"It was stated, yes. But it was stated a good year later after I asked them during one of the interview posts, because I was legitimately confused what was up with the gun. Those interviews were really nice things, too. I definitely appreciated them doing that quite a bit." -Fehzor

OH, that was your question? Now that is both hilarious and embarrassing. Haha.

I guess giving that info out after all that time in such a fashion is sort of dumb, yes. I don't even know if I would call it "giving out info" seeing as you had to ask the developer directly. But the information was most definitely helpful, even if it maybe was slightly on the "technical" side that you mentioned earlier, it did serve well and I'd definitely be more than content with informational bits like this about why something didn't work out.
And yes, I completely agree with you, the employee interviews were definitely worth reading and were a fun addition to the forum threads - And I suppose they don't have an infinite stack employees hidden in some closet to interview, so they might have to get slightly creative on that if they were to keep on doing it. I did feel it sort of was connection on a different level.

"I sense some hostility. You seem to be threatening that the game will die if they don't do what you tell them to do. Why are you threatening OOO? [Rhetorical question.] You are unhappy. I get it. They get it. Most forumers/players get it. I'm not saying it's wrong to have that viewpoint. I'm saying it is wrong to be hostile with that viewpoint."

How was I being hostile? I simply implied that they have to changed their strategy since I believe their current strategy isn't working.

Three days in and we're still controversial!

I find it funny how whenever Three Rings communicates with us we make a big hissy fit, and when Three Rings doesn't communicate with us we make a big hissy fit.

Here's to a second page. Cheers.

Still more biting, scratching and hair pulling. Comparing any group of player's comments to flatulence serves no purpose but to deliberately hurt others.

@Glitter

Yep lol. That was actually why I chose to use that as my point, because it was a perfect response that they had already given. They didn't overwhelm with information that gave away the fundamentals of how the game worked, but they gave a response that was still sincere and actually answered the question. The only thing that was up with it was that there were a lot of people wondering about it, and that the GMs and devs should have had some idea that it was a thing that could have used explaining ahead of time. It also goes to illustrate why some information is 100% fine to give out.

@Hollafamer

Mostly on your first post. I think you have some very good points, but also some misguided ones.

You think players are raging because they hate this game? No its because they love this game so much and only want to see it thrive not fall apart. I just don't get their philosophy what so ever.

This sits well with me. Aphrodite reported that their sharing information was only ever a bad thing, and made it out as though they were scared to do so. Skepticraven brings up that they don't want to feed the trolls, but I don't think the trolls are really even a thing. The so called trolls often post things for a reason, to bring up a serious point that they have. Sure their points and critique may be without basis often, but that kind of thing is unavoidable, and Three Rings shouldn't go hide in the corner and cry about it.

majority of the forum community

A surprising number of people on the forums actually seem to support being kept in the dark and spoon fed promotions. I don't claim to understand these desires, but they're all over this thread. But even if they did all agree with you, I'm not sure what that would prove. The decision to share information shouldn't be a majority vote, because that would be terrible-- rather, it should be based on what sort of vibe sharing information with the players would give about Three Rings. In the end, they are the ones to be judged, not "the trolls".

>We can't go into the details

>We can't go into the details of why things are delayed, and that also makes the community angry.
No surprise, when something bad happens people want to know why, and "We can't tell you" is not an answer! While I'm not entirely sure it has to do with the devs' superiors (which probably has), I'm much more sure that they could have got the update ready sooner if they didn't focus so much on promos.

@Portrayt
You should have asked about the radiant drought too, since it's a serious issue that has been around almost since last year and it's also something that the devs didn't explain well yet (although we can be sure why they did it). I wouldn't be surprised if he just told you "we can't tell you lol" or even completely dodge the queston.

lol, still had this tab open, might as well.

You should have asked about the radiant drought too, since it's a serious issue that has been around almost since last year and it's also something that the devs didn't explain well yet (although we can be sure why they did it).

Radiant 'drought' was part of the rebalance to F2P-ize the game. In the past, with an energy-to-play-based system, the game wasn't truly F2P in the sense that you could get to the end without SOMEONE buying energy (though, of course, people like myself have gotten to where we are now without spending any real money - with time). But the tradeoff was that if you DID pay (or have other means to get CE), you could progress extremely quickly. In fact, it was to the point that the game was advertised to have no grinding. And at the point that the video was made, it was true - all you needed was the gear (well, enough gear) and you had access to the entire game.

We're spoiled by that.

Heck, as a starting knight, the first thing I did was focus all my resources to crafting the strongest sword I knew about - the Khorovod, so I was 2* armor with my friends fighting the Royal Jelly with a 4* weapon.

When they switched to the F2P system (alchemy orbs that DROP [f2p..!], fire crystals), they initially had it set so high that there was nothing to offset the now-non-required energy purchases. Then they set them really low, possibly in a move to encourage sales of crystals (ex: buy it with energy). Unfortunately, it does kind of mean that there -is- "grinding" in the game, but instead of EXP, it's by nature of item hunting, further pushed by how alchemy ingredients only come from certain strata now.

Thankfully, they increased the rates so that we could find radiants from d25(rarely)-d28 (to the point that I get 12-21[or more] radiants in an FSC run when I used to get 3-12). I'm fairly sure that's as far as we'll get for the radiant balance for a long time.

-----------------

We have new content in
development that I know the players are going to love. It is difficult to see
people claiming that we don't care and we're just in it for the profit. I love
playing Spiral Knights, and it's something that I do with my family. I don't
get to play a lot, but the times I do dust off my civilian knight, I truly
enjoy the game.

This is actually really nice to read, and at least means something to me about the environment and passion there. :3

While Aph is part of the CM team, it's still nice to see that you guys enjoy the game you're involved with.

At the company I worked at, most of us wouldn't touch our games in our free time with a pole, well, because our games were (mostly at the request of clients) in it for the profit... XD

Ooh right, I nearly forgot.

It's still lame for the part of OOO to replace a rubbish system with another, "slightly less" rubbish one. At least they could just let us level up stuff with any kind of crystal. That way, we could do some progress anywhere rather than just being forced to get near the core everytime we want to have a glance at the radiants. Then again, they would just make dim crystals drop everywhere to "balance" it out...

Would have been nice

Yeah, like if crystals had "value" that "added up" (arbitrary example: 18 shinings = 1 radiant worth of 'heat value' to level, and it all just adds up at the end, so you could combine like, 36 shinings and 1 radiant for a total of 3 radiants' values), it would make things a whole lot easier to level. At least you get "some" progress even if it's not the best progress.

I mean, pets work that way, sort of. You can get their heat by playing or feeding non-'best' items.
Sure it requires the 'best' item in order to level up, but there, you only need one.

but I digress, that's one for the suggestions lol.

On-topic:

...oh and the worst part (from my POV) is really that it's been so splintered:
- HUGE move towards F2P gameplay, unfinished
- Multiple moves towards making the game more interesting for newer players (early-game mission tweaks)
- Multiple events
- ...Items/mechanics changes? (gunner update)

So...
- The (...former..?) core game (arcade) has been neglected by both sides to the point that we have two unused crystal types in the game and players mostly only play missions, out of convenience and speed.
- We have one item with traits of the gunner update (tortofist) without the rest of the guns.
- We get cool events... limited time events, but haven't gotten new permanent content for a while. It was exciting when a new area was announced (due to randomization), but now new areas have to somehow be tied to missions.
- For some reason, people care more about the items that they probably won't even use (gunner update) instead of the fact that the whole core thing is falling out of relevance.

I mean, promos aside (because as I see it, they're scheduled way ahead of time and will happen regardless), the content/feature focus has kinda been all over, leaving things feeling 'bad' while they're in transition. I don't think the systems they're being replaced with are inherently bad, it's just that it feels weird as long as they're not all there in entirety.

So, in short, if devs say nothing = everyone gets mad, but if devs say something = everyone still gets mad and usually drives the devs from the forums.

This thread was promising but the complainers ruined it.

@Seiran (Post 59)

...Seerusly? You're complaining about Spiral Knights having elements of a Free to Play? Well guess what? Spiral Knights was, and is, Free to Play game. And if you're complaining about grinding (I said if, because I'm an idiot and I'm not sure if you were actually complaining), well there was grinding before mist energy was removed, and orbs and fire crystals were added. It was easy enough to make 2* equipment, but then when you needed to make 3*, 4* and 5* stuff, that's when the grinding started. If you weren't good at RJP or FSC, then you'd have to grind regular missions or Snarby. It would have taken a while to get decent equipment without real money, but it was possible.

(This part is towards everyone) Please be patient for the Gunner Update. The Developers are trying their hardest to get the update finished, so the least you could do is stop raging at the them and do something to keep yourself entertained. The OOO developer team isn't the largest in the world, you know. ;3

algorithms are the solutions to any problem.

welcome to the forums, lady and kid. do some research in the first 5-6 pages of the forum and you'll see that there are some like you that try to calm down the flood of ragers and fail.
it might be the forum having less active people in it, but it seems we are getting more of everything these days. war rages across the forums, with threads on both sides (although as always there are more raging threads).

From what I've read...

I don't know how many people are complaining and how many are praising. I kinda lost track after a couple of posts (Too much text to read). But lets all just be glad that at least SOMEONE replied. Lots of people are complaining that nobody ever listens to the community. Well guess what? Someone listened and sent a reply. Either way, I still believe that the main reason for delay is the Arcade Redux. I mean, the Redux is pretty much changing SK rather dramatically. Kinda like when Mist Energy was removed. So I think the Devs deserve a little patience from us. (Although, releasing the Gunner Update separately from the Arcade Redux would've been nice. That is if the two are actually paired.)

What we can conclude

If everything Aphrodite said is true (what we can suppose):

-Because of bad reactions in the past, OOO has decided to change the way they communicate with players. Only posts when something is actually released, no development posts anymore to make sure people don't start complaining everything takes too long, what puts even more pressure on the team

-The main reason that things take long is the lack of programmers. They want to expand their team, but until that moment things won't go such as fast.

-Unlike what most people say, OOO does react to what the players want. In fact they even do so too much: instead of doing their original plan, they put it aside again and again to work on things the community wants.

-Instead of adding something small every week, OOO does a lot fewer but bigger updates to make sure they can choose what they do and when they release it, so there isn't too much pressure at the team. That doesn't mean content is being added more slowly: developing still goes as fast as it would when they released stuff every week.

Since new content hasn't been released for a year, it is very likely that there are a lot of almost finished things which will be released the next few months. Just be a little patient...:)

EDIT: This thread ironically confirms the point Aphrodite wants to make. Some kind of info is released, and the first thing players do is becoming angry and complaining about what OOO is doing. This is exactly why they don't want to tell us anything!

Please ignore this thread. I know when the gunner update will release. When? Derogatory. Answer: after we wait. The simple solution to the update is to sit back and relax. Lay back, and cool off. When the update arrives, you'll regret it.

Idk about you, but I won't regret anything, that's how I feel about most things I do, be them right or wrong, regrets are for losers, I came to this world to be myself and the things I do are just a product of that, this thought helped me not to mortify myself about the past and becoming the magnificent being I am now, cool huh?

Aviri: Look at the Sprite Update. Squeeks and squeals in every corner and alley, ghetto or not. All we were over were the Sprites. We were so hyped. Now look at our state! Sprites are hardly lived up to anymore before they were released. As with the new Gunner Update, do you really think these new guns will live up to their hype? Of course not. That's why my opinion before makes sense - OOO is surely developing a new extension for us, like the Arcade Redux per se could use some of our fantastic suggestions we've seen here on the forums. New T3 boss? Or so they say...

Sprites are awesome! I use my little Drakon as much as I use my DVS! (Which is saying a lot.) The crowd control on the exploding Firebolt is nuts, and the Barrier's damage is nuts. The Firestorm's Attack Damage increase is also nice to have.

Maybe it didn't live up to some people's expectations, but I know I can't be the only one who is really happy to have them in the game.

Right there with you, Auto (Shadows don't cast light, do they?)

Interestingly enough, most people were all over the Drakon at launch of the sprites. I know that I thought about it when they were announced, but I ultimately went Maskeraith. Now I'm one of those F2Players that can't afford or is to lazy to obtain any of the other sprites, so I've learned how to use him pretty well. And funnily enough, I use his invisibility more than anything. Haze? Too much chance. Quills? Unless it's a boss, enemies I fight tend to get out of the way too fast. Invisibility? YOU MEAN I CAN WALK BEHIND THEM AND BECAUSE OF MY ULTIMATE I DO MORE DAMAGE FASTER AS SOON AS I BREAK OUT ASJKOEWGJEIFOJ EWF *cough* Apologies for the caps.

Onto the original topic of this thread, I appreciate and can understand the response given by Aphrodite. And similar to others, I sincerely am grateful for the initiative and level-headedness shown by ... oh no. Apologies, I forgot your name, OP, and it's too late at night for me to get up the will to go back a page where you've posted and find it. Sorry bout that. But yes, thank you.

As much as I'm not a fan of the "barrage of prize boxes" or costume boxes, what have you, I'm not entirely against them. In this modern day, you'd be hardpressed to find a game loved by many that is completely and utterly free for everything in every aspect. LEGITIMATELY find, mind you. None of that pirating stuff or whatnot. The gaming industry survives off DLC and prices for games, F2P games aren't a big money pull and people need to eat.

At the risk of being misquoted or shot down by any of the lovely forum-goers that have posted before me, I will say this. Imagine that you are a scientist. Now, as a scientist, you have been given the single task of researching and trying to create a metaphorical cure for cancer by the firm you work for (maybe firm isn't the right term to use here, I don't know I'm not a scientist). Once you have a prototype out, you release for testing or whatnot. If found successful, you would want to have people pay for it, as this is now your life's work and you have absolutely no other way to make cash in a very money/wealth-oriented society. But the people cry "OUTRAGE" and wish for this miracle to be distributed for free. They say that you are killing people by withholding this cure from them, and that you are only in it for the money. You sit back and ask yourself what you did to offend these people in such a way and how they can forget that in any way, shape, or form, they do the same thing. You work. You create. You invent. You cook. You commentate. You play sports. It doesn't matter how, you are putting in work that others are paying you to do. And yet here is this life-giving thing that they refuse to compensate you for.

Hm. Doesn't feel quite right now, does it? I'm not saying that SK is the cure for cancer, and I haven't been particularly active in it lately either. This isn't due to me hating the game or the development team, because I have the utmost respect for both. I simply have personal issues with playing one game obsessively for too long at a time. That, and work/school/social life/etc tends to get in my way. I still find time to log in now and again to chat with my old friends in Owsla, and maybe go on a holiday event run or two, but I find it a bit ridiculous when people that find enjoyment in playing this game day in and day out like I assume you forumers do (why else you be posting, just a question) get mad when it isn't being changed. Don't you enjoy it how it is? Can't you have just as much fun with the mechanics you have now as you will a year after new mechanics are released? As mentioned before: Sprites were hype. Overly hype, some might say now. And they are almost forgotten entirely by most players on a daily basis unless they accidentally use a sprite skill. It doesn't mean you have lost the enjoyment of using them, you simply can't remember it because you used it all up.

tl;dr: I rant a lot. Nothing really relevant in this text-wall. GOOD JOB OP :D
