Note: this is part of a new series of levels that I will post. If you have level ideas, please post them, I might use them. Most, but not all of, the details for each level will be posted. However, if you (The Spiral Knights Team) would like to use them, feel free to change anything. These ideas are more for use in brainstorming, than in-game, but they could work for either. With that said, please enjoy!

Level Name:
Midnightmaelstrom Tower

Variety Names:
Thunderstorm
City Fire
Cold Hazard
Venom Control

Description:
Most of the Almirian cities were taken by Vanaduke's curse, the citizens forced to forever wander the streets even after death. These strange cities, however, seem to be locked in eternal peace. A fake night sky hangs over slowing crumbling ruins. But still, enemies lurk. Beasts and Gremlins roam free, attacking any that get too close to the whitewashed castle walls.

Variety Details:
Thunderstorm, City Fire, Cold Hazard, and Venom Control:

All of the levels have the same basic layout, but are just different status themes. For the layout, the knights begin outside of a massive castle, soon entering in. During the level, they climb upwards, further and further towards the center of the tower, at which is the lift, on the highest tower. Gremlin and Beast monsters run unchallenged, as well as a handful of constructs. An arena room is right before the lift down, with three waves, ending with an Almirian Royal Guard. As a final note, these levels only appear in Tier 2 and 3.

So, tell me what you think, giving me ideas, share your own, or just bump this thread below!

I make you black, bluue and red all over

I get that you chose beast and gremlin because they are both resistant to the same damage type, but the way you described the level seems like there should at least be undead here. However, since there should be at least 2 monster types (doesn't have to be, but that would be nice), and undead+fiend combo is too overused, I guess it's ok. Or you could go with undead+gremlin, since one is weak to elemental and the other is resistant to it.

Gremlins could have a new monster type that are like the thwackers, but can deal curse status with their spin attack (low chance). Carnavons should also spawn in certain pre-set areas. This would give the levels a more "cursed" feeling and more greatly link it to its Almirian lore.

There could also be a new undead monster type: The Almirian Guard (not to be confused with the Almirian Royal Guard). This new monster would function similar to the Almirian crusaders in that they are the same size and move similarly, but they would have a sword and shield instead of a lance and shield (possibly give them a FoV shaped sword, or a new sword that is newly designed just for them). The only real difference between them and Crusaders is that they would have a 3-hit sword combo for a normal attack, and their charge would be a single sword blast (exactly like the 4* avenger). They would also look exactly like the SL Almirian Crusader Armor set with the shield included. These monsters could serve as the guards to the cursed city forever protecting their home, thus fitting perfectly into the lore you created. There would be a status version for every variety of floors you created, with the difference in each's appearance being the color of the sword and the Guard's own personal color.

Payout for a single floor should be slightly less than it's tiered boss equivalent, and only 2 floors can occur in a row (make a layout that would serve as the boss floor for the themed floors, much like Briar Bone Barrage for the Concrete Jungle stages). The theme should appear in any undead stratum besides T1, and only in the stratum just before the next sub-town.

TL;DR
A new undead and gremlin monster, and change the 2 monster types to undead and gremlin. Possible to be cursed in this floor from monsters, but small chance.

P.S. Sorry it took me so long to respond to this thread. I had fully intended to post on the day you first made it, but I kinda forgot :P

I like the way you think, doctor sir.

Kinda the point is that it FEELS like an undead level, but it isn't, so I understand what your saying, but I don't think you understand the point of the level. The level is simply meant to be another level, but unique in the fact that it feels like a contradiction. Lastly, as I've said before, I feel like new monsters are fun, but unrequired. Does that make sense/do you agree? I'm not saying your wrong, but simply stating why I made the level like I did.

Another way of stating it...

The levels are Almirian areas that (for the most part) managed to avoid the curse and decimation caused by Vanaduke. Simply, they were destroyed by time.

I get you point about the new monsters. I just thought I'd give it a try to see if others liked it. And I just personally really liked the undead family, which is mostly why I suggested to switch from gremlin+beast.

And yea, if the city was destroyed by time instead of by Vanaduke's curse, then my curse idea kinda falls apart...

Anyways, if you like undead...

It should note worthy that my next level idea will be posted some time, say, next week? And, it will include undead as a main monster.

Huh

I haven't seen a beast + gremlin stage yet. I like it! Definitely should have more than one layout though,a scarlet fortress would be so boring if it only had one layout.

Alright! Someone else!

I agree with you now that I look at it. On the other hand, if it was randomly generated layout, like Candlestick... hmm...

But as I said, these are for coming up with better ideas more than anything else. Thanks for the feedback, though!

Or

Make 4 levels, then variations based off of them. Label them with Roman numerals.

...Just like much every other dual-type level.

@Sandwich

your long waited reply...
Yes, that could also work, but I'm not going to change it after it's posted. Anything else?

I have news!

I'll be posting a new level idea shortly, once I have time to rack my mind for details. (And shortly means you probably won't see this before I post the new one.)

Just a little question...

What are those Gremlins up to in those floors? Usually, the Gremlins have some sort of agenda whenever they pop out in a place that isn't a Clockworks Tunnel or Arena. Like in the Jigsaw Valley where they're chopping down trees or the Deconstruction Zones where they're ripping a floor apart for spare bits and pieces. Are they using those old Almirian city fragments as some sort of staging area?

This would be very interesting to see

This would be very interesting to see, it should be a hard level(For the love of god not like that Grinchlin Assault mission) and quite profitable, as it might change the game a bit instead of good 'ol boring FSC

Alright, replies!

@Gasguzzler Gremlins are interested in causing havoc to the knights. Ruins like these give them a tactical advantage. (To be honest, hadn't really crossed my mind, but I like challenging questions!)

@Xylosha I'll take that as a +1. =)

Cool.:D

Tactical advantage? Maybe it is. They could basically try to turn those old Almirian castles into makeshift mobile fortresses (or at least supply stashes) by manipulating a couple of gears to move the castle/city fragment into whatever they need to attack. While maybe giving it a few nasty upgrades.

I like the way you think, doctor sir.

you are brilliant. Honestly.

Anyways, I love that idea. Maybe a mission idea for these levels? Or these could be a danger mission area? A trap laid by gremlins.

Like I said, nothing that I post is set in stone. It is for, as you are, throwing the thought around. ty! =)
