Client freezing

I don't know about you guys, but both me and a few guildmates/friends noticed that the client freezes a lot while playing (might be related to the mission Shroud of the Apocrea).

Anyone else has these issues?

Game is unplayable, freezes every 2-3 seconds. Never had a problem before today.

Yes, the freezing issue appeared in the Apocrea mission for me too, today, about three levels in. Had to quit and restart the client before the issue went away.

The large maps may be the problem...

I realized that the RAM usage was abnormally high, so I checked the Windows Task Manager.

And I come to find that Spiral Knights, which is normally about 500-700 MBs of RAM, has jumped to about 1.2-1.3 GBs of RAM.

I'm guessing that the large maps of the Grasping Plateau are the main reason. Can anyone confirm? Or noticed their RAM being abnormally high?

Actually.

It's a memory leak.

SK has had this issue for a long time.

yesh ., freeze freez!

OMG., im experiencing same thing :'( i dont know what to do., lol

my game always freezes in the Plateau :'(

Yes this also happens to me.

Yes this also happens to me. It's weird though because some plateaus I'm perfectly fine and others I cant function. Mostly happens in plateaus, but I just got a lot of lag in an arena too. Worst part is we had just finished the 3rd arena at depth 28 and it kicked me out of the game before I got the boxes :( Not even a dc just straight up kicked me out of the game. I've been booted from the game a few times like this today but that was the first time outside of a plateau. Almost never had lag before today so must have something to do with the update (which they said was going to improve performance) or Apocrea, but I don't remember lag like this from the last event.

Same here, worked fine for

Same here, worked fine for about 2-3 dives then totally spiraled into oblivion and it barely lets me move before choking up again.

(I was left on the elevator so that when everyone died they could go on)

The Apocrean Harvesters new ability is to induce freezing and lag on all who enter their cursed domain

I have also been experiencing mixed issues. One run I was perfectly fine, one run my game would freeze every four seconds, I REALLY hope OOO fixes this. :-/

This is insane. WTF is wrong with you, OOO? FIX IT! I have minimum settings AND 4 bars connection and it's still completely unplayable. It wasn't doing this two days ago!

I start freezing intermittently a few minutes after I reach the plateau. After a while, I'm freezing up all the time. And it's terrible. I can hardly move properly, much less free trapped souls or run away from the Harvester.
Even worse, when I return to Haven, the freezing persists in the same horrible way it did before, which leads me to conclude (as some already have) that it is in fact a memory leak.
Please fix this, OOO.

Not sure if this matters, but

Not sure if this matters, but i found that it doesnt happen if i solo the mission.

When i did a party tho.....freezing every 3 secs. Restarted comp and it was seemingly fixed, but it is prbly the level. I did roarmy and no hiccups worth noting.

I've had the problem too, but..

Just try to make sure all the Scarabs are dead (and that your party members are killing ALL of them as well..)

It seems to help.

Yeah like I'm going to solo the one mission where loot is not affected and you're basically REQUIRED to split up to cover ground...

Actually, it may just be a coincidence, but there seems to be an extra puzzle (those things that give x18 Sigils) per person.

More people = more puzzles = more Sigils.

i heard from somewhere that

i heard from somewhere that lag is affected by the scarabs we release, due to the sheer mass of them accumulating and people not finishing them off; letting them roam and fly right into my hp juicy face ...-.-....but take what i said with a grain of salt.

oh, and KILL THE SCARABS FOR THE LOVE OF PANCAKES!

Normally, this doesnt happen to me since I use RGBooster.

However. during Apocrea or other levels, the game keeps freezing.
Is this a bug or something?

Holy memory Leak D:

Yeah..I just had almost all 6 of my gigs of memory being used by SK...my game froze 2-3 times a second, and when i tried to get to the next level, took about 5 mins to try and load and them completely crashed >.<

From what it looks like, I'd probably have to run my SK client for two days straight to start seeing this. I think I now know why I'm not getting this: high amounts of RAM.
I still am affected by the memory leak, things like hovering over items in the inventory starting to freeze the game for multiple seconds, but don't get this screen freezing in Apocrea.

You can counter this latest OOO Tree Ring blatant cash grab by copying the following code:

-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
-XX:+CMSIncrementalMode
-XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing
-XX:+ExplicitGCInvokesConcurrent

Paste that into notepad and save it as extra.txt in your Spiral Knights folder.

More info about extra.txt here.

Maybe someone with more than 5 years experience programming Java can explain why this works and provide better optimization settings. I'm lazy so the rest of you will have to accept anecdotal evidence that I've run the full Apocrea mission three times (7 Grasping Plateaus total) while using these settings without restarting my client and have not experienced the kind of lag that is being discussed in this thread.

ALSO: Everyone should kill all scarabs anyway whether it improves memory management or not, thx.

Edit: corrected numbers to reflect another successful run.

Thanks for this contribution Corsa, but does this work also in other places? For example the day that OOO says that they "Removed" The Freezes when an enemie spawn, i got now a HUGE FREEZE that last like 30 segs when roarmulus finally awakens and make the creen flash in light, does this will reduce the freeze in that part of roarmulus?. Thanks for your answer

What about graphical glitches followed by crashing to the desktop with no error message? That happened to me during the last time this event was available, and it happened again. Last time, I powered my way through with all my Sparks just to get the sword and gun, but I'm NOT putting myself through this again for the bomb.

I could have mentioned that

I could have mentioned that overriding the default garbage collection behavior (at least with the settings I demonstrated) can affect loading times negatively. For example, the time required to load any level is increased and, at least on windows, spiral knights and/or java may seem to stop responding. Personally this compounded an issue I was experiencing with loading the Grasping Plateau levels where the client would stop responding when reaching about 90%. For this and other rare negative behaviors I recommend deleting or reverting extra.txt when the Apocrea event ends.
