People should care more about SK

I think Spiral Knights should have more players since it's free to play. I can't see how some people don't like this game, it has everything a standard gamer would want: Original art concept, challenging difficulty, co-operative missions, an awesome trading system, character customization and an awesome story, including a lot of other features. Even paid coins (CE) can be obtained by exchanging normal coins (CR). I'm saying this again but I seriously don't see how some people don't like this game. Someone please explain me! Is there a bad thing about SK that I'm not seeing? I have over 500€ in steam games and I still prefer SK to many other games.

Thanks Three Rings for SK (and Bang Howdy :D)

Frandons

I have no mouth and I need to scream

Well for starters

There's limited optimal gear, and even at this, 2/3rds of them are clones.
Minimal permanent endgame content for veterans. Yeah we can talk about sl's and arcade but at the end of the day its reskinned bosses.
Some people just don't like the gui
Bombers get shafted up the yin yang, so it really feels like swords, gunslingers, and hybrids. No im not saying bombers don't exist.

Most of it comes down to people almost never liking change that's good in their view.

By the way, the people you see complaining and whining do care for the game. Its the reason why they're voicing their complaints in the first place because they see potential in this game but want to make it better, not settle for something that's just ok.

Well I've said my bit, gonna go hop on mabinogi. Cheers.

A lot of people appear to be

A lot of people appear to be put off by the "kiddy" look of the game, it seems like. Also the fact that instead of working, you can just pay money for better gear. It's no replacement for skill, of course, but it still gives off a "pay to win" vibe to many potential players.

Blazzberry, are you aware that the actual text is "I have no mouth, and I must scream"?

m....

well done Frandons, i have been waiting for someone to say this for 3 years...

game is awsome, lad said it right and i still fail to see why do people dont play it as much. im here for 3 years so far and im still not boared of the game. sure there will alweys be whiny 10 year olds wherever you go.. but tell me is it problem that you need to work for your items in the game? just coz game dosnt give you op shiz of awsome that you can laugh on others for not haveing is something that makes you boared of it? i am proud free to play..

game is chelenging not cheep, its skill to win not pay to win, its action its my perfect game. it even runs on java. JAVA PEOPLE. its good for laptops and other things.

im sad to see that most of comunity acts bit toxic and dont appritiate/understand work of 3 rings. ofcorse every company needs to earn money to make game but nobody looks at good parts of it and those people that do ignore it and only whine about what they want.
example - OH OH RADIANTS.. MOOOOOM!

what did you get for losing radiants?... (i dont know.. no mist, no elevator cost, sparks of life, chanse to get item from forge boxes thats valued 200k crowns etc...)

i consider this game to be a hidden gem. its far more unique then other generic RPGs or things... and OOO you got my deapest love for still being awsome even after what people have done. you guys are amaizing
(sorry for my bad spelling)

No game is perfect

Blazzberry:
No game is perfect, and Three Rings is still updating the game even though your point of view is mostly true. My point was it's still better than most of other free to play games.

Lonely-Tear:
Someone that understands me! And by the way I think paying CE will only make the game boring making it too quick to complete.

Ultimaximus:
True the 'kiddy look' scares some people off, but every gamer has a 'kiddy mind' inside them that will might never go away. This might sound like a thing your grandfather would say but it's kind of true.

[scrap] YEAH

well said frandons, best example - League of Legends
people where LAUGHING so hard at the game when it came out. and what is the game today? one of most played games in the world? did the graphicks change? hell no....

you see many people see the problem but they FAIL to understand, makeing a good game and keeping it alive for long time and adding new content is impossible job there is NO perfect game, or we would all be playing it right now.

Nick and his team made something marevouls over the years.. i belive he left SK in good hands...

(also, bombers are prob the most useful class in game, they can be dmg-ing and suportive, problem people underated them is their difficulty, and fact that everyone finds it easyer to just pickup a brandish and burst kill things. they need some will, knowlage and skill to be played, and its a must for any pro party)

Good to see SK growing

I proudly played this game for the last 3 years and I loved the way the game grew beside me even though I didn't even reach five stars equipment. I still remember when we had to pay 10 CE or normal energy to play a level... :')

Its also really small and repetitive with few actual content updates to add anything new. Plus most of the concepts are entirely cliche, like spikes, etc. Why play this when you can just go pick up Legend of Zelda?

I play SK because I like repetitive things, never played Zelda and think the game looks cute.

my 2 cents

League of Legends
Team Fortress 2
Loadout
The mighty quest for epic loot
Path of Exile
Warframe
War Thunder
Gunz 2
Planetside 2
Neverwinter
Marvel Heroes
Hearthstone (yes it's free!)
Ghost Recon online

Do you know how bad the F2P model of SK is compared to some of these games? And how slow OOO put update vs most of these titles? SK has great potential, if they had a team that knew how to manage games

@ Hellscreams-forum

I don't play DotA2 and I rarely play LoL, not even lvl 30 yet after a year or two playing it...

And SK is easier to make than you would think. A lot of people can be taught how to use spiral spy by simply watching Youtube videos... Yes they worked hard and spent a lot of time on it.

So can you...

People have a misconception about video gaming and that it's "hard" to make a video game, have you checked indie game lately? It's quite easy to make a solid indie game, look at Castle Crasher... Perfect exemple of little awesome games that only a few people pulled off. And that is still making money cause it was just ported to PC...

I know too many games and know too many people making games to give OOO credit for anything. All OOO is doing should've been done about half a year ago...

Making a java game out of Spiral Spy is hard? Go say that to Notch

You know, complaints about the optimal gear and stuff are issues endgame players have to deal with. Newbies don't really care about that lol.

When I was new, my friends and I thought the clockworks were pretty much unlimited- like every time we played it, it was a new experience. We needed to get into T2 together, then T3 - and then we wanted to get to the core. We didn't really get the "meh, same old thing" feeling until we actually played most of the content.

Now, new players have this mission system to greet them as soon as they enter the game, and they see a set story with a list of missions to accomplish and assume there's an end. The randomization isn't the big thing anymore, but more as a way to create some variety in the pieces leading into the pre-defined levels. If a recent thread is to be believed, it seems most new players don't even really know much about the whole Arcade thing. The randomized gates with 'unlimited content' isn't a big thing to them.

Does it seem like a limited game from the onset now?
---

Me and another one of my friends tried to get someone else into the game, but timing was bad (around the time Diablo3 came out), so he joked around about how much of a kiddy game it was and how D3 was so much better. Well, he's already stopped playing D3, did Torchstone 2 for a bit and idk what he plays now.

Meanwhile, I'm still playing SK and my friend stopped playing 2 weeks after the sprite patch cause she got too busy and felt like there was only grinding left for her.

@Shamanalah:
Gunz2!? Wow I thought that was in development hell :O

@Hellscream:
lol. don't worry about it, he's a bit of a conspiracy theorist. Just nod it off.

Just chiming back in to say I never disagreed with the op about what they said. I'd be a liar as I've almost hit 100 days worth of playing sk.

@ultimaxus I'm well aware of what it is, I just put my own spin on it. Knyack knyack knyack.
I'm actually happy someone caught on.

Anyhoo, the "kiddy" look excuse is horse droppings. Look at pokemon games. Outside of the game you'd assume its for 10 year olds. But surprisingly, its targeted for all ages(For those that bothered actually playing the game and didn't sit on the ignorance sidelines.)It has that kiddy look on the outside but a serious competitve side that's peeking it's head out as games go on. Heck, some of the pokemon actually kill humans and the last game had a guy who wanted to cause mass genocide on a huge part of the human race he thought was trash.

My point is, the game has an adorable look just like sk and still sells like hotcakes. Only difference is more people are behind pokemon. We kinda need more behind sk .-.

Arguably, each pokemon game

Arguably, each pokemon game is meant to be able to bring in a whole new wave of '10 year olds'. Heck, the cartoon's still going and Ash is still 10 years old, isn't he?

The quality of the game/universe are what keep the kids coming back as teens and adults lol. You can also tell that they've also made efforts to throw a bone to the older players (various references to the older series, bringing back old pokemon in newer regions), as both a treat and reason to come back (at least, in the case of HG/SS).

But idk, you might be harder pressed to find adults who'd want to start getting into it.
___

Anyway, looks are just a way to draw people into the game. After that, 'caring' about the game has more to do with how engaged you get once you're in it.
Heck, I put Minecraft down after I first played it (the textures hurt my eyes XD), and only really got into it after being convinced to play the non-free version with a friend for a bit.
With SK, I had a really charismatic friend who would post on FB and try to organize it so his friends (myself included) would play SK at the same time, back when Mist Energy was a thing. They got into it enough for me to start looking into the game more, and setting up the goal of making the Gran Faust and becoming a cursed-sword-wielding hero (lol, Valkyrie set) and setting many more goals after that.

As I said

As I said, no game is perfect but SK is a really good one compared to most free to plays. If you think I'm saying this just because I don't play any other free to plays, you're wrong. I'm addicted to almost every good free to play including League of Legends. I'm not saying SK should have a huge player base like other games but something relatively fair compared to other free to plays.

I love this game, but it has its flaws

Spiral Knights has a great free to play model in my opinion. You can get all gear, experience all levels, and make hundreds of dollars of in game currency without paying a single cent. The flaws dig into the fun factor, and we've seen Three Rings' attempt to appeal to end-game players with difficult challenges and pretty rewards, but the players just starting out feel left out. Danger missions, black kats, Tortodrones, grinchlin assault... These are for vanguards at heart, but cannot be played on demand.

The game becomes less magical the more you play, but that doesn't mean it can't still be fun and a great game.
Criticisms are good for a game when they are constructive. Instead of trying to defend your favorite game against criticisms, consider what they are saying. The game will only grow with change, and sometimes those changes were in a wrong direction. Criticisms catch them and even if it takes six months, changes the game into what both the developers and the players love.

Well, it should merit that

Well, it should merit that care, methinks.

I stopped playing because it got kinda boring. What am I gonna do today in SK?

Same exact thing I was doing the past week in SK.

When some game manages to become a job, rather than a game, then that's where lines have to be drawn.

I'll see if anything interesting comes out of that gunner update thought. Wasn't that supposed to be a thing in January?

I love League of Legends and Call of Duty: Black Ops II Multiplayer (I said BO2 because I hate Ghosts (no offense)) and I find them repetitive (no offense again) and I still play them all DAILY.

That's your own opinion.

I just like the game because I can game a few hours when i'm bored. Some people would probably even say some indie games don't need awesome over the top graphics to be good. If other aspects of the title suit them, there fine with playing it.

The game would be better if

The game would be better if it wasn't such a repetitive grindfest and OOO updated it more frequently with actual content (i can understand they're a small team, but still...). It has really nice and cute aesthetics though, I'll give them that, but that's not enough to make it GOTYAY.

Also I wish it could be less casual and handholding - they've nerfed a lot of enemies since I've started playing, HoH killed recipe selling, arsenal stations killed the need to be prepared for all levels in a stratum and the new revival system favors solo runs over full party ones, both the latter severally gimped the very important aspect of teamwork.

(Please forgive me I'm bad with words)

Well, IMO this game is very nice. I like it and have over 300 hours on steam. I'm semi-F2P, I only ever bought about two of the $2 CE packs and the starter pack. I don't really see the problem(s) this game has, probably cause I'm not endgame yet as I'm not too terribly into gaming (I'm pretty bad at games actually, I've only ever rebirthed once on mabinogi ever since 3 years I think) anyways I'm going off subject. I think the storyline is nice, although I thought the skylark crashed instead of blew up. I don't know what to say is all I can say (?!) for now, if you read the title of this post. Other than that, I guess I'll have to get further into the game than just sit at my first 2 5* weapons and rant about what I think about stuff I never even experienced.

No dice.

The game has its perks but ultimately it devolves into the typical grind-heavy and repetitive nonsense one sees in most F2P titles. Endgame is effectively little more than "FSC: The Grind" and substantial content updates (ie, new permanent boss strata) are remarkably rare, which leads to a very stagnant and redundant experience.

Recently, I introduced my little brother to the game, thinking maybe he'd enjoy it and we could have some good times together (I live overseas so staying in touch can be hard), but even he quickly realized just how grind-heavy the game really is and ultimately ended up putting it down. Honestly, I don't blame him. Games are meant to be enjoyable - but when a game offers little beyond a recycled uphill slog, there's not much point in sticking around.

It's hard to continue caring

It's hard to continue caring about a game when you get (perms at first, then lowered to temp after) banned 24 hours after spending money on it, due to veepocalypse (I bought over 150k vees, didn't sell any, thought it'd be an automatic rollback because it's a game and it's all virtual). Not to mention the guy (who I won't name here as per the forums rules) who mailed me a f your mom message in October because I didnt give him free money did not get banned, and the guild he's in promoted him to officer of a rather large guild. Or that time I had a supposed friend who was in the same guild as me decide to raid veteran storage and play hostage games with what he stole, and admit fully he manipulated for the measly amount actually in veteran, which was "measly" due to a previous raid a few months prior forcing a max of 5 per item limit. Or that 9 out of 10 loans turn up to people running away with the money, no matter how small the loan. Spend a bunch of ce bought irl on a guild and on gifts for friends? Doesn't matter, veepocalypse happened.

It's cases like these that make me regret funding this MMO any further. If a GM doesn't believe me they can check my energy history (hint: I last bought on an alt, but they keep records of mailings of ce). I'll be skipping out on buying the current promo and the next few at minimum because for now I'm jaded. This is not an attack on the GMs, it was bad timing with veepocalypse happening when I bought ce, but some players and a poor turn of events are just making me lose faith and right now I'm just too jaded. I promised myself I wouldn't spend more after last december (due to bad stuff in December), and all I feel now is regret.

It's hard to continue caring about a game when you get (perms at first, then lowered to temp after) banned 24 hours after spending money on it,

I know a friend who recently got banned probly forever cause it was a ban evasion ban... He wants to play the game but OOO don't want to even though it's his 3rd time getting to 5* and even dropping $$ in, so obviously he left and will never come back.

It's my 3rd friend in less than 8 months being banned away due to old mistakes. They want to amend but have no clue what they did cause they don't have access to their old account and cannot appeal a ban evasion.

Another guy that I know had to traceIP cause OOO had blocked his IP for no reason, sure enough he did all the work and OOO just unblocked his IP (which probly got locked by accident, seeing the human mistake OOO can pull off, you have no idea how hard I am laughing at the prismatic bolted vee mistake, it's 2 textbox!!)

The customer service is really lacking and after 2 years and a half, OOO has lost a lot of my respect. If not all of it...

Blazzberry, pretty much

Blazzberry, pretty much summed it up, compared to other f2p mmo's of its caliber SK has very little vareity and content, and what new content arrives it usually reskins and cosmetics, there is little on going endgame so veterans are left with 2 options after collecting the "optimal" gear, grind to collect other gear or find a new game. LD goes a long way to keeping the game alive for some players but its vast difference in gameplay compared to the pve part of the game puts some players off.

though many do come back for an update because the gamplay itself is quite enjoyable and unique for an mmo. f2p or otherwise. though it is far less than when i started playing (way back when it was first released) they are currently revamping the arcade to make it a option for players again, but OOO's development times are notoriously long, so who knows.
