mini-games that you can't get from the PC version. Since it WOULD be a exclusive multiplayer mini-game or something.
I enjoy the Spiral Knights steam-punk fantasy style theme, but the story of this game is very shallow. No engaging characters, no plot development or anything! It gives this me this feeling that there is no role-playing involved.
Again, I think it would be a great idea for 3-Rings to create a separate and unique Spiral Knights game for the 3DS that is focused more towards plot and character development! It would be different than its predecessor.
why would you make an dummy half arse 3ds version of the game when you can simply make it an iphone / ipad game with on the fly internet support via wifi/3g?
under ios, the business model doesnt have to change at all. and the delivery fee is much cheaper for ios apps even with the extremely cheap charge on them. its also much easier to integrate the game into andoid systems that way.
Porting the game to devices such as the Ipod/Iphone/Android would create even more complications with the whole touch screen controls problem.
Now Matoro has said what I was thinking but never actually said, seeing as I've seen it first hand. My sister has long played Club Penguin and still does. For those of you who don't know, Club Penguin is an MMO game played in browser.

She bought these games once they came out and has beat them both multiple times. She enjoys the extra fun they allow. Despite them not being multiplayer at all (although they do allow an account to account money bonus).
...
how the hell is touchscreen control a problem? SK already has mouse control and it's basically the same! Hell, they could just use Phantom Hourglass or whatever that train zelda was called controls.
SK would work well using the DS Zelda controls. L/R/touchpad to switch weapons, and holding the stylus down to charge. And about the iPone/Droid... I dunno, i don't think I'd like it as much. I have no clue why, I think it's just because I prefer handhelds to phone apps...aaand I would have to get a smartphone XD
Okay so due to the forums terrible login problems, my post was not saved. Here I go again from the best of my memory...

Mouse and touchscreen are completely different! The mouse can move where ever need be as long as you have the space to move it. On a touch screen, you are restricted to simply the screen, not to mention the touchscreen doesn't have two buttons (or more) on it to use as quick access commands.
The touchscreen on ipod's are also heat screens. Touch alone will not activate them, unlike the DS's touchscreen. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks work very well with their play style because the game is centered around the playing style, not the other way around. It's much harder to adapt a new playing style to a old game than it is to make a new game for a new playing style.
Seeing as I'm currently playing Spirit Tracks right now, I can understand ways that it could be effective, however it brings up many problems such as the limited amount of space for commands.
We would need a space to tap/slice/hold to use potions.
We would need a space to tap/slice/hold to click on people.
We would need a space to tap/slice/hold to open inventory and other windows.
We would need a space for the minimap.
We would need a space for the health bar.
We would need a space for the enemies for you to tap/slice/hold onto attack them, without tap/slice/hold-ing onto anything else.
Now I understand this could actually put people off of Spiral Knights on handheld's, but you have to remember that the DS has TWO screens. The top could hold the Minimap, healthbar, and player names in the dungeon (this would be great seeing as I continually die from accidentally clicking on party member's names). Tapping could be reserved for buttons rarely used, as to save space on the screen for watching.
The 3DS also has the circle pad, allowing for a more realistic play style. I used to play with a PS3 controller and found it excessively fun (although gave it up because of computer problems). Circle pads feel more realistic and are just more fun all around compared to the WASD or Arrow Keys.
Although if we went back to the Legend of Zelda play style, we could look around using the touch screen (the same way as Spirit Tracks), and move with the circle pad (or remap for lefties).
All in all, it would take some time to work out and get a feeling to play with, but doing all this on a small Ipod screen (even a Ipad) would be extremely difficult.
I think this is a great idea! I think it would be very fun to play Spiral Knights in 3D, no matter how shallow.
The 3DS, in my opinion, definitely has to capacity and functionality to handle the game.
I think it would be a chance for the 3DS to prove what it can do.
I thought this would be an amazing idea before I even found this forum. Honestly the limitations of computers are anoying. You have to upgrade your pc every month, it seems like, to keep playing modern games. The Nintendo 3DS has the power and online connectivity to easily run Spiral Knights. The cartridges can hold up to 8gb but for now they are only being made in 2gb size. That's still enough for this game, believe me. I own a 3DS and have played Ocarina of Time. The updates are impressive and the game is certainly larger and better quality than Spiral Knights. Honestly who cares if there's a second server, most games have around 20 servers! Two is hardly anything! The controls would be very comfortable and the game would run smoothly without any trouble. Nit to mention that game add ons could be stored on an SD card. Then add local wireless, single player, and Street Pass functions. The system also has a mic so voice chat is possible and even video chat could be implimented! Sega seems real interested in the Nintendo 3DS and this would be perfect title for the system!
I don't like this idea at all. It's WAAAY too complicated with the complex graphics and control issues and Java issues and GB needed and whatever, and besides, almost everyone I know plays POKEMON. How are you going to compete with big games like that?
I want SK to stay an online game. An Xbox Live version, MAYBE. But I don't think a Nintendo version of SK will work out. Even if it does, I'm not sure it will significantly boost SK recognition/number of players anyway.
Suppose it does come. Would the online SK players of now think it'll be a rip-off of the actual thing? Even though it does sell, i can't see how the battery can take it, with being online all the time, unless there is an of-line option.
I like the idea and all, but I have very little hope in this actually happening.
at all.
The idea of putting SK to the 3ds layout would require some thought yeah, but it isn't exactly a hard thing to do, you'd just have to move some things around is all. And there's been mmo's on handhelds before (Phantasy Star was on PSP, and that game was only about 2 gigs, had online support, a ton of stuff, dlc, etc etc) so I believe it's possible.
However, unless I can link my accounts online to my account on the DS, I wouldn't touch a 3ds SK - I am not starting over.
I just can't see this happening - if it did though, it'd definitely be on my buy list. Who doesn't want more SK?
- edit -
/sarcasm/ Really though, with the line-up of games for the 3DS right now, HOW WILL I EVER HAVE TIME FOR SK? /end sarcasm/
I support this on a PS3.
Five words.
Good luck, and have fun.
Without a second control stick the game would be ridiculously hard to play unless you're some kind phenom at adjusting to tricky controls, because believe me, it will be. It would be interesting to see, though, I must admit, but considering how hard it would be to control your character I'm better off playing on the computer, especially because I can also chat with friends through Steam while I do so.
Another point to bring up, unless you can pick it up from the shelf and walk away with it for free I wouldn't get it, as you can pick up the game on your computer for free, unless it comes with a Crystal Energy pack to make up for the price you would have to pay for it. Integrating accounts would also be a must, otherwise it's just going to be a game for new players.
I'd bet you five bucks worth of Crystal Energy that they would launch a special offer alongside a handheld release that you can only obtain if you bought the game for the console and played it.
(Possible Bump) It could work if you guys used the new "Circle Pad Pro" with it... And besides, that's only 19 bucks... It should be packaged with it!
Also, 3DS games can get updates DLC. Why not do it, OOO? You're a part of Sega, so it's not like Nintendo would hav a hard time accepting the idea for an awesome family-friendly eshop game! (Since, of course, it would probably be $5, not a full $40 game. :P)
That's a heck of a cool idea, I have to say. The question is, would the 3DS Spiral Knights and the computer Spiral Knights be able to use the same account, and would data transfer between the two? Having to get up to tier 3 all over again would be less than ideal.
But the buying would be difficult. Granted it would sell well, but they would have to lift the bound rule and it would have to run on a different server. So there would be two spiral knights. And Spiral knights has alot of information.. Do you know how much information one DS chip can hold?
