and I can honestly still say that Spiral Knights is consistently one of my favorite games, and has been this whole time. I started the first official day of launch and despite a lot of real life getting in the way, I keep coming back, and hope to for quite some time to come. Lots of laughs and good memories with friends, hard-earned victories before learning the ins and outs of the Jelly King and later Vanaduke.. so many good memories. :D

And the cutest art style I have ever seen in a game like this. I really wish more games looked so visually appealing. It's also been incredibly inspiring to me as an artist and aspiring "game dev" (I use the term lightly as my grasp on coding is tenuous, but I have plans on creating a few basic games in the coming months so here's hoping), seeing this game develop and unfold while still staying largely consistent visually. Team Fortress 2 doesn't even have that honor as the silhouettes and color design get thrown more and more out the window as they add more and more cosmetics.

SK isn't perfect, but I honestly can't think of a single game that IS, not even Phantasy Star Online. ;)

Anywho. Some positivity to thwart all them negative vibes we have going on. This year's Dark Harvest is looking to be pretty awesome! Not an intense grindfest (like we asked), a dash of new content with the masks and Grim Scarabs, and after a few months of hardly thinking about it, I'm honestly pretty excited about the gunner update again?? Or at least some kind of content update. I feel it in my bones.

ANYWAY, POSITIVITY:
how does SK rank as a favorite of yours?
favorite SK memory?
favorite thing about the game?

etc etc etc.
let's just be happy and enjoy the best holiday of the year. c:

SK is the only game that I couldn't let go of( I played many other F2Ps but got tired of them sooner or later). It's also the reason I decided to start game development.

Maybe we could collaborate, eh?

I've played a ton of other F2Ps in my day, too, starting with but not limited to FlyFF.. and dozens more, haha. And yeah, this is by far the longest I've stuck with F2P or P2P games, I just realized, dang. ;w; ! The only games I've played longer are console games that I've been playing since childhood.

Collaborating could be fun. ;3 I'm kind of a terrible worker sometimes, though; I've been sitting on concepts for literally years in some instances and I wouldn't want to drag a potential teammate down with my lack of motivation. D:

Spiral Knights really sticks out like a sore thumb to me, really, and now before you call me out for being negative Social Justice Warrior style, just let me remind you that how many art works I made for this game. You can check out MidnightDJ-Sk on DA if you are not convinced, spiral knights and its art style aspired me to accelerate the improvement of my drawing skill, truely, without this game, I would still be drawing like this as suppose to this . So thanks to Ian and his foresight, I improved dramatically in two short years, a level of improvement I couldn't make by myself.

Now with the positive stuff out of the way, let's not forget why is this game is a sore thumb to me as well as many people. While other MMO that I played basically reached my expected level of success based on their life cycle, game content and overall ingenuity, Spiral Knights should have had FAR MORE than what was actually achieved, the style, the simple yet hard to truely master game plays and the potential for a rich lores and back ground stories. All of these efforts and potential seemed to be wasted away, whether SK's short coming is due to Nick's fault, SEGA's intervention or simply a paycheck one size too small, we may never know.

I give SK rank No.2 on my MMO list, the first one still has to be Navyfield, as a six year naval veteran (the game is 9 years old), I have seen countless battle on board Aircraft carriers, Battleships, Submarines and numerous other support ships, the game is even more broken than spiral knight nowdays and I often carsh and disconnect from the game, but Navyfield is still my all time favourite MMO. Nothing boils my blood more than sending my divebomber squadron for a bombing sorty against the enemy ships, having an epic gun duel on board my Yamato class battleship or just sneaking around with my Type-IX D2 submarine in hope of ruin someone's day.

Yamato? IX-D2?! Midnight, Y U fight 4 Axis???

Let's just say one of my long time friend gave me his account to play with and he loved Axis stuff, so I just rolled with it... *shrug* ... he never played again but he was impressed with how long I sticked to that game.

Now since there is nothing I need in this SK event, I must return to the highsea, Germany needs me!!!

Has it been that long already? Shoot, it feels like just yesterday when I booted up this silly little game on my crappy little laptop that chugged and struggled to even run Calculator. I've racked up, like, 5,100 hours? Dang.

This game's been a staple of eating up my free time, for better or worse. Both the Zelda Four Swords-like gameplay and the cutesy art style keep me way too emotionally invested in my little dumb knight as I watch them run and hack and slash and pump Iron Slug bullets in everything.

Answer time!

1.) Sk is preeeeeeety far up there for MMO's i've played so far. I like ranged and the occasional in your face combat and the one sk gives feels free <3 I'd have to say it's top 5 on my list.

2.) favorite sk memory would have to be when I unboxed rare things. It's not one moment but rather a lot. Things such as unboxing prismatic glow eyes, giga shades, wolver tails, shadow keys etc.

3.) Favorite thing about the game is lockboxes. I know a lot of people hate them, but I can't help my curiosity to know what's in them. Truth be told, I'm hoarding a lot of these boxes on an alt. help

Come to think of it, I don't even remember when I showed up in this game. It was a winterfest...but the only other thing I remember was everyone had santa hats, and that one mission got abused..

@Dahall - It's definitely underconfidence, haha. ;_; I reinstalled the game maker app on my PC though so it's baby steps in the right direction! (Hilariously my boss knows of these game design dreams of mine too and he actually said "you rack discipline" to me in Facebook chat the other day, IT'S SO TRUE...)

@Whimsy - Dang that's like twice as much as me. ;w; I wish I had more free time to dedicate to this game sometimes!

@Blazzberry - Oh man, yeah, unboxing rare things is quite a rush. I think the best unboxing I ever had was the Bloom Halo, but the Mixmaster was also up there. I haven't done so well in the regular lockboxes, though I've only opened two, haha.

Also it's worth noting that Destiny has eaten up 95% of my free time in these last few weeks but it's just filler, I guess? I don't love Destiny like I love SK. I just currently have more friends on Destiny and it's still shiny and new, so that gets temporary priority. The event coming back is definitely helping me get back into SK, though. :D

Everyone needs cake, its good for the soul

Its strange to see a thread that is actually complimenting SK, but its nice to see.

For some reason when it comes to SK, I can't seem to just walk away from it. I mean I took a year and a half break from the game and then out of nowhere started playing it again. Over 3 years I have watched this game grow into what it is now and I sincerely hope I will be able to continue to play it. Lately its been getting harder and harder to do that, but whenever the Hallow event (probably my favorite event) comes around it just brings back all the good times I had in the past with SK.

All those past memories running Snarby and Jelly King with my first guild, going into FSC for the first time. I miss that kind of fun and excitement from the game. But I still come on to do events, mess around, or just talk with friends. I guess thats why its so hard for me to drop this game, it was one of the first F2P MMOs I decided to play and I don't regret it.

The game holds too many friendships that I've been connected to. Some of those meetings were... rather unexpected, but it's funny to see how far they've developed over time. They've helped me become develop a strong wit, though I constantly deny such madness. They all have a special place in my heart and I honestly don't know who I'd be if I had not befriended them. Generally speaking, the closer friends don't play as much as we used to, but we all know how it is (as Jabzzers mentioned). Though there has been some ridiculous things that's happened, I'm just glad I have the people I have now.

If SK is one of your favorite

If SK is one of your favorite games, then you really need to expand your horizons, especially if you've spent money on this game or extensively used energy such that you're not limited to the F2P market.

On Steam, SK is my top played game, but only because I play the energy market. Aside from SK, I have over 200 paid for games (which cost about $1,000) that have been afforded through SK energy market trading.

I'm sorry, but seriously, making SK one of your favorites is rather lame. At the very best, you should play SK until you've explored everything it has to offer, and then build up your energy reserves to the point that you can regularly invest and trade for other games that occupy your time.

For example, my trading strategy is to maintain a 40,000 energy reserve and invest until I get to 50,000 and then trade 10,000 away for games on Steam. The time it takes for me to have fun playing those games is about the same amount of time it takes me to regenerate my energy reserve from 40k to 50k.

Strike a balance. Don't get lopsided.

my 2 cents

hmmm favorite games of all time, ever played??? wow that's a though one... (and it's a battle of epicness)

#1 Diablo II: LoD

If you know me you know why it's there, if not then it was my only game along SSBM from 12 to 17 years old and played on-off until I turned 21... that was 4 years ago... IDK how many hours I put in D2, it's uncountable... Over 9,000 easily

#2 Super Smash Bros Melee

Refers to #1... both D2 and SSBM hold special place in my heart

#3 Saints Row: The Third

I hate GTA and slow progression. SR3 was just gobsmackingly awesome and I've been following SR since the very begining. Destruction, street ghetto living and easily accessible, wacky weapons? HELL YEAH! I've replayed this game over and over and over even when I was done with the achievements

#4 Meinekraft

Hate it, love it, whatever your opinion is on Minecraft... I host a new server whenever a new updates comes... + FTB... how not to like? Just a ton of stuff to do with your friends. What I like about Minecraft is that your mind is the only limit to whatever you are building... make a friend who never played Minecraft build a house and see what happens vs YOUR house (if you know how to play at least)

#5 Spiral Knights

Yeah... def #5 behind Minecraft.... Minecraft is better in my book but SK is really closed to it... if SK had a bit more balance (let's not go into detail and start a way about it...) then it would def be above Meinekraft

#6 Portal 2

SPPPPPPPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I just love puzzle games, specially one where you can shoot in. Portal and Portal 2 are just too great to skip by, a must on any gamer shelf

#7 Fable

Not the II, not the III... the first one... for it's time the game was just nice. Great ARPG and probably one of the first game that actually had good/bad decisions that REALLY affected the gameplay.

#8 Super Mario World

I have nothing to say other than go PLAY IT IF YOU HAVEN'T.... the best side scroller there is IMO

#9 The Legends of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Arguable #... it is a good game but I don't like replaying it because of how long it is to actually have fun (for me at least, too long cutscene IMO) but def deserves a spot on the #10

#10 Halo 3
Yup... the 3 was just one of the best IMO... if only it had Reach forge and firefight... I would still be playing it today. Halo 2 & 1 can be put there according to your opinion. The first 3 are just masterpieces of story-telling, which I am not fond of... But Halo 1 backpack reload and Halo 2 swordflight makes up for it... plus it's one of the few game that made me dig the story even though I hate story-telling

Runner up

Terraria
Devil May Cry
Mario kart 64
Banjo Kazooie

What's lame is spending real

What's lame is spending real life money on virtual games. If anything, virtual games should be a tool to find people you're compatible with to earn real life money with, not something you spend real life money on.

Those who earn money through games to play more games are doing it right.

"as a free to play game sk really did a good job at game balancing."

I'm sorry, but I really have to ask this. Are you serious?

I mean, really, the fact that so many people use some combination of 5 star Wolver sets, Chaos set and even BKC, both on PvE as well as PvP should be more than enough to prove that the game is not balanced at all. Don't even get me started on weapons.

Anyway, with that out of the way, let me actually get on topic.
I started playing SK 10 days after it came out on Steam, and played it a lot. I don't have 5k+ hours on it like some other people on here but I have over 3k hours on it and I managed to get all the achievements before some of them became impossible to obtain.

Is it one of my favourite games?

Well, no, not really. My favourite games ever are the Pokémon games. I grew up with that shnizz, I just can't get enough of it and never will. <3
After Pokémon comes Kingdom Hearts. KH is by far my second favourite game series and nothing will take its place either. After that comes a bunch of other games that I've played and really enjoyed.

  • The Binding of Isaac
  • Super Meat Boy
  • Fallout 3
  • Portal (Both games)
  • Corpse Party
  • Super Mario World
  • Danganronpa

And, more recently, Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS. I've only played a little bit of the other Smash games but despite really liking them, I had no possibility of buying the consoles they were on. When I learned about SSB4 would have a 3DS version, I was really happy and bought it on release day. I've been having a lot of fun with it, to say the least. :p

So yeah, Spiral Knights might have started a lot higher on my favourite game list but the lack of new content and constant promos and grindfest events are just making me drift away from it. Not even my goal of getting every craftable piece of gear can motivate me much because of the grinding required to get 5 star stuff to level 10. Also, Kat Raiments be crazy to craft, I'm not even going to bother with those at all.

Favourite SK memory

That's easy. The first piece of 5 star gear I got, my Grey Owlite Shield. It was a really happy moment when I finally managed to get the money for the recipe as well as the money and CE needed to craft it :3

Other memorable things were my first successful run of Vanaduke and the first time I managed to solo Vanaduke without getting murdered by him. Unfortunately, FSC is nowhere as fun to run through anymore.

Also, first time arriving at the Sanctuary after my first Rabid Snarbolax run.

Favourite thing about the game

This.

Nolidor, do you realize that

Nolidor, do you realize that I didn't just choose SK as my favorite arbitratily? There's a lot about it that really fits what I love about gaming, and how exactly could this game continue running if people didn't ever spend money on it? What I spend equates to about $15-20 a month which is the average cost of a paid subscription in any other online game. And while I would have the resources to begin trading for other Steam games, not only am I not terribly interested in other Steam games but I find playing the energy market rather boring. D:

plus do you really want MORE competition? ;3

@Dahall - I'm not confident enough in my ability to use game design as a source of income yet so hobby first, income later, if possible.

@Arilys - Oh man, Corpse Party. My best friend was really into that and DR. Thanks for reminding me to check those out!

One fateful evening

Was bored one day and browsed through Steam's Free to Play section and suddenly happened upon an interesting game called Spiral Knights, and my fate was sealed. Downloaded standalone (didn't want to bind to steam) and LOVED it at the very beginning. I will admit that nowadays I've been coming on and off, but I always end up coming back for some time just to get back into it.

Is it one of my favorite games? Heck yeah. Considering that I've put at least 1000+ hours into the game, I think it's up there. Probably the #1 game that I've put the most time into with Minecraft and Terraria into second and third. Is it my favorite game of all time? Maybe not, but I certainly love it.

My favorite memory has GOT to be getting the Snarbolax Cap and Coat. When I first started the game, the very first Vanguard I saw was wearing it and I inspected the person. Looked at that slick wolver armor and said to myself, "I want that. I want that REALLY bad". And that was my first goal of the game. Get to shadow lair and procure myself a set of sweet Snarbolax armor.

My favorite thing about the game is the art. I love the design of the gear and it is the main reason why I come back. Just the feeling of getting everything because it all looks so damn good.

Just gotta appreciate the little things sometimes. And Addy+Dahall if this Game Dev collaboration actually happens, mind if I join in. I'm learning to program and if it turns into Game development, that would be pretty awesome.

Give example:
When mist energy was around it was like yeah thats the end of the work for today.

Even the season
Then there is the community which is great
And everyday is a good day for a costume.
So in the end what I am say is
Spiralknights was like a place where it's another world for me to get away from the world to Cradle

Oh I just love spiral knights

There aren't too many games that I've found that have quite the charm that Spiral Knights does. Usually the games I've seen with a cute art style have no real moments of adrenaline or on-the-fly difficulty. There are quite a few puzzle games that have a cartoonish art style, but of those none of them have a penalty for messing up, other than "try again".

And a quick note to Nolidor, we all have different tastes in games. You may find a game with quick-paced action to be super fun, and I might like the slower hack n' slash gameplay of Spiral Knights. There's no real "correct" favorite game.

Anyways, to the thread, I found Spiral Knights through Steam myself. At the time I was on a Mac, and Steam's Mac client had came out recently, and only so many games were available. I decided to try it out, had fun, took a break, came back later, then got super attached to the game.

Favorite ranking? Oh dear, I'm no good at those. Spiral Knights is in a glob of games I'll talk positively of regardless of what is boiling on in the community. I find the gameplay fun, and it helps me relax.
Second up is a favorite memory. I don't really have one specific one, but seeing those divine valkyrie wings on the supply depot for the first time (right after battle sprites) pretty much made money fly out of my wallet after some excited noises. Another good memory would be running through the firestorm citadel shadow lair with some other knights and one of them not realizing their mic was on, and screamed when a howltzer spawned in the way.

I think I said this before too, but my favorite thing would have to be the art style plus the casual-but-not-if-you-don't-want-it-to-be gameplay. For instance, I can pretty much run through any level in the clockworks without having my full focus be on the game. But when I am focused on the game, boss areas and challenging levels can be thrown against me to their full extent. I also am a sucker for progress in systems, so I like playing the game to heat my weapons.

I think first I have to drew your attention to "as a free to play game" and then" sk really did a good job at game balancing".

Even I am not a big On line games fan, but I have heard a lot stories about how those $ players crush those non$ players in a so called free-to-play-game. But in sk there wont be too much difference between a $ player and non $ player. I know lots of good pvp or pve players who have no triple max uv on the gear, some of them only got some common costume, but they are really skillful players and they win the respect from the others. that is the balancing I am talking about.

Btw I also see tons of players claiming start playing this game since beta but after 3 years still not unlock all the achievements and play like crap.

That's not balance, that's player skill. And even then that's stretching it a bit because a lot of people get screwed by the crazy lag they have to endure because SK's netcode is rubbish.

Yes, there are games that are pretty much Pay to Win because they sell OP stuff that you can't get by playing the game for free but that's a different comparison altogether. In the end of the day SK has tons of different sets available for use but most players just stick with 3 or 4 OP sets. That's not balance.

"Btw I also see tons of players claiming start playing this game since beta but after 3 years still not unlock all the achievements and play like crap."

What does this even have to do with what we were talking about? But again, this is not balance, it's player skill.
