Today I finally got around to downloading and using Spiral Spy, and I would like a question to be answered; am I allowed to post my scenes on the forums? What I would like to do is create models for new monsters/weapons and post them next to my ideas on the forums suggestions section, but is it against the ToS to post these models on the SK main site? I know people have other sites for this, but is it wrong to post them on the main site, since it is using the game files and OOO doesn't seem to take kindly to people showing unreleased content (I may inadvertently show model parts for things that have not yet been released in the game).
Question about using Spiral Spy on the forums
as long as you don't post any spoilers on the forums, you are fine. I remember someone posted a potential boss using SS, so SS itself is not a problem.
Ok, so what if I added parts of new content (not knowing it was new) to my models, and didn't claim that they were new (because I didn't know).
Like, for instance, I used the model for an unreleased weapon and added it to a player model and called the entire thing my new monster idea. Of course I would know if the weapon was new or not, but just for horrible example's sake.
Or I used one of the parts of a monster (such as the shield on the Carnavons, but from a new monster) altered it a bit and called it a new gear piece.
Basically, I'm only sung part of the new content, changing it's purpose/name and calling it my own. Would that be bad?
Give credit to the staff and let them know beforehand. After all it's not right to take something of someones, make it fancy, then claim it's all your work. (From osu! forums skinning tutorial)
Well of course, I already claim that all rights are given to OOO since they made all the models I'll be using, but I mean that the way these parts were arranged were my original idea. As in, I'm not going to take something that is already fully built in the SK file and just say I did it. But I WILL take parts of already built models and put them together in a way that was not previously shown, and call that mine.
Also, as stated in the ToS, anything posted in these forums are automatically property of OOO anyway and I can't claim copyright or anything like that.
seeing how strict is OOO on spoilers, it may be. I advise you to just not take parts of content you havent seen/ searched on before.
Ok, I guess that's good enough. I'll just do that.
https://github.com/threerings
Here you can find almost all parts to make spiralspy. For example https://github.com/threerings/clyde/blob/master/core/src/main/java/com/t... it is the main program.
But I'm not releasing spoilers, I'm only showing things that are already in-game. And anything I make I am claiming right now to give to OOO to use however they see fit, or not at all if that is what they choose. So I'm not taking anything away from OOO, I'm giving back to them. It's not like I'm using the game files to make a new came and call it my own or anything, I'm just re-arranging the models into a new configuration to give OOO new ideas for their game.
@Iamnoone: It sounds like you are suggesting OOO doesn't even know about Spiral Spy and if they did they would disapprove.
Edit: @Masterreeve: Why don't you just send OOO a support mail and ask them directly? Although admittedly, they may completely misunderstand what you are asking no matter how simple you make it as they have done to me before.
Iamnoone, as I have already posted, someone posted screenshots of SS in the forums already. those screenies should be still there (it were of gigant howlizers and such, but I don't remember the name of the suggestion) and I don't remember anything about not using SS itself but not to use it to post spoilers.
what you posted about not altering game files is irrelevant. SS doesn't do that. it merely reads them.
If they were banned from it, the GM's would've taken the pics down and said not to do that. If anything, I think OOO is turning a blind's eye and letting us use Spiral Spy because there have been no instances where any official OOO staff has said anything in regard to disapproving of Spiral Spy in itself.
@Iamnoone: You seemed to imply it because you were saying OOO doesn't like Spiral Spy. Obviously they haven't done anything to try to stop us from using it, so if what you said were true, then it would seem they didn't even know about it.
it kept posting after the pics were up, is that proof enough?
Pretty sure SpiralSpy is legal. It just uses the open source libraries that SK uses and it doesn't come with any copyrighted resources itself, it just reads whatever you tell it to open. If that was illegal, so would MS Word be because it's possible to quote Harry Potter in it.
No not really
I can't say I know laws for stuff like this and it probably varies from country to country but I believe there's a difference between reading data presented to you and reading data intentionally hidden from you. But no matter, it's probably legal in the US. The government gets away with it, after all ;)
no, your tax return is something protected by the privacy law. and hacking into a website isn't something good.
a major proof against your argument is that we are still discussing and that SS updates and such are through this website. do you really think that they wouldn't at least try to stop us from using it?
are you telling me they don't? for the same reasons you said, they could not have the time or resources to make it part of the official SK. to me, they didn't give a sign that it isn't legit to use SS itself, but to use it to take spoilers it is; but it's like downloading the test server client and searching through files.
I haven't seen that. Now I have. Either way, I haven't heard of any arresting of people in the NSA and such. Same goes for what's happening here in Sweden. No matter, let's not drift further off topic, shall we?
@Iamnoone
OOO knows about Spiral Spy and its creator. If they wanted it to be removed or anything, they would have contacted him long time ago.
I even recall a GM talking about it. Too lazy to search for that post, though.
@Masterreeve
As long as you avoid spoilers, there shouldn't be any problems. If it were against the rules, why wasn't this removed yet?
ETA: Almost forgot! I even made these. Never got a warning nor anything.
I'll repeat myself: As long a you don't post spoilers, you should be safe.
IIRC, a GM said awhile back that it's fine as long as you do not include spoilers. Pretty sure it was Eury.
@Iamnoone: I just sent a support request asking this specifically: "Is using Spiral Spy against the Terms or Service? To what extent can one use Spiral Spy before it becomes against Terms of Service?" This was the reply:
"Greetings,
We do not allow players to use Spiral Spy to post spoilers anywhere on the
internet, nor do we allow players to upload Spiral Spy images on our Wiki. Any
attempt to modify or disassemble Spiral Knights in any shape or form is
against the Terms of Service. If you do decide to use a third-party program to
peek into the game files, please keep in mind that whatever happens to your
computer as a result of using the program will be your responsibility.
You can find this information in the Restrictions section of our Terms of
Service here: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Terms_of_Service#6._Restrictions
Best wishes,
- Atalanta"
I hope this confirms what we have been saying to you.
Spiral Knights Spiral Spy should be approve... :/
It's very hard to make Custom stuffs without modify stuffs... :(
If ONLY 3O hire more Developers...Then it's possible to make an Spiral Studio like Sourcefilm maker...
Because I've always dream to be an Animator... :(
I guess so. It is probably best to post on another site. (Going by another forums Terms of Service). Though it would kinda make sense for these forums to have a ( Spoilerbox ) code
